Droid X already knocking on buyers' doors?
This seems to happen with virtually every hotly-anticipated device Verizon ever offers, so we can't say we're too surprised to hear rumors that Motorola's Droid X has already started showing up in customers' hands. Usually, this happens through a combination of persistence, repeated calls to customers service, and finding just the right rep who doesn't realize that he or she shouldn't be selling a particular device yet -- but in the case of the Droid X, Verizon's been teasing the launch with its @DroidLanding Twitter account, saying "you might get yours before" the official July 15 release. In other words, we think we're in the process of getting punked by some viral marketing... but hey, if you're getting punked by something, it might as well be one of the baddest-ass Android phones around.

I'm curious, but why is it that any droid article have to turn into a iPhone hate fest? Just asking.
@Dev one seriously. hate the iphone? don't buy one. you don't need to prove how hard aren't buying one. same with the other side. love your iphone? shut up and enjoy it. neither side needs to justify its choice - just needs to be happy with it. i wonder if these ppl are trying to convince other people or themselves.
@system22
Man, your comments are all over this thread.
You must have a sad life.
@PancakeMix nah just bored. waiting to go home.
@ddddd if these are your two contenders, i think youre gonna want the evo. i have an iphone, have had one since they came out. it fits my needs and im fine with it. before the 4 came out tho i did some research and window shopping. i ALMOST went with the evo. its the only phone that made me question switching platforms. there were a couple things about it that i would have had to have given up by switching from iphone so it didn't, but - the evo was definitely impressive and i'd recommend it for someone not in my position who didn't want an iphone
It seems as if Motorola and all the other Android handset makers still haven't figured out what Apple knows: When it comes to high-end products, presentation is important. Details down to the packaging matter in the overall presentation of your product and, by extension, your brand. Whether or not you like iPhone or Apple, they way they present iPhone is so much more polished than the Droid X. Honestly, the box design for the Droid X looks just like the box design for the Motorola Q I had in 2005: http://pocketnow.com/html/portal/reviews/0000000876/review/MQ_Package_FS.jpg
@andrewbecks
do you honestly think people by the iPhone over everything else because of "presentation?
@Kain125 No, not based on presentation alone. But I think it does help add to the overall appeal of the product and the brand. Same thing goes with high end cars, designer clothes, etc. While they may be very similar products when you strip down to the hardware, the thing that sets them apart is the way they present their brands.
@andrewbecks
Okay I see your point. I thought you were saying that presentation is the biggest thing. But you also have to remember that all of these phone companies just sell phones and dont have a store to their name. Apple does since they do much more than just phones. And in reality people dont see anything like the box that they come in until they buy their phone.
@andrewbecks sheep are not bright creatures
I had verizon, I switched b/c they come out with a diff phone every week and nothing is close to being as user friendly as the IPhone.
By the way, I have service and it works just fine.
@system22 oh yeah - some of the reasons for evo - nice front facing cam, its damn fast, screen looks great, 2.1 was slick and buttery - haven't seen any 2.2 action on it. good build quality overall. the 4g bit is pretty wicked (assuming you live in its unfortunately very limited coverage)
Have as much fun with the Droid as I am with the iP4. No proximity issues and as good or better reception than my old 3gs. Not here for trolling. Just saying research, know the unit's issues, know what you are getting into and buy what your heart desires; you may be dissappointed otherwise in the long run.
For now I think Android is the better OS than iOS4. Apples pride and joy is seeming a little dates (seriously ever since the first one came out not that much aesthetically has changed with the UI). I can understand why people like it. Because it's familiar. The only other thing that it has that's going for it is iTunes integration (which im biased about since I now use a Zune) and the apps (which most of them you can find something as good/ better on android). But other than these two i think Android has the more intuitive interface, looks better, and just performs just as good if not better than the iPhone.
OK thats it I'm calling customer service until I am able to get mine now!!
Damn! I want mine right now too! *Sigh* 9 more days!
Gotta love getting your phone early! Droid X looks pretty awesome, though Engadget's 7/10 rating kinda sucks.
If my new iPhone didn't kick so much ass maybe I'd switch to VZW, but the way things are going there will be a new top android flavor next week/month/year.
Nice, beautiful song
Are you listening Sprint? Get this. I ain't digging the Evo.
Hey thats pretty cool, but my iPhone 4 has a camera flash! Hey it took a little while, but they got it just right, it doesn't even consume battery power! And boy is it bright!
