Looks like we've (almost) solved the mystery of PlayStation 3's FCC-bound
CECH-2501 models. Sony just announced a "classic white"
PS3 Slim (as opposed to the
"ceramic white" original) for Japan, model CECH-2500, coming July 29th with 160GB HDD. For 34,980 yen (about $400 translated to US currency) you can now start off with 320GB of storage in your "charcoal black" model -- not to worry, the aforementioned 160GB still retails for 29,980 yen ($342). So, when are we gonna see this elsewhere in the world, hm?
Update: Post edited to make clear that the new "classic white" model is only available with a 160GB HDD.

250 GB Xbox 360 is cheaper than the 160 GB PS3. I remember when they announced the new Xbox and the Sony fanboys cried that MS kept their new Xbox the same price, even though it increased disc space.
Meanwhile, the same disc space on a PS3 (that they took open source from) is $100 more, and a 120 GB PS3 is $50 more.
@cubs223425 Why do fanboys think they need to bring the 360 into this? This is about PS3 being released in a new color. It's not about the value proposition of various consoles.

It makes almost no difference (from personal experience with a 7200rpm WD scorpio black vs a regular 5400rpm seagate)

Once upon a time I thought black was super high tech looking and I couldn't get enough of it. Then at some point I noticed all these tech products were black -- even the crappy low tech ones. Now white feels high tech and sleek.
It doesn't look half bad in white. It just looks god awful in Black. I love my shiny and chrome 60GB that's for sure. Even if she's got a weight problem.

I agree, the original 60GB PS3 is still the best looking of all of them. The current PS3 in matte black looks like a cheap hunk of plastic. The white version is definitely an improvement.

I kinda wish that Sony kept the extra USBs and card readers on the slim. I own a launch 60g with those features and wouldn't replace it. although I may buy another ps3 for use in a home theater system, then just swap the HDDs. (you can do that, right?)

No, the hard drives are encrytped( has been hacked but only give you root access to basic signatures not any core signatures)
There is a debug firmware which can downgrade it to firmware 1.1 which if you use might allow for hd swapping, not sure yet
@Acrazypenguin YES, you can replace the PS3's HDD with a 2.5' (laptop HDD) I think a 500GB is going for about $80. I'm not sure on the limit but I've heard of people going up to 750GB.
I'm not sure what the guy above me is talking about...I think he is confusing the PS3 with an Xbox.
@RSebire Yeah you can swap your hdd with any sata 150 hdd. You can even slap an SSD it's been proven to not help much with games that draw from the bd-rom which is only a 2x which holds back the SSD but games that run purely off the storage unit load like lightning your music lists on Rock band or gh load like normal vs the 5 minute plus when you have a massive library. But if you don't need that a 7200rpm works great but a 5400rpm os pretty much all you need to play the hardcore disc based games so slap a 1TB drive in and install home at it's 13 GB MAX reserve and download movies and music and not worry about anythinfor a long time. But as for your comment you my friend are the weakest link... Good bye.

Pro-tip, buy the cheapest ps3 you can find, buy a cheap 500gb 2.5" hard disk, marry the two and bingo! Keep your warranty and your wallet happy!
It's what I'm doing with my old ps3 fat rather thann buying a new model.
On a side note, I was thinking if getting a new xbox 360 to go along with my ps3, but if the price point of the new ps3 is relatively low or the same as the current 120gb model in the UK then I may have to opt out since the 360 will seem like even less value for money than it already is.
How many SKUs sony... that's phat with 20\40\60\80\160GB and slim with 120\250\320 GB. Seriously... 8 different SKUs what gives?

iPhone 4 and now PS3...I got to say, it's a welcome change and the PS3 looks good.
I've been in the MS camp since Xbox 1 - it used to be fanboism but now it's just familiarity with the brand. With that said, if I get back into console gaming (my 5th 360 is sitting unused), I may jump for a white PS3.
I love the Snowy White PS3. If it every comes to the U.S. Wish I hopefully it does. I'll be getting this baby.

Does this have just the Dolby HD or is it the newer dts capable chip?
The ports? How many? Are they still usb 2.1 or are we ever going to get usb 3, any card readers. Do these new ones have the 2TB internal limits? Or has that gone.
The psu is how much more efficient now? 20%? Or more? Is the power cable attached permenately now?
Is it N draft wifi?
