Mongoose Studio's dozen iPod cluster display is an expensive way to watch Tron (video)
Most of us would be happy to get a single video to play on our PMP without having to run it through some sort of transcoder first, but the folks at Mongoose Studio needed something more complex. They've released a video of a project that's been in the works for some time, clustering 12 iPod touches into a sort of bezel-riffic widescreen display. All are controlled by a master, 13th iPod that can cause them to display a clock in the interest of verifying synchronization (which is far from perfect, as you'll see in the embed below), or to trigger the playing of a movie. We're guessing that the footage must be manually split into appropriate files for each device, and we're also guessing that horrible things would happen should someone come along and re-shuffle them. But, if you have a lot of friends with iPhones and a lot of free time to prep the film, this could make for a rather interesting movie night -- until someone gets a call, that is.

@loadoftoad
Choice B please :D
Hm. Do this with iPhone 4s, and you get a 3840x1920 display...
@loadoftoad
dont forget $3.99 for a case of vaseline ;)
iFinity
@ssgadget
Do that with 12 EVO's (or any other device that doesn't have 3" of bezel)j and it could be cool.
Synchronizing 12 devices to play video files ... not sure I see this as being really newsworthy.
@ssgadget
heh, heh...Motorola patent much?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/motorola-patent-combines-multiple-devices-to-make-one-large-disp/
@FNG
He also said that you would be recieving phone calls on your ipod touch
Massive bezels.
It's goofy and pointless and nerdolicious. And that's the point. Doing spiffy things just cuz you can. "Stupid Christopher Columbus... Sailing off to fall over the edge of the world." "Stupid Edmund Hillary for climbing that mountain." "Stupid astronauts going to a moon with no air or (at the time) resources we can exploit... What's the point?" Cuz it's kind of cool. Sheesh.
@sweet greggo part deux
Ur not worth much then cuz that's only $3.2/hour.
@furquanatique
I didn't know engadget had a gun to your head; making you click on their post. If it's not worth it to come in and take a gander, then why even come in at all? Chill the eff out or don't come in but either way, stfu.
@furquanatique
now im not an apple hater [nor lover]
but my real complain here is shouldn't this be under alt?
@ssgadget
Imagine having to recharge all these bastards, lol, not worth it.
Would have been more impressive if:
A) The video were playing at the speed it was intended (not about 20% too fast), and..
B) If they combined the audio output somehow to give a pseudo-surround effect out of the 12 tiny speakers.
They need to take the panels out of 100 iphone 4's and strap them together making a 35 inch, 9600 x 6400 display...that my friend..is hd
@Adolf Hitler Beyond hd that would be sick!!!
WHY NOT LANDSCAPE????
that way there is no bezel interference..
@threpac I can make calls on my itouch, but I can't really receive them, it's ok cause no one calls me anyways, but I did notice that he said that, it was a joke though, and they probably chose itouches so they wouldn't get calls, or probably so they don't need 12 contracts
Didn't they do this with a load of DIFFERENT android phoned to make a simlar array? Oh, its an apple article! Silly me, droids exist not.
@iucidium Android fanboy hypocrite much?
What transvestite made you in charge? its called free will. Something you seem to be devoid of. Have a nice life ;)
nice but the idea is original from berlin with android phones search for blinkendroid
@mrschtief No the idea is age old, like having multiple tvs next to eachother to make like a 200 in screen, stop being an android fanboy hypocrite and complaining that android did it first, you guys all said "just cause the iPhone came first doesn't mean it's better or that android is insignificant" and no just because the iPhone came first does not mean that, but lots of other things do...THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK/TYPE
HYPOCRITE
Awful choice of phone for this experiment due to the god-awful size of the iphone's bezel.
@Accidental Not saying there's no bezel, but for a little nerd fun, this is fine, plus ios I a good platform for complex experiments
@Accidental
An iPod Touch is NOT a phone.
Ignorance is bliss among the braindead Android fans.
@Mike Vick
wow, that's some pretty cheap Vaseline, $3.99 for a case :/
Neat.
this is really cool and a great way to watch a movie!
I bet they can't do the same thing with 50 iPod nanos?!?
@cc3d No, cause there would be many problems: 1. The screen takes up the top half-ish of the screen so there would be 2x as much bezel, and it wouldn't be symmetrical so it would be hard to arrange...2. They don't have wifi or Bluetooth which i assume this uses one of those...3. The screens are so small that I don't think it would end up looking very clear...4. The bezel interference would be colored=distraction...5. You would need sound, although i don't know how they did it with the ipod touches, I didn't pay attention to that part or they didn't show it with sound...6. Bye
@That guy 2 When I said cool, I meant "dumb ass idea". Why do this on anything?
@SEscobedo Worse than that, it's actually only 36 cents an hour.
This has no practical value, and the concept is nothing new. Am I missing something here?
$ 800 x 12 What an Cost Effective Funny Invention
iPhone Fans think they are son of Bill Gate and money don't matters for them. If you really want to invent something do something sensible. making Remote Display Grid is just show off
I really don't understand. Why not just use one large display. I mean, yeah this is cool, but not worth it haha.
Eyefinity is cooler.
Done properly and in sync:

enjoy
awesome!
OMG, how increadibly useful! Its like watching a movie, in jail! ^_^
Now all you need to do is get another dozen or so iPhones to create a killer surround sound system!
@Sor1 lol
This was done with 49 Android phones in May:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwDey4phQiU
You can download the Blinkendroid app yourself free from Android Market - and play any movie of your choice with it.
@FNG It was a helluva 4th. Thanks, fixed it.
@loadoftoad
CHOICE C
Seeing six couples of iPod "Touch", speaker to Home button, 640*3:480*2 i.e. 1920:960 bezel separated resolution , in a geek orgy = Priceless. :))
