Chase Mobile iPhone app update: picture your paycheck deposited, and it's there
While JPMorgan Chase & Co. certainly isn't the first bank to do this -- USAA has allowed its members to deposit checks by snapspot for just under a year now -- it's definitely the first major public bank to bring this stuff to the mainstream. A recent update to the Chase Mobile iPhone app enables customers to photograph the front and back of checks made out to them and then have it deposited directly into whatever Chase account (with their name on it, obviously) they choose. Better still, the service is completely free of charge, though it's limited to Apple's platform at the moment. Too bad you can't just cut checks to yourself and live the life those goofy TV ads push so hard, but hey, at least you're one step closer to pretending.

You can only deposit $1,000 a day...so that make a little bit more than the average person and gets paid every other week will not be able to use this to deposit their check.
I'll have to try this on my iPad, oh wait.. Well, at least my iPod touch has a cam.. oh, wait...
@Kanga
im AM kinda sick of hearing about only iphone apps. I mean, the iphone and apps and magical and revolutionary yea yea, bla bla bla... i wana hear about some of the great apps on android too. Not nearly and even spread here on engadget.
Only true if your paychecks are smaller than $1000.
@nipponese
That sucks. USAA Deposit@Mobile lets you deposit up to $10,000 per day.
@Kanga
What's worse? Apple news or you sitting around all day waiting for a Apple post to come up and pasting that message? I hereby commission a new acronym: GAL - otherwise known as Get A Life
So I realize USAA has done this for a while, but the big issue with USAA is that they have to approve you for the Deposit@Home thing. With Chase's iPhone app, anyone that uses the app can do this. USAA inexplicably would not 'approve' me to do the Deposit@Home feature with them, even though I have an account.
@Zorn
Do you have a credit card with USAA? Deposit@Home requires one I believe.
@Zorn are you in the military or do you have a spouse/parent who's served? If not, you can't get Deposit@Home.
@okok only Apple Fanboys bought i
You are crazy. I've been doing this for a long time via the USAA iPhone app and it is ridiculously good. It takes me 30 seconds to deposit a check, and the funds are instantly available.
Once I was done picking up pieces of my brain from the floor after reading this, I updated the app and tried the deposit feature for myself only for it to say QuickDeposit doesn't work for my account. I spoke with a rep and because I was with WaMu before it became Chase, my account can't use this mind-blowingly-awesome feature yet. He said it may work with my account in "a couple months."
If I wanted to give up my WaMu free checking and start having to pay for stupid bullshit like paying for new checks with a full Chase Account, they can do that for me, but I said I'd wait.
So all the physical security measures of checks (watermarks, changing color with friction, etc.) that can't be verified with a photo of the check are rendered useless with this. Should I be worried, or does this mean that they weren't being used much to begin with?
@zangetsu2 Banks don't really care about those features. I have tried printing check on a piece of blank paper, it was accepted.
@yejun You're correct. I've worked at a large bank (top 3) in the check processing / lockbox department - and I can tell you right now we only look for a few things when volume processing checks:
1. Valid MICR line (the numbers at the bottom)
2. Acceptable payee (though there are exceptions to this rule)
3. Legal and courtesy amounts match (written and numeric amount on a check)
4. Check amount is not over a stated amount if two signatures are required (some checks require two signatures over a certain amount, usually $10,000)
5. Void is not written on the check
6. Check is a US or Canadian check
7. Check date is not older than 6 months (though we will process "post dated" checks the day their received)
That's about it folks. The little 'security features' are of little importance in high volume check processing, because honestly they don't do much. The only parts you need to rip off a check are the routing and dda number on the bottom (the MICR line). With the proper font (E13B) you can print up checks on nearly any material and they are legally considered valid.
The main thing (in my opinion) stopping folks from ripping off banks left and right right phony checks is simply that the account is tied to your name - you'll only have one or two chances to deposit a phony check before they catch on and flag your account - and it's highly likely the check won't even clear before this happens.

@centeredtype You're right, there's too many good things in life to go around just pointing out the bad, if everyone would funnel their energy energy into the good and not the bad, the world would be a better place.