Iphone had to come up with something unique in the 4th iteration, because of Android competition. But people want cheaper phones and the clue is that Apple is still selling the vastly inferior IPhone 3gs with its inferior specs, brick like exterior and crappy screen even compared to the android offerings and that is why Android will win in the long run. Market is about to be flooded. Chinese manufacturers are getting into the act, by year end, we will have 150-200$$ dollar android phones which will match IPhone 3gs
@AppleAndroid This is confusing me- we already have $160 phones that destroy the 3GS and rival the iPhone 4.
Also , google does not give access to android marketplace unless the phone passes CTS and one of the conditions is 3g. Now imagine if 3G condition was removed, I guess Android phones would literally triple its sales in a month. It is a ticking timebomb for Apple. The other timebomb is of course Nokia eventually moving to Android as well as potentially Blackberry. I dont see Blackberry succeeding with their new OS.
@AppleAndroid what are you talking about all the networks support 3G and nobody will buy a non-3G phone.
To all the iF@GS hijacking the thread. Do you remember what Josh and the other guy said on last weeks podcast? If not let me remind you. Both of them said: "I love the hardware of the iPhone but I cannot make it my primary mobile device because I can be much more productive on my Android device. I also feel that iOS has been dumbed down to much and I don't have as many options or customization as I do with Android". Thats right....Basically both of them said, if your a non-tech savy moron then the iPhone is for you. Don't believe me. Go listen to it. It's podcast #44.
With all this bullshit "iPhone is better!" "No Android is better!" bantering going on 24/7 nowadays I have to ask, you idiots realize it's a fucking phone right? And you also realize this is the USA right? Buy whatever fucking phone makes you happy and who gives a rats ass what the guy sitting next to you is using!
@jtf323 Uno problemo señor:
iPhone buyers are usually fanboys who want to prove that Apple are the best and can't possibly be beaten. Android users usually realise that it's not at all important and counter iSheep comments whenever they see one.
Ok so I've been trying to read through to find any insights to the Droid X. Something like maybe someone has one and can expound on it further. Instead I am reading alot about Apple this, Android that, etc. Can we for once focus on the article at hand.
I could care less how you feel about your iPhone. Are you happy? GREAT!! Let me read about the phone here that has sparked my interest. No I don't want to leave my service provider and pay all the associated fees just to get any phone somebody has to rave to everybody about. I'm not just talking iPhone here, I'm also talking EVO, etc.
PLEASE SOMEONE FOCUS ON THE FUCKING ARTICLE!!!!!
@omga14
Indeed.
I can confirm (through maaaagical powers completely unrelated to being a FedEx guy) that the picture definitely shows a Verizon box, and also that it was delivered in El Paso on 7/6/10. I could even tell you who signed for it buuuuut that might be *too* much magic for one day.
@mark20044 So you tease after my rant of madness? How very mean of you sir. Maybe a little personal view review in a day or so?
@mark20044 hmmm.....sounds like the magical (non fedex guy....of course) has actual evidence ;)
Can someone PLEASE launch a GSM phone like this? It's killing me to see all these phones come along crippled by CDMA... I consider working in Europe a feature.
why are there a few commenters talking about the iPhone (Irrelevant) and seem to be stuck in the past (not knowing the iPhone 4 is released, claiming that 3G is a brand spanking new technology etc). Weird..
Can't Apple fanboys and Android fanboys just get along?
@klinbest
I've been thinking that but iphones owners are always arrogants.
They are always sayin, my phone is the best, nananana bla bla bla
@ddddd
Unless you need 4G / Wimax, this looks like a *much* better phone than the Evo.
Just look at the benchmarks. The Snapdragon stuff gets absolutely shredded by OMAP and Hummingbird processors (the nexus still leads slightly until the others get 2.2), and the screen and battery life is likely to be better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilx_cpGZczM
I don't get why this hasn't had anywhere near the publicity of the Evo when it looks so much better.
Also, when is it coming to the UK...?
What's the concensus on this phone vs the Galaxy S variants?
Since the droid x may not be available in the UK before I die, that may be a factor for me...
@fubarweb
Oh and if you need the front facing camera, maybe check out the Galaxy S variants too. They seem to be similarly performing to the Droid X +/-.
If I were on Verizon, the Droid X would definitely be the prime choice.
While it isn't a game changer or anything like that, it's aimed at the whole "I want a smartphone with a big screen crowd", and right now devices like the Droid X are in demand.
Lastly, I don't think people should sell the X short simply due to the fact that it doesn't have a front facing camera.
Excuse me for a second I always wanted to say this..... "DROOOOOOOOOID" there we go have a nice day. (:"
