Intel set to overhaul desktop CPU range with new models, lower prices
This might be about as shocking as sunny weather in España, but Intel appears set to slash some prices and bump some speeds in its desktop CPU portfolio this quarter. According to DigiTimes and its beloved motherboard maker sources, the desktop dominator intends to introduce a six-core Core i7-970 chip, at a $885 bulk purchase price that should bring the hexacore entry price down from the i7-980X's $999 perch, along with a 2.8GHz i5-760 priced at $205, and -- intriguingly -- a quad-core i5-870S designed specifically for small form factor machines and costing an appropriately inflated $351 a piece. Finally, there's word of a most welcome price tumble for the 3.06GHz i7-950, which moves down to the $294 slot currently occupied by the 2.8GHz i7-930. All this crazy talk seems to reiterate earlier suggestions coming out of HKEPC, so we advise hitting both source links and drawing your own conclusions.

Ouch on prices. Let's see how long my Core i9 becomes old and outdated
@albinomexi I'm still waiting for a logical reason to upgrade when every new build I pay for ends up bankrupting me for a year...
at least Intel doesn't lie to it's customers like Apple did with the iPhail 4 "Grip of Death"
like imagine Intel came out and said "oh.. Gee... We're sorry, our cpu's having been displaying too high a clockspeed figure in windows, and THAT's why performance blows, so we're issuing a "software patch" to "manage your expectations".
except Intel would never do that. Apple on the other hand...
@Mister Warmth
You do know that Intel isn't the happy friendly company that it looks like in ads, right?
I mean, look back at their history with attention to antitrust suits...
right, intel would never go with a design that simply Jackup the CPU clock to catch eyeballs while actually runs real app slower than the previous generation. they would never do something like that.
@MrFluffyThing
I was planning on upgrading in a month, but I guess I need to wait longer! Ugh!
I just got an i7 930 (2.8GHz) at Micro Center for $199.99. In-store pickup only, but it was worth it. :)
@ThornXBL I did also :) Had to make a trip to Long Island
@ThornXBL I got my LGA 1156 version of the 930, the i7-860 for $199 a few months ago. Stock 2.8 with 3.6 Turbo. I see it's $229 @ MC and Newegg doesn't even have it anymore. They were charging $299 when I got it. Crazy - 4 core, 8 thread and OC'd on air to 4.2 @ 1.5V (Prime95'd).
$885 for a 6-Core Processor? Wow imagine the word documents I could crank out with that sucker. I bet my internets would be all kinds of fast too
core i7 950 for under 300 dollars? Yes please!
I think I'll stick with my $180 AMD 965 BE. Runs great at 4GHz.
right because your POS AMD at 4ghz isn't apples and oranges to an Intel i7 clocked to 4ghz right. Lets think real hard who wins that battle.
but you just go ahead and keep buying AMD, someone has to be the guinea pig to keep Intel prices in check for us.
@Mister Warmth
Wow just chill out a second. AMD makes some awesome CPUs as does Intel. I use both Intel and AMD and AMD gives the best bang for the buck IMO. We don't need to insult people over a personal preference.
@Mister Warmth
for a name like mister warmth, that was about the coldest comment i've ever seen...ever
@SlaterGS I'm going to stop you at "Wow" and let that sit for a minute. Now, if I was charging by the hour I'd let you go on and on, but well, I'm not.
@Mister Warmth
Was that supposed to be funny?
@Mister Warmth - What the hell is your deal?
@SlaterGS I'm going to stop you at "Wow" and let that sit for a minute. Now, if I was charging by the hour I'd let you go on and on, but well, I'm not.
@Mister Warmth
You guys don't know, Mister Warmth is the real Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons; sarcastic social outcast no-life geek that's putting WAY too much of his time into this trivial discussion.
@MRCUR
You know, you could just get a six core Phenom II 1055T for less then 200 bucks, or the 1090T for less then 300... AMD has the best deals. I have never seen a reason to use Intel, except for the disappointing Phenom 1 series.
@Eliasj Yeah but you can get a 4 core 930 or sometimes even an 875K for less than $200 as well at Microcenter that'll annihilate the 6-cores you mention.
@Eliasj Upranked. I love my 1090T, it makes short work of video encoding for under $300. A great buy for a budget-minded workhorse computer.
@tekdemon Bull. It might for single-threaded applications, but in well threaded ones it is equivalent to Intel's top shelf quads and edging into 980x territory overclocked.
Why is the table in the same colour scheme as the technology board on 4chan.
Good job I waited then.
I wonder if this means apple will finally update the iMac lineup?
@KJ42
Don't they have i series on them already?
@KJ42 Nope, because Apple don't actually use any desktop processors in their line-up. Crazy, I know.
Finally. I thought they would never have i7 920 replacement.
@YpoCaramel Like the i7 930?
@spin cycle that wasn't much of an upgrade =p
right, intel would never use a design that just jack up the clock number but end up slower running real app than their last generation CPU. oh, no, never..
@xsxs Erm, I recall many reviews suggesting that the Nehalem chips beat their Core 2 equivalents by a sizeable margin..
Advanced Micro Devices. That is all.
What is still-relevant under-$100 Intel CPU?
@Dummy00001
I suppose that depends on how you define 'relevant'. The S775 Pentiums aren't bad by any means and S775, S1156 and S1366 are all equally dead-end at this point.
@Dummy00001
None, if you want cheap, go AMD. Intel's low end processors suck. They are only competitive in the $200-$300 range, or higher if you want the best performance (regardless of price...).
And socket type is generally irrelevant to performance and price...usually just indicative of older/newer stuff.
@Dummy00001 The whole Wolfdale core lineup...They OC like champs. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007671%20600005665&IsNodeId=1&name=Wolfdale
@Dummy00001 In fact, there are like 5 listed in the graph at the top of this article...
@Exodite Did you just say that every current Intel socket tech is dead? Sarcasm, I hope?
@felipedeeznuts
They are all _equally_ dead, or rather dead-end, as future processors (Sandy Bridge) will require different sockets. Heck, S775 seems to be getting more new processors than S1156 or S1366. Granted all Pentiums but still.
So no, not sarcasm.
How is Intel releasing new cpus and slashing prices this quarter shocking? They've only been doing it like that the last three or four years...
I was hoping for news of their new architecture, but I suppose it's still possible they'll release it this year if they can keep to their schedule.
@YuriTenshi
Sandy Bridge (New Arch) is not slated until Q! 2011.
It's funny, but according to weather forecasts, Spain will be quite cloudy this weekend. Actually, Google says it is raining in Madrid right now.
@Elideb
That is correct, it is raining here.