Damnit people, it's called a CHEQUE! :P
I wish PNC had this. I also wish these apps would come to the BlackBerry... for such a 'business' phone there sure aren't many great apps for this sort of stuff.
Then again, I guess a true businessman would use direct deposit.
all your paycheck are belong to Jobs
I am a former WAMU customer who was transitioned to Chase. I was ambivalent about Chase until I tried the app out today and it worked flawlessly. I did it in my car on a notebook for a backdrop. It works just like red laser, it has some crop bars you put the check between and snap the pic.
No more ATM, no more lines, no more driving to the bank for a stupid deposit.
This just made Chase go up a few notches on my list! Those who tout USAA have never been raped by their credit card fees. I'd sooner switch my iPhone for a Razor before I would give my business to USAA
@JF7FSU
Credit card fees? I have a USAA platinum card at 4.25 percent, no fees. Never had a fee before. Best bank around. Call them again, maybe it has changed for you.
People still get paper paychecks?!
I made a chase checking account just for this. I wanted to do USAA before but dont qualify. THanks chase :)
I got this app. It's actually really cool and really well made.
Won't lie. My EVO a bit jealous of my wife iP4.
@MiddleWay
Bring to android please!
So how long does it take for the check to clear? I go to the branch because my check is available next day... with ATM its 2-3 days.
@novawes
It is available next business day if a hold is not placed by loss prevention.
Wow, this is really cool! I often don't cash checks because I don't ever go to the bank, and by the time I get there, it's way past the acceptable timeframe. Something like this could be a real boon to the bottom line. Come on, Wachovia/Wells Fargo, make it happen!
AWESOME! Too bad it doesnt work with real cash too.
Works great, already deposited a check that has been sitting in my desk for awhile.
Hmm, isn't this gonna open the floodgates for counterfeiting...? Also, I'd say it's a good idea for a bank to actually get the check after you deposit it.
@Darkroom
Truth hurts, so sometime we have to cover it up to make ourselves feel better and then convince other to do the same.
Sent from a friend iphone 4.
Checks? Thats so 20th century. You americans really need to move on...
Hm, after updating the app, I don't see the bottom option to deposit. Is this for iOS4 only? I'm on jailbroken 3.1.2.
If only JP Morgan / Chase was going to stop hating their customers in tandem with this move. Unfortunately, until they do that, I think I'll have to continue to stay away from them. They're not just a megabank, they're a megabank intent on separating you from every dime they possibly can.
I've been in the Army for 8 yrs & bank with USAA. They don't have atms & they were the 1st bank to use this tech.
Tried this out with a Sprint rebate check that took two months to arrive after my purchase of a Sierra Wireless 3G/4G hotspot. Hardest part was holding the my 3GS still enough to properly frame each side of the check without blurring the image.
The app signed me up immediately without needing the website to do anything. What I find far more newsworthy is that there us even a person to person service that doesn't use checks at all although that service DOES require signup via the website. The funds will be available next business day. In my case that means the 6th of July after the US Independence Day holiday.
My local branch is within 10 minutes walking distance and I could have gone in and hit on the pretty teller instead. But this is an awesome service for times when people insist on writing you a check. Way more excited about the person to person service though.
US Bank is about to allow deposit of checks by scanning them.
The US banking system - just in line with the US cellphone network.
Seriously whenever I read about the US banking system I'm amazed people accept this kind stone-age system.
Wire-transfer all the way :)
@comix Actually, the app has done wire transfers since it first shipped. For a fee of course. The new person to person payment system us way cooler though.
DELL!!!
I made a deposit Friday, because of the holiday it should go through by Wednesday. Let's see how it goes.
This needs to come to android. That is awesome.
I've been doing this with USAA for awhile now and it's pretty awesome.
This app is FAIL.... I can't use it because of the stupid $1,000 daily limit. My paychecks are higher than that so I have to use a branch or if I don't mind waiting a ridiculous FOUR DAYS for the funds to clear, I can use an ATM.
And before anyone says direct deposit... my payroll company doesn't offer it except to our CU. Also... FAIL.
