HTC quarterly profits improve by a third, beat even its own lofty expectations
We were impressed with HTC back in April when it forecast a record $1.6 billion revenue for itself over the second quarter, but lo and behold, the Taiwanese superphone maker has gone and outdone that with a $1.88 billion income over the period between April and June. Reporting a very solid 33 percent improvement in profits year-on-year -- $268 million versus $202 million 12 months ago -- the company points to strong sales (no doubt catalyzed by Android's growing popularity) as the chief culprit for its newly increased tax bill. Guess that shows that having a wide catalog of high-end devices doesn't preclude raking in the cash, provided they're all desirable enough to garner mind and market share.

@Bahumbug Reality check, Apple made more revenue off it's new phone in 3 days than htc makes in 10 months.
@Bahumbug
Not a chance , HTC phones are expensive without subsidies. Nokia will continue rule the world. here hoping nokia use winPhone7 instead of symbian.
@Nehebkau
HTC is Göring to Google's Hitler.
@kent99
Reality Check: Apple is a computer manufacturer that draws most of their revenue from selling gadgets and phones. Rather telling.
@kent99 Clown Check: You passed!
@Nehebkau Every overlord needs a minion.
Market share makes HTC money, whereas mind share is just a nonsense term invented by bloggers.
Go HTC ! I'll be replacing my Hero with another HTC soon.
@fourthletter
Actually mindshare is the reason company's run ads, you chubby little twerp. To remind people that they're still around?
Mindshare leads to marketshare. Which is why its worth discussing, it indicates the direction of future share gains/losses.
@fourthletter
Quoted for truth and for a Bill Hicks avatar.
I've been buying HTC devices since the days of Wizard. Go HTC!
@System I've had them for nearly a decade now as well - only because Sprint didn't carry many other brands. Hopefully with all the income they can start doing a better job of phone testing before they release them to fix issues like -
Bad BT
Faulty receivers
Loose screens
Crappy battery life
@System
I ran my Wizard into the ground, poor thing. Loved that phone.
And this is without Windows Phone 7 in the game yet.
Good job HTC, I simply love my HTC Evo, no problems with it at all.
Very nice results from HTC, though at the same time the revenue is up by almost 60% so it seems that even HTC got hit by tightening profit margins in smartphones.
I know how to make them even more money! Re-release the Touch (vogue) with Froyo for $10 with no monthly data plan. They would make a killing.
@skatekarate Plus, its not like they would have to do any work themselves:

They're still a crappy OEM company. All their phones are cheaply built, except for the Nexus One, obviously because Google demanded more than their own board of directors.
@Yankee Umm... have you ever actually used an HTC phone?
@Yankee
You've obviously never used an HTC phone for an extended period of time. Hell, my Touch Pro 2's build quality is superb; I've dropped that thing more times than I can remember, and it's still going strong.
Also, the Google N1, which is an HTC phone, is still considered one of the best Android phones around.
@skatekarate
What kind of a stupid question is that? The guy's obviously never even seen an HTC phone!
@Yankee Back to HTC's windows mobile days, Ill ive ever heard and seen is high quality. Now that their phones are not at the same high price point before and they cover a whole range of budgets, it would not be unexpected for the build quality to go down on cheaper phones
@Yankee
yeah, well... you know, that's just, like... your opinion, man....
Great!
Now, please make 4.3" Android phone for European market!!!!
Though this may be, I kinda feel like so many options will confuse some buyers. 'The way I see it, if you're gonna build a phone, why not do it with some style? If my calculations are correct, when this baby scores a 49 key keypad... you're gonna see some serious shins.' I know someone who wont switch from his treo 650 because of the lack of keyboards on your current phones. Had it right with WM, almost have it 100% with android
@FlyingAero. Funny, Treo 650 was partially designed by and manufactured by HTC.
The Desire is a great phone, and its the first non-Nokia I have owned in a long while. Their Sense UI is pretty neat. Sure the build quality isn't as good as Nokia IMO, but the Android software makes it I think. If it had anything else, I don't think it would be where it is today.
i love HTC :)
HTC and Nokia are my two favorite companies
They deserve it.
My Desire is the best phone since my iPhones... It might even be better (I have only owned it for a week so the jury is still out).
I wanted to love my Palm Pre but the hardware was dreadful.
I would say FTW but I am not that kind of person.
Real phones can make calls while holding phone on left hand
My Hero wouldn't ring when people called me today, it just silently showed the call screen. Hopefully they'll patch that soon, its not much use having a phone that intermittently won't ri-
Oh, wait.
@r34p3r
Dude, they have broken the 30FPS cap already over at xda-developers. Check it out, there is a fully functional kernal now averaging 43-44 FPS, without errors. the only caveat is that they are still working on getting wifi and 4G working for those who have already downloaded the latest update from Sprint. Won't take long though before that is fixed, maybe today or tomorrow. *** Your phone must be rooted first. Put Damage Control's ROM on your phone if you want your battery to last 12hrs+ heavy usage. Then go to the below link to get new kernal with FPS lifted. It is already smooth as the iphone interface, and they still have about 10 FPS higher to go:

