Penguin United's Eagle Eye brings WASD to your PS3 shooters, disrespect to your enemies (video)
With the PS3's plethora of USB ports scattered across the front, you'd think it'd be a no-brainer that all shooters on the console would support keyboard and mouse controls to make the FPS purists happy. Sadly that's not nearly the case, so it's up to companies like Penguin United (creators of a fine array of silly Wii peripherals) to fill the void. The Eagle Eye is its attempt, a surprisingly sizable box with an unfortunately short 2-foot USB cable and inputs for mouse and keyboard. Using buttons on that box you assign controller inputs to keys and away you go, hunting the Helgath's worst in WASD. The cost is a bit steep at $60 when it ships later this month, but nobody said having a (possibly imaginary) unfair advantage over the competition would be cheap.
PENGUIN'S EAGLE EYE CONVERTER SOARS AT E3
Seamlessly Transfers Command from PS3 Controller to PC Mouse and Keyboard for
Lag-Free First Person Shooters
FREMONT, CA (JULY, 2010) – Penguin United launched its Eagle-Eye Converter at E3 and the response from attendees was overwhelming and unanimous – first person shooting games play better using a mouse and keyboard. The Eagle-Eye, which converts a keyboard and mouse into a controller for PlayStation® 3, was widely praised by gamers and journalists for its accuracy and lag-free response (E3 Attendee Response).
One of the drawbacks with playing first-person shooters is the lack of speed and accuracy offered by traditional console controllers. The Eagle-Eye simply bypasses the controller by transferring the button features directly to a computer keyboard and mouse. The Eagle-Eye offers an amazing alternative for fans of shooting games, providing the seamless and smooth shooting experience of a PC game.
"We were so excited by the response the Eagle-Eye received from gamers, journalists and retailers at E3," stated Richard Huang, President of Penguin United. "The most consistent feedback we got from people was about the lack of lag time using the mouse. Everyone who tested it was amazed by how accurate and smooth the mouse works on games like Kill Zone 2 and Modern Warfare." Continued Huang: "As one gamer jokingly put it; 'the Eagle-Eye is the best console controller since the PC was invented'."

Man, you made me scroll back and look at somthing, i wish i hadn't
Dunno what Engadget's smoking, the Keyboard and Mouse isn't an imaginary advantage but a -huge- advantage over using a controller.

I'll need it! I'm planning to get myself a PS3 this fall and I heard that there will be a GTA collection with all the titles from PS2 redone for PS3 in HD. I'm used to play them with the keyboard so I'll definitely get one of these.

I hope online games look for and refuse to use these types of devices while multiplayer gaming. Even if it means only first party controllers can be used online.
IMO this would be cheating if used online. Your using something that was never meant for a console. You would have a huge advantage over someone who would be stuck with a controller. Not everyone has the setup to use something like this.
what the hell is WASD? -oh, it's the inverted-t mimicking the arrow keys on a keyboard? -for real? it's great trying to keep up to speed on tech-stories with a bunch of esoteric crap to sort through, that's showing up fifth on a google search to boot. shouldn't we all just KNOW what the hell WASD is referring to? quit impressing your friends and inform your goddamned readers!
@iptydafu
WASD has been a PC gaming convention since Quake1 came out in about 1996. I don't mean to be insulting, but have you been under a rock for nearly 14 years ? How could be a gamer of any kind and not know this ?
@ChrisG: I'm not a gamer, but then neither is Engadget a gamer site. I shouldn't have to be a gamer to understand an article on a peripheral for a popular entertainment console. And the whole "under a rock" thing is my point in one; who's the target audience for this site? I've been reading it for six years now, several times a day, so I'd be surprised to find that it's no longer me.
@iptydafu well, maybe you're thinking this is inspector gadget fansite.
even if you didn't use wasd you've probably seen a keyboard and know the wasd keys are close to each other. you've probably someone see play a first person game, if only on television.
so the target audience never apparently was you. and you should be thankful to know this basic controlling scheme now. the reason why it's popular is that it's pretty good. around the wasd keys there's enough keys for additional actions and 12345.. keys are right near it too, and ctrl alt and space are usable while using wasd as well, giving you as much controls as you have fingers. thats why it's better than using the numpad or the directional keys for movement.
it simply is better controlling scheme than some schemes tried out before(and after), like ultima underworlds all mouse scheme or even system shock 1's scheme, though you could argue that ss1's controls enable more precise aiming. in these games you had a cursor on the screen that you used for movement and for attack/shooting. very intuitive to start using with just mouse, but the control is not as good as with wasd+mouse.
the only shortcoming of the wasd system is that the movement control is digital in nature(so you need a walk/run button).
besides, engadget has had plenty of stories about gaming controllers in the past. and wasd is used in other virtual reality applications than just games.
The only reason i dont buy a console is this right here. The lack of keyboard/mouse dumbs down your skill level, and (cant believe nobody brought this up yet) makes RTS games useless. RTS on consoles = i'm sold
lol nerds wearing geeky clothes
@Itami prob for engadget the only advantage would be being able to use the iphone game interface with the ps3
This is not new... I myself have been using the FragFX version 2 for the last few months owning on MW2 and BFBC2. And they even have a wireless version out.
Check out splitfish on google.
Now I just need a keyboard and mousepad that fit on the arms of my recliner. Maybe they can put gas and brake pedals in the footrest.
My only issue is the same one I have with using the mouse on a PC: Traverse speed. If it had a key to quickie turn backward like a real human no one could beat you until they had a set up like yours.
I'm still waiting for a dualshock 3 where the right analog stick is replaced with a trackerball..
But one thing I hate about console games, is that you can't assign buttons yourself, in most games you can only select between a few default configurations, whereas on the PC you can almost always assign any button to any action you like.
Also this eagle eye isn't the first on the market with a mouse/keyboard converter, but it's the cheapest yet...
BRAVIA with PS3 路过~~
I need something like this for my 360.
I refuse to play shooters with a gamepad.
Fantastic. So readers shouldn't bother reading articles with unnecessary insider jargon? "brings WASD to your PS3" vs. "replaces controller with Keyboard/Mouse on your PS3" -Awesome. Must be the goal of every blog looking to make a profit; tell the exact same story, but use language that shrugs off a bunch of your readers. -Wicked-fresh! As this is happening more and more on Engadget, I'll know to just jump to another pop-tech blog bookmark.
I've been using the Splitfish Frag Fx mouse/nunchuck controller since last october. I just play Battlefield Bad Company 2 with it these days (gave up on MW2 after playing BFBC2).
What I like is that there are still are the 4 buttons (square/circle/triangle/X) where your right thumb is. This does give me the advantage of being able to fully run around, aim and shoot while holding down circle to arm/disarm an m-com.
Overall though their mouse is not nearly as nice as playing desktop PC.
But I'm glad to see there are more options coming out for getting a keyboard and mouse onto the PS3 as the dualshock controller was the reason I didn't bother playing FPS on it.
what is a helgath? do they mean helghast?
well, I hope it doesn't work. Because it would suck to play against people using this online (in shooters)! Very unfair.
