HP laying off some Palm staff as integration begins
It's not totally unexpected, but apparently HP is laying off some Palm staffers now that the buyout is official. We don't know exactly how many people are being let go, or in what departments -- it certainly makes sense for HP to trim away some administrative and support positions as it integrates Palm into its larger organization -- but there's no question that Palm's lost some key people ever since this turmoil began, and we're definitely curious to see who's left standing after these cuts. For what it's worth, Palm told All Things Digital that "part of the integration strategy is consolidation of functions and operations, as appropriate," and that "Palm employees overall are enthusiastic about having the financial stability and global scale necessary to complete their vision," so we've got hope -- after all, HP needs Palm just as much as Palm needs HP.

ugh
@caprice
ah, what am i saying, we're all in rough times i guess.
@caprice WOW HP! You're losing some REALLY good people, you could have kept them to help you make better WebOS products.
@statickeith
hey now i like palm!
@caprice
Many of us have been there... many others need to be!
@caprice imho the employees should be happy. Who really wants to sit by and watch all their hard work get wasted; PRINTERS? Really?!?!
@caprice
There goes my year end bonus. :(
@caprice please, see this if you got any doubt about what hp and palm want to do together.

@caprice ҉
@statickeith Whoa, buddy. Most likely these people are HR, payroll, accounting, etc... That type of stuff will be taken over by the departments that already exist at HP.
@sweet greggo part deux
I was thinkg the same thing. I have no worries, can't wait for my new WebOS device!!!!
@caprice
i know, read that stupid quote
Palm employees overall are enthusiastic about having the financial stability and global scale necessary to complete their vision"
lol they sure are enthusiastic when you just let them go!!!
@caprice
Big fish eat little fish. Big fish shits out little fish...
@sweet greggo part deux
agreed! It's not talent, just redundant HR & admin staff.
When Radioshack discontinues your phone, you blew it:
http://erictric.com/2010/04/19/radioshack-discontinues-the-palm-pre-and-palm-pixi/
The Pre that remade Palm is dead and HP won't revive it. HP could've saved a lot of money just putting Android on their devices.
WebOS is neat but it will be nothing more than an albatross round their necks because Google win on volume, Apple win on quality and customer loyalty. HP will have neither on the WebOS products.
@caprice
WE WANT PRE2! WE WANT PRE2! WE WANT PRE2! WE WANT PRE2!
@sweet greggo part deux That unfortunately is not the case. A good friend in engineering was let go along with others in engineering.
@Ellianth and netbooks, and tablets, and phones. Everybody thinks that HP just bought Palm to stick on printers, do you really think they would spend $1.2 bil on printer software? Yes, that might be a part of the plan, but not the only part. Think of it from a business standpoint: and employer gives all his employees a pixi and a webOS netbook. Those are seemlessly integrated in the office envornment because the printer also runs webOS. Now think of it from a consumer standpoint: the person buys a pre and a webOS tablet. Bingo, the paid apps can be used on both devices and the best mobile OS is now on 2 devices they use daily. If HP plays their cards right, this could be amazing.
@TinWard
While Apple designs overall good devices, it has had its share of bad quality over the years.
Palm says, FUCKERS
HP says, Your Fault
@rmbrown09
HP are the fuckers here.
I'll be a really sad panda if WebOS is not implemented in any other phones :(
@Mr Blue will be implemented in more phones and slates even.
They should have just let them operate as an independent unit. All Palm needed to be successful was some money and good hardware.
@ssguy isnt it what they are actually doing?.
@ssguy Economies of Scale, as things get bigger they need fewer people running them relative to the size. (until you get to dis-economies of scale of course)
@ssguy
but lets see..if all they are doing is removing the unnecessary departments then its not that bad.
@marcio
yeah i commented b4 reading the entire article. looks like they are just removing the non-essential staff.
Two big companies "merge", this is pretty much inevitable, as was some of Palms key people leaving. You don't want to move to middle management when you used to be the Big Dog in the department.
can't wait for the Palm dx4000vxe with the spiderweb ads and Sex and the City 3 sponsorships
Sucks.....
HP better create something damn well worth this wait and all these moves had better result in a stellar launch product for Summer 2011. I'm looking forward to seeing a true BEAST of a webOS phone next summer to compare with the iPhone 5.
@BrookLynnsFinest Yeah and a measly 3000 apps. Good luck.
@anotherworld
Quality of Apps > Quantity.
But, let that dose of knowledge pass you by as you gawk at 200,000 apps, the vast majority of which you won't see, let alone use, in your lifetime.
all things digital talks about double digits as much. There are redundancias as in financials and so, not engineering.
btw engadget your news yesterday about hp and palm was horrible. You didnt event linked the video where palm and hp talked about what they are planning to do together.
http://www.vimeo.com/13012018
look at what voodoo pc become aftter becoming HP. Hp ate them and spit out the bones. Same thing with palm. Eat and spit
It's about the only thing left that they know how to do efficiently, Laying people off, they've become experts in the field.
Hey HP, make sure you lay off Palm's marketing department.
@jmaine I think their head of marketing "resigned" a month or so back, but I'm right there with ya.
I think palm needed HP much more than HP needed Palm, otherwise we would have saw the buyout go the other way
@Clinton O Um, no. Because one of them had money, the other didn't. It's like a football team- the striker is paid close to nothing and the defender is paid a lot - yet they're equally important to the team even though they're not on the same level in economics.
@Dusse Where the hell do you watch football? Bizarro land? Strikers typically earn the mega bucks. Rooney, Ronaldo, Dogba, Torres make the super money, not the defenders.
Also 'HP needs palm as much as Palm needs HP'. Only in Nerd fairy land. Typical deluded Enagadgeteers...
Out with the fat, time to get moving on some badass products. Obviously there was a bit of trimming that needed to be done, or Palm wouldn't have been so bad off.
A "buyout" to HP actually means..."bye"and out" the door...
@icon808 Should have read 'bye"
I love all the comments here saying hp is going to gut palm and ruin webos. Go do some research and read one article outside of engadget, Better yet, watch 5 minutes of the interview with the hp CTO that has already been linked in the comments several times. Hp has no plans to involve themselves with palm's smartphones, the CTO basically said they plan on letting palm act as an autonomous unit, with access to hp's pocket book. The only layoffs that are going to happen will be in administrative roles, where palm wasn't strong anyways, and the positions are redundant. All of the engineers will remain, which is what we all want to see anyways.
I for one am very optimistic to see what palm will do now that they have the money to fully develop their hardware and software. I will be the first in line to buy my internet connected webos toaster!
I really hope that somewhere, somehow, down the line that HP/Palm release a well thought-out WebOS smartphone. It might not have been the most popular but it was a refreshing step in a new direction that I think could have been utilized very well.
That's one of the main reasons I moved over to Android. Basically all or Majority of the WebOS inventors left the house.
Also, this Evo kicks a$$. But on a serious note. After owning both Android & WebOS, I have to say that I do lean towards WebOS than Android.
The issues that I was having with the Palm Pre were all hardware issues. Original Sprint Palm Pre just plain garbage. I couldn't even play some of the games from the app catalog b/c I would get that "Insufficient Memory" alert.
Totally agree. Like I said, I'm leaning more towards WebOS. But if Google would have purchased Palm. Android would have really taken over the world, lol
C40 WHERE ARE YOU