By the way if you are a little nervous about this, I am running Damage Control's ROM, and it still looks stock (has Sense, etc), and I have no more errors than when it was stock.
Damage control's trhead:

@B3nt
Bah.. double post, sorry ignore my above comment, guys
In future news...
HTC saw a large quarter-to-quarter drop in earnings after many potential Incredible owners ditched their pre-orders for the Droid X. Other previously faithful HTC owners on Verizon jumped to Samsung or Motorola devices, as HTC had nothing other than the Imagio and Ozone available for purchase in 3rd quarter.
HTC better get their shit together with Verizon's lineup, or come annual upgrade time, I'm going to another manufacturer. They have nothing currently available (other than the Imagio and Ozone), and no news of anything on the horizon in the next 4-5 months.
This coming from someone whose 6 years of HTC devices include the Harrier, Apache, Titan, and Rhodium.
quietly starting to not care what they produce.
I loved HighTechComputer kit since my O2 XDA Exec(aka HTC Universal). Keep making phones like the Desire and you'll have no problem keeping these stunning profits up.
KUDOS.
Somewhere in these money piles lies my hard earned cash that got me the HTC Magic (MyTouch 3G)
The htc desire is sold loads of times in western europe. on androidworld.nl i Noticed lots of new members of our forums just bought one.. im also a desire user. and if htc keeps making smartphones like the legend desire evo incredible this will not be their peak yet.
When I replace my iPhone 3G, it almost certainly will be with an HTC running Android.
Good. HTC deserve it. I've been with them since the Wizard (O2 XDA Mini S) and I'm currently on a Kaiser. The only reason I haven't upgraded yet is because I'm holding out for another decent QWERTY slider, but don't want to drop for a Touch Pro 2 (despite how sexual they are) for HTC to announce a beefier one soon afterwards. May have to lose my physical buttons and grab a Desire, though.
Samsung said they want 10% of that piece of pie. I have a feeling they started under shipping the AMOLED screen to HTC in order to slow their growth. It will be interesting next couple of years.
Being profitable does not equal having cash.
A profitable company can still go bankrupt.
In the business world, most transactions are done through credit. So a company like HTC may look profitable (on paper), they can in reality have little physical cash in the bank. When creditors suddenly want their seed money back, HTC wont have the cash on hand to give it to them, so they declare bankruptcy (even when they are profitable).
That is the big difference.
My first HTC device was my g1, even with it's flaws it was a great phone. My current phone is a nexus one, and it's so far been the best cell I have used. Awesome build quality, fantastic design and powerful hardware (got my nexus back Jan and it is still able to keep up with the majority of smart phones releasing today). Congrats on the earnings HTC.
See what happens Nokia when you drop the ball? This could be you nokia, you could make the hardware and then put Android OS on some phones and see how the sell, why can't you be like htc? Just shift to hardware manufacture and avoid the software
Give the people what they actually want and be rewarded. Funny how that works! =)
