Auto-lacing sneaker laces itself, is looking for a friend

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Why did they choose such a funky shoe?
@IAmAlive so funky people can have friends of their own...
@IAmAlive
It's a back to the future reference, not that it justifies the horridness of them.
@IAmAlive
L2BackToTheFuture?
@IAmAlive Do the shoes come with a hoverboard??
@IAmAlive well ill tell you why for starters the movie had "funky shoes" and if you were to refer to something like that... the closer yours look the better. And I'm sure they bought those drunk and decided they did not need them any more. Besides I would use better serves and add a little more torque that and longer ARM. So it could maybe clamp down the top laces better.
@amigocesar Those shoes are sick. You must be an old fart if you don't like themz
@IAmAlive this really isnt *lacing itself* as much as just having a motor pull on a string. i thought it was going to be it actually making a bowtie knot and all that. darn you engadget.
@IAmAlive
I'm not sure why they went with such a goofy shoe or a goofy concept.
It's like putting a noose or a tourniquet on your foot and then just waiting for something to go terribly wrong...ouch...squeeze...pop.
If you're that lazy all you really need is speed laces (bungee laces) like they use for fast transitions in triathlons.
@huskie fluff Haven't you seen Back to the Future II, they do what this shoe does, kinda, without the crazy motor
@bigmattown
Actually the shoes in BTTF 2 Were Grey:

@huskie fluff
Its okay, you can say damn. I think its justified in this case.
@IAmAlive
The colors look life-like on my Retina Display
@IAmAlive
Great Scott!
@liftedngifted1 Only 5 more years to go!
*robot voice* YOUR JACKET IS NOW DRYYY
Back to the Future man!
That mechanism is so large! It's like using a bus engine to drive a Moped...
@bit1 thats what she said!
What happens when the battery dies? Or you step in a puddle? :P
@Hondizer
You may want to put it on differently in those instances.
@Hondizer Prototype. Next gen will be built into the soles somehow and USB chargeable. Can see how far you've walked with built in gps. Also starts opens car door when you get close enough
@Hondizer. Then you would probably hve to go back to manually lacing ur shoes.lol
Bring me a Hoverboard.........then we can talk!
@mjkxxl
Here you go http://vimeo.com/11968215
GO BACK TO YOUR FUTURE!~ :]
Dumb
Shows how lazy we really are.
Are you trying to replace my butler?
Pip pip. Cheerio.
You know, today is the day that Marty Mcfly time travelled to in Back to the Future II (July 6, 2010)

In a not so distant future, mankind will have to live in the sea, because automation will make everybody fatter than a humpback whale.
@Hondizer
It would get dirty if you step in the puddle. =]
I like the sound.
Love the reference, even if it's not practical.
Puma had something similar years ago. Nylon fishing line type laces, and a rachet in the middle. They may still make them IDK.
That has to be the most boring, ever.
Can I have an Apple fix please!
Maybe the editor should post a reference to the original BTTF II movie clip so the young whippersnappers in attendance will understand.

After re-watching the video, the shoes in the movie weren't "funky" colored at all. If you're going to go to the trouble of reproducing something from a movie, at least make them look like the props!
Pretty clever. I like it.
You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy.
Or if you're too dumb/lazy to tie your shoes, you could just use velcro... I also had swirly spiral laces as a kid that you just had to pull on and they tightened up.
I miss the Boa from The North Face, can't find it anywhere now, the best lacing system ever on sneakers.
@reapur Have you tried zappos.com?
@joeuu Last I checked they didn't have them, but it's worth another look. Cheers
Just in time for Marty McFly to get here!

@Scorp1us
oh yeah wow. it has been that long already. i love back to the future XD
This just in....Americans and humans alike are becoming even more obese! Reliable sources say that we are getting more and more lazy! How can this be?
wadda gypt, was expecting it to actually lace em up not simply tighten some riot handcuffs. wonder if you gotta cut em off and put 5 new ones in each time :P
no seems to have noticed that this is NOT a self-lacing sneaker. the sneaker is already laced and all that happens in the video is that the laces are being self-tightened. the title of the entry should be changed to reflect this.
I want
What are those, Air Max boots or some shit? Ugliest colorway I've ever seen. Anyway, the idea is cool, but obviously way too clunky. And if you wanted to do them right, you should have at least got some Hyperdunks and done the idea of powerlaces some justice.
