Sony's active shutter glasses now on sale, $150 buys your eyes a third dimension
Sony may have an impressive lineup of 3D HDTVs, but only the LX900 series comes with the requisite glasses for out-of-the-box 3D enjoyment. Thankfully, the company sells active shutter specs separately, and they're now on sale -- you'll find pairs shipping now for $150 a pop at the Sony Store and several small e-tailers via Amazon. Keep in mind you'll still need an IR emitter to sync those shades -- also available, for a $50 extra charge -- and likely a 3D Blu-ray player (or a PlayStation 3) if you want to have anything to watch. Isn't the future grand?

That means I just need a pair of glasses for me, and also my wife and my two kids at $600. Plus a 3D capable TV at $2000, and a 3D BluRay player at $800. $3400 for the visuals, plus around $1600 for an OK surround sound set up. $5000 for all of the 5 decent 3d-enabled BluRay movies currently available. Or I could just spend $60 at the cinema to watch a film with a huge screen and sound with my family.
@John22s
how is $50 reasonable? it's another scam designed to suck the money from our wallets. why didn't they make the tv's to work with the same cheap specs you get at the cinema?
i cannot wait to see these companies fail at this
also what happens when i have more people around the tv than i have glasses? it's just a complete mess and anyone who actually invests in this stuff... well i guess money isn't an issue for them
me, i wouldn't put a penny towards it on principal even if i had the money
"Isn't the future grand?"
No. It appears to be several grand.
Apart from the companies trying to rake in on the fad...
I really cant see why 3d shutter glasses are so expensive. The tech is... well its old. The glasses have a single black channel LCD screen that just flicks at 50/60hz. Using IR to sync to the player.
It really isnt advanced tech by any means. Even the RnD costs wouldnt cover the high cost of the glasses. And as for materials they look to be the cheapest they could find.
I know nothing about 3D technology. I'm into phone tech right now. None of this makes sense to me. 150 + for glasses? I don't understand!
If you don't like Sony's offering, buy something else.
