AT&T having HSPA upload speed problems in some markets
There's now a rather meaty thread on Mac Rumors' forums detailing problems that iPhone 4 users have had with miserably slow upload speeds in HSPA-equipped AT&T markets -- speeds that had in some cases been well over 1Mbps before the holiday weekend but have since fallen to 100kbps or lower. A popular theory is that AT&T decided to cap speeds in light of the iPhone 4's success and the danger it poses to network oversaturation, but we're not buying it -- 100kbps is ridiculously slow for an HSUPA-enabled network, even a heavily-used one, and there are huge markets (LA, for example) that seemingly aren't affected. We don't know what's going on, but we've reached out to AT&T for comment and we'll let you know what's up as soon as we do.
Update: AT&T's identified an infrastructure supplier as the culprit and says a fix is in the works.

First
@therealsinclair
to fail.
This is why we cant have nice things.
@therealsinclair
Yes, first to get downranked and pwned. Bitch.

R Tape Loading Error, 0:1
Surprise surprise, AT&T has network problems again -_-
@ChazClout
ignoring that...
are you sure you're "avoiding holding it in that way?"
@therealsinclair
ATT rep: No sir we are not having problems with our network, we are just lowering the speed to coorelate with the low number of bars on your iphone; now they clearly match!
"If you are with AT&T, YOU bBLEW IT"
Every other Carrier.
Sent from not fruit brand working phones.
@Beatnik Catchy post man.
@SolidSnake i try and try to stay as far away from the iphone 4 as possible, but it still manages to ruin many of my days... As long as I'm on at&t there is nothing i can do... I try to return a phone, oh the system is down for preorders... The iphone 4 is released, my San Francisco network speeds are grinding to a halt...
@Beatnik
Blackberries don't work ?
@DefPoet Nor do phones on Orange's network apparently.
@SolidSnake
9/10 rating by Engadget
@cobjones
That rating is bullcrap.
If they reviewed it as a pda, media player, pocket computer than it would be the right rating. But they reviewed it as a phone which it fails at
@DefPoet Listen to the podcast (this weeks (203)). They clearly, clearly stated that it was based on Josh's review phone which hasn't had any issues.
@OjSimpson
People keep saying again, and they also assume that it somehow applies to everyone...
These problems are always isolated incidents but for some reason people blow them out of the water and try to pretend they are major issues.
You only ever hear people talking about bad experiences and complaining very loudly, especially online. You don't hear the people who are having good service because they have no reason to talk about about and they are busty using it just fine.
I've been on AT&T for 3 years now and have never had bad service. It just depends where you live. In fact, my 3Gs right now consistently outperforms my friends Driod on internet speedtests.
I'm getting ~2.5Mbit down and ~1Mbit up here in Sussex, WI with a ping of ~200ms.
@OjSimpson
I'm in Seattle, WA and i'm pulling 1.8 Mbps down and only 86 Kbps up....sigh
@tu eres estupido That's why I switched to away from AT&T. A company that is willing to shaft all of its customer base in order to polish ONE product doesn't really doesn't care about its customers.
@SirMaster Well it doesn't surprise me you're beating out EVDO, since it barely crosses the mark as 3G. But that's still nothing compared to TMO's HSPA+ network where im currently getting in most cases 4mbit down and 1mbit up and have seen it upto 5mbit down 2 mbit up at times, and my HD2 technically isn't HSPA+, it is HSPA7.2. It still basically equals what Sprint is trying to pawn off as 4G
@therealsinclair
3059/649 in east Texas. I usually see 1200-2000 on the upload.
@DefPoet
Sarcasm
@therealsinclair before we got tmobiles 4g like speeds i got over 5 mb download and close to 2mb upload where i live and its a big city this is sad lol
@therealsinclair
lol... They're probably just holding it wrong.
Anywho... It's pretty sad that these low speeds that are reported are almost the speeds my Apartment gives me as a commodity.
@loadoftoad Sweet!
@d0ug
Evdo is plenty fast.
The reason it is slow on phones is the carriers putting a low buffer limit. If you change it like for example on the palm pre you can get over 2.3 Mbps a sec
@OjSimpson we are slowed way downnin Vegas since the weekend. I was hoping they were working to improve not slow us down worse. I came over just for the iphone 4 and had to wait for that also.
