BMW Megacity EV gets sketched out in more detail
Admit it, you've been desperately refreshing this page in the simple hope of learning more about BMW's first all-electric vehicle. Originally announced with nary a visual clue to its appearance, the Megacity has now been fleshed out in the above futuristic sketch, which gives us an inkling of the car's design direction. Don't expect it to have too much bearing on the final product, though -- we do anticipate the real deal to have, y'know, tyres. BMW is also putting together an all-new chassis specifically for this battery-powered city transporter, and has already begun crash-testing the carbon fiber-equipped shells. In spite of its compact dimensions, the Megacity is being described as a "premium sustainability" vehicle, meaning its 2013 launch will be relevant to a somewhat select group of people.

I like how illustrators always make these crazy rims that never see the light of day. How awesome would that be if they made it just like that wit no changes?
@max3000 @ rezm
The cars never look like this because there needs to be a space between the wheels and the body for dirt to fall off as it will be an indoor car otherwise.
The lights need to be considerably bigger, or this will only be daytime car.
There need to be door handles....... cramble zones......
Concepts, don't take real world into consideration, so they never get released the way they are drawn.
@max3000
Who wants a yuppiemobile anyway?
@Kuzma the door handle thing could b solve with a small slat that hide a capacitive pad behind it, i think there are some cars that implement that as 4 the headlights never doubt the power of really bright LEDs the e-trons headlight are completely LED..... then again its a concept 2
@max3000 pretty awesome...im thinking it needs like, rubber though haha....i take all these concepts with a fistfull of salt now that the venture one concept has been killed...i really wanted that car :(
@max3000
Concept cars are always U A F.
@McKirf Don't really care about the yuppiness - I just care about spending less on gas.
@ChronoSapien Heh... Non wireless doors you say...
How about this scenario. You forgot to switch off your sidelights. You go to sleep, you wake up.
Hmmmm door doesn't open :( the battery must be dead. I'll just jump start it and off I go. I'll just open the bonnet... OH WAIT, the bonnet opener is INSIDE the car FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU.
:) And that is why you need handles and key holes.
I know fist hand coz I take my battery out of my RX-8 for when I go to a different country and leave it in a garage. Found out the hard way that I don't have a key hole on the passenger side of the car having parked the drivers side right at the edge of the garage and taken the battery out.
I felt like a squid with a fish in a jar :)
@max3000 : what if they make it a tron-mobile?
@Kuzma What the hell is a "cramble zone"?
@Twitchy I think he meant "crumple zone" which are the spaces with are designed to sort of implode on themselves to absorb the kinetic energy from a car crash so that it is not transferred throughout the entire care and, by extension, it's passengers. Also, is anyone else just wishing that Saab would have brought the Aero X concept to market? That was one of the most beautiful concepts I had ever seen.
Tire spokes are off center, please redraw.
@One Love
mm pretty sure those wheels are concave. Meaning that they're correct.
no thanks...
@Drummrgy
Yeah because if they give it to you, you will push it down a lake.
@krishansy
No, but for the premium they're charging these days for EVs, not to mention that it's a BMW, you can get a sweet piece of ride.
I am enticed by Tesla however...
@Drummrgy
BMW 6 series vs Tesla Roadster?
@Drummrgy agreed. electric cars are useless, isnt it like 16 hours of charge for 4 hours of driving? screw that. any charging time that takes more than 3 or 4 hours and doesnt give you more than 10 hours is useless.
I honestly refresh this page to get cell phone news... and why do car models always look futuristic, but never get released to the market?
looks cool i guess lol... but again these sketches are always over-optimistic amazingly wishful ideas... but in my dreams.. well i would buy it in a second... but seriously lets hope this gets somewhere
@abaleh777
Disclaimer: Artist's impression, will not come to market as appears abve
Judge Dredd approves of the name.
Engadget, you'll be getting a review model of this correct?
Lets just hope the final design stays truer to this sketch, and doesn't turn out like the Chevy Volt did.
