Though it originally seemed like you'd need to drop an additional $50 annually to get your on-demand TV fix via PlayStation 3, it turns out that the
PlayStation Plus is not
technically needed for
Hulu Plus functionality. Concerned console owners emailing support@hulu.com are being told Sony's premium service is "only a requirement during the preview period," after which point "you should be able to download
the Hulu Plus app," which will still require Hulu's own $10 monthly subscription, of course. We reached out to a Hulu representative and confirmed the above for ourselves -- so the only question is how long you'll have to wait without shelling out.
Good Sony.
@SolidSnake the ps3 can do everthing !!!
@SolidSnake
Playstation + is looking pretty good. Probably gonna get it, def not for hulu. What a waste of money @ $10/mo
@uck
You obviously dont pay your own bills, here Cox cable is close to $120/mo for cable and Internet, this saves me close to $70/mo(I'm in college) and I can still watch any of the shows I love plus old episodes.
Don't get tweaked because you cant catch G4 TV
@uck Good investment
@SolidSnake
you can find a more complete quote here. http://playstationlifestyle.net/2010/07/05/hulu-playstation-plus-not-required-for-hulu-plus/
this story also hit a day earlier than here on engadget.
@SolidSnake so engadget, why is the photo of an ipad?
@Tsaxmafia4Life
What are you talking about? I pay my own bills, Just Internet at $45/ month for 16mbs download. I don't pay for tv. Well because I don't need it. I'm a simple man with simple needs and can get whatever I need through netflix on ps3 and internet on my comps already while my main interest is gaming. I'm in med school so I don't have much time for tv anyway(besides this month). Honestly I still don't get why you assume my case must be identical to yours?
@uck So, you decided to spend the $10/month on Netflix instead of Hulu. Not a strong argument that the price makes it a waste.
Since I don't need (or want) to get discs to watch TV shows, I am planning on dropping Netflix to get Hulu Plus. "Honestly I still don't get why you assume my case must be identical to yours?"
@Tsaxmafia4Life
Comparing Hulu Plus to your cable bill would be a valid point if Hulu weren't 95% broadcast TV shows and 5% cable shows.
@Trexman89
You must be new. Engadget is usually behind with things they don't exclusively break themselves.
This is good news :)
What is the resolution gonna be for the hulu videos?
@LethalLax1 720p for HD stuff. As in: not 1080p/i
The ps3 is amazing !!!!
I don't really see why anyone would pay for hulu, i'd rather just use it for free and pay for netflix
@Measlesopolis
The only way I'd pay for it is if it was Ad free in the programming.
@admlshake
True that.
Ad Free and Ill test it out.
But if there are still Ads, count me out.
@Measlesopolis Well if you wanna watch some of the backlogged shows, it's cheaper to buy a month of hulu than to rent it from amazon vod.
@admlshake
its not very likely if they call it hulu plus (Hp :P)
Wow that is surprising. I thought anything new sony would just add to the PSN plus.
when when?
Cool, now Microsoft just needs to counter and make Netflix not Require an XBOX Live Gold subscription.
@RandomGuy I wonder if they could do that....I mean they may have a deeply worded contract in place
@RandomGuy My understanding is 360 intends to add "extras" to justify it as part of Gold (Hulu Plus Plus?) Anyway, things like watch with a friend and chat I think. Either way, Hulu is not interesting to me.
"so the only question is how long you'll have to wait without shelling out"
At $10/month, I can wait a very long time.
Like forever.
There comes a point when this $10 subscription here $15 subscription there all adds up. I imagine a lot of people are reaching saturation at this point.
So now I have two questions for Hulu Plus:
1) Will it come with an annual deal? ($100 a year, save $20!)
2) Will it get shows I want to watch? (Full seasons of Futurama, Daily Show, Colbert Report, South Park, Simpsons, etc.)
3) Will it get more movies?
4) Can I pay a little extra to get rid of advertisements?
In my opinion, Hulu doesn't seem like the way to go. Netflix is cheaper, doesn't come with advertisements and has a much MUCH larger selection.