@therealsinclair
at&t will probably try to blame the consumer
your upload is us downloading from you, sir
that means you are not holding the iphone 4 right
good day
(i think the reason that apple guy left his phone in the bar is because he was right handed)
My iPhone 4 has been slow on AT&T. Can't wait to hop to Verizon in January.
@sspirate Which baseless rumour are you basing this on?
@d0mth0ma5 I'm pretty sure huffington post confirmed it for December/January. Look deeper into engadgets articles I'm sure you'll find it.
I cant wait to use sprint or verizon... AT&T sucks!!
@sspirate
Why? AT&T's Edge network is about the same speed as Verizon's 3G network. And AT&T seemingly is less expensive, last I checked. On Verizon they say you have to spend $45/mo on a data plan in order to be able to get Push Email, plus another $3/mo to get visual voicemail. Plus, their Voice and Text plans are more expensive than comparable.
Compared to AT&T's $30/mo unlimited any kind of data and included visual voicemail ... plus AT&T's proven faster transfer speeds and coverage that's nearly identical ... why would you want to pay more for less?
Plus, Verizon has publicly stated that they have no interest in the iPhone and are very happy with their collection of Droid phones. If you want Verizon, get a Droid Incredible ... it's really almost no different than the iPhone except for marketing and a few interface differences.
@sspirate I remember all the rumours about it before and after the iPhone 4 event but we won't know for certain until Gizmodo buy one stolen from a Verizon employee.
@James Sonne AT&T don't offer an unlimited data plan any more.
@James Sonne http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/06/verizon-ceo-confirms-hes-told-apple-he-wants-the-iphone-wont/ He does want it, he'd be a fool not too (despite the other great phone on his "roster"), but he doesn't know when Apple will offer it to Verizon.
@James Sonne
Identical coverage.
Wtf are you smoking.
ATT 3g courage is abysmal.
Sprint has about 5 times arts coverage and Verizon has even more. And ATT edges speeds are not even close to Verizon 3g.
ATT 3g is good if you live in a covered area that dos not have a give population. T-mobiles is faster though
@DefPoet I don't know what @James Sonne is smoking, but what are you smoking?!
First you question AT&T's courage, and then you're all bothered about Verizon covering the Arts. Stick to the point...
@DefPoet the verizon data plan is 30 dollars unlimited, and who uses visual voicemail? i hae google voice, wich is free, and does the same thing.
@DefPoet well last I checked I get full reception everywhere in my house my area all the way to downtown Portland Oregon. I have 4 t-mobile g1 and 1 Rogers dream the edge hits around 25-30 down 20-25 up. 3g (H on my phone) hits 1.6 to 2mb down and around 100-300 up. (100 as of recent) ATT has had better coverage in Portland than anyone. Even in clean rooms or down in a business underground floor... I've had full reception on where Sprint cricket Verizon and most the time t-mobile. Sometimes t-mobile is equal. Which is why I pay 10 a month for ATT unlimited data hands down the best!
@ohnoitsaspider Yes, they do. Grandfathered.
Wait, some markets?
That's the understatement of the year.
ATT sux.
@wakeup
Yeah big time
I use the national carrier here in switzerland and it is only when im highup on a hill or high up in the moutains I loose my 3g connection and anyways it is "bloody" fast any where I go so clearly at&t can not set up a "usable"network.
Swisscom is ten, if not 100 times better than AT&T ;-)
why am i not surprised...
Not sure if this is related to AT&T's cell network, but I also use their DSL at home. I usually have a very fast connection but oddly I was getting only a 100kbps download speed.
@sspirate I currently have a 54Mbps connection right now. Maybe because I have U-verse.
@Maxipad
You don't have a 54 Mbps connection. The Max U-Verse offers is 24 Mbps . The 54 is the max of your G WIFI Router.
No problems here in south florida with the ATT 3G network http://uploadingit.com/view/bga5govmhvcdqqcc/photo.PNG
@Maxipad - Please learn the basics of WiFi speeds vs. your Internet speeds.
@Maxipad Yeah well I have 1.0Gbps on my UVerse connection, but the internet isn't as fast as you think it would be.
@sspirate
Dude, I notice this SAME problem as well. I think it might be bigger than just the cell network