I'm really hoping BMW moves fast on their new alternative cars - no matter what they look like. I realize hybrid and electric cars may not go hand in hand with saving money any time soon but I hate going to the gas station for any reason.
I was looking at replacing my 10 year old Acura and the new model that replaces my car still gets the same crappy MPG (oh and it looks hideous). I looked at the Lexus ES which is slightly more expensive but it also gets crappy gas mileage. I tried the Prius and they've made very little progress IMHO on the car since the original design. When it came out it was almost revolutionary because even though hybrid technology has been around for ages there wasn't much on the market.
The new 60MPG/350HP BMW coming out in a couple of years may be well out of my price range but I'd think that a 40MPG/250HP vehicle wouldn't be impossible to afford in a mid level car in the near future. http://www.digitaltrends.com/lifestyle/cars-lifestyle/bmw-vision-efficientdynamics-concept-62-mpg-and-0-62-in-4-8-seconds/
best cars to drive :)
only the misinformed think mb is better.
Oh really?
I demand that you apologise to my Volkswagen Beetle, NOW!
I've always wanted a "green" BMW.
But what do the cup holders look like?
Carbon fiber, on an electric car? Do they realise how much that will cost?
@Pryomancer why would that be different then a normal car?
@dagetz Electric cars will only make a difference if there are lots of them. A car with a carbon fibre chassis is not cheap, ergo nornal people won't be buying them.
@Pryomancer - um....yeah... it's BMW...
@Brokinarrow What's your point? A BMW with carbon fiber is more expensive than a BMW without. Same with any car.
The funny thing is, if a car maker ever did have the guts to sell even just one model, just one, that looked as futuristic as their concepts do, it would sell like crazy! People always want something different, to stand out. And for the most part, so many cars look exactly like. But if you had something that truly looked like it was from the future, it would stand out above them all. People would go nuts for it.
@jmactacular
.... hence, the Nissan Cube
@jmactacular And Honda Civic hatchback
BMW already makes a full electric production car, the Mini E..
really like the design
I’m thinking what appears to be wheels are actually ‘tweels’ that have been under development for past three years over at Michelin. They incorporate the wheel and tire as a single unit and they actually flex in spring like’ fashion over road irregularities. They are markedly lighter and don’t require air or associated parts. It’s simply a matter of time before they hit the road. Anyway, that's my guess.
Regards,
Dan
Here are some pictures of them testing and building the car... Can't wait 4 this 1! I love BMW's just hope this car doesn't cost over $20,000 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=404080
@kidvalor Do you honestly think that an All-electric BMW made entirely of carbon fiber is going to cost LESS then the Nissan Leaf? You must be insane... If this car sells for less than 40000 (or even 50000/60000) I would be shocked.
BMW have been working on electric cars since 1993 with the E1. It had better have the kidney grille and rear wheel drive.
2013? We'll all be gone by then..
So like, how is the suspension supposed to move?
I like the concept but to bad they'll dumb it down and put out a new design that will suck...compared to this one.
Buut, since its BMW, maybe they'll put out a car that is better for the environment annnnd looks great too. Because the Leaf, Volt, and other options don't cut it for me.
Believe it or not, last saturday, I overheard what a german businessman on the table next to me in a Hamburg Café said. I guess he was so talktive because of that blond girl. He said he were in some venue for a secret presentation for a prototype car of one of the big three german car manufacturers. The room was all in black curtains and guest had to sign, that they'll not tell anything. The only more details I heard were: new materials, hybrid engine wich will run on fuel with just 1.8 l/100km or run on electricity only.
...they will make it ,but by the time you get your hands on one - every other car will look just the same
=.="
No, I've been refreshing your RSS feed obsessively for the past few days looking for more news on the american "Galaxy S Smartphones." Gimme a release date! Now!!! And a price wouldn't be too bad, if irrelevant over the contract. Oh and good Verizon for announcing a good android phone that isn't a racehorse duct taped to a scud missile.
I've been refreshing the page waiting for news of the HTC Vision (not the Nexus Enterprise you called the "Vision") and a GSM version of the Epic 4G.