@daftrok 2) http://www.multichannel.com/article/449861-Dauman_Viacom_Could_Return_To_Hulu.php -
They said - "If they can get to the point where the monetization model is better, then we may go back"
@daftrok I think people arent realizing that Netflix doesnt get its shows until the full seasons are released on DVD/Bluray - as where Hulu gets them shortly after each episode is aired.
@Alone in a Crowd That is absolutely incorrect. Netflix gets many of their TV shows the day after it airs, just like Hulu. In terms of the SyFy channel content they actually get it about a week before Hulu.
Obviously it would be great if they got all TV show content this way, but you certainly don't have to wait for a DVD release. I watched all of the last season of Heroes that way, it was much better than watching it on Hulu with ads.
@daftrok i'm not going to pay for Hulu unless i can get full access to every season of a show, not just the most recent. next in priority would be expanding the selection. i actually care less about the ads.
@daftrok Wasn't that a bit more than "two questions"?
@daftrok
I went ahead and got Netflix yesterday - hooking my desktop I rarely use to the TV through HDMI. Netflix has enough stuff I watch on there plus it's ad-free and a bit cheaper. Not all the stuff is available for streaming yet, though, but they should get there soon.
Still not worth it for me.
That's what I'm talking about, Sony. I don't know why people don't learn to read before they post or at least do research and let someone else do the reading. I have Netflix. While there is crossover, Netflix does not have the same number of television shows that Hulu+ does. Someone wanting to drop cable couldn't do that with Netflix on its own.
@kylerjai and even with the tv shows that Netflix does have (i use my PS3 for Netflix constantly - and they are adding both new series and new seasons almost daily [i've discovered many GREAT tv series on my PS3 via Netflix - such as Bones, Mythbusters, Survivorman, Man vs Wild, Top Gear, Kidnapped, Prison Break, Whale Wars, Lie to Me, 30 Days, etc...]) tend to expire after a period of availability. it would be great if Netflix could both 1) expand the tv series and season availability, and 2) extend viewability periods/nix "you must watch this show by _____ or we'll make it unavailable".
i'm sure #2 has to do with them paying the media owners for distribution...but perhaps they could pay them more or work out a better deal to combat the Hulu Plus deal.
(i agree with @Critic2029 - $10 here and $10 there DOES start to add up...and while i could see myself spending $10 more ONCE more for another quality media service...that would be about the end of my saturation)
This could be looked at as an "early access" for PS+ members I suppose.....still going to need to be gold for it on 360...
I don't care either way as I still don't see a benefit of Hulu+ while I have a DVR and the knowledge of how to get the same shows via EZTV.it
My interest in this when it was believed PSN+ would be required to use it: 0%
My interest in this now that we know it won't be once it's official: 100%
My words to Sony on this matter: great fucking job.
I'll stick to Hulu-.
@WC066
I'm with you. Hulu+ doesn't offer much over Hulu-, especially Qwest can't seem give me a straight answer on why my Internet is slower than it should be. HD streams aren't possible for me.
However, I fear that Hulu- may be downgraded from where it is today. Expect reduced selection and more ads.
Please confirm that this won't work in Canada :|
@xDRAN0x
Confirmed, I went to the Hulu website and they specifically say it's for US only.
I subscribed anyway just to see, I have my doubts though.
Wish there was something similar in Canada eh?
i just dont understand hulu or even hulu plus... or people that pay for this krap...
you pay for cable to watch nothing on TV in HD. Oh great 50 monthly.. now you will be paying for hulu+ because you missed nothing on TV and you gotta watch your reruns of nothing plus commercials.. oh this is too cool.
or something...
@TheKidD
Exactly how I feel. I watch what I can when not working and if it's not on @ that time, I DVR it or if it's something I don't mind watching over & over.. I buy it off the PNS.. Simple as that! I'm not paying monthly for something I might not use..
@TheKidD What are you slow? It's $10 a month for TV shows and if everything you want is on there you don't have to pay for cable/sat. How hard is it to understand that.
Have you guys ever thought of the people who have net access but not cable?
Have you guys ever thought of the people who have net access but not cable?
What I don't like about Hulu is the 5 episode limit. I don't know if they'll have that on Hulu Plus, but I'd hate to pay for the service and not be able to watch any episode of any season at any given time.
@pintonion Hulu+ doesn't have that limit. I need that to catch up on shows that I missed and want t catch up.
