Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"I finally got a new laptop with a lone USB 3.0 port. I'm now looking at getting a USB 3.0 hub with a power adapter so I can use both of my USB 3.0 hard drives at faster speeds. I've read lots of horror stories where some hubs either don't come with power adapters -- and as a consequence the portable drives don't work with them properly -- or they are designed poorly which results in USB 2.0 speeds. Or, the hard drives keep getting disconnected. Do your readers have any suggestions or experience using USB 3.0 hubs? Thanks!"
gonna send an email to steve jobs, see if he's gonna try it too :)
@Wiggy Fuzz he probably will die if he hears this news... or maybe just crap his pants because no ONE i mean NO ONE can prove him wrong....
IMPORTANT NOTE! change the original password! if you have never SSH'd your iDevice the password is set to alpine and it makes hacking into your device though WiFi amazingly easy.
@Wiggy Fuzz
Haha..that would be funny. He would probably publish a Flash is not good part 2.
I thought you guys didnt NEED/WANT flash?
@Ziv Or don't if you want Rick Astley to pay a visit.
@tu eres estupido
No, he's too busy telling people that they're holding the new iPhone wrong.
@Wiggy Fuzz magical
@Wiggy Fuzz
"Relax, it won't work for long. We are going to change everything. Again."
- Steve
@Seven2k
I don't (want/need Flash). Some people do. Best of both worlds, no?
If you want porn, you can switch to Android. If you want flash, you can switch to Android too. Switch to Android, if you want freedom.
- Steve Jobs.
@Canucker
Yeah...i guess most people do need flash, now that they sat down and played with ipad for awhile now they realize they do need it. Jailbreak away y'all. Pretty sure Apple will come out with a BS statement to scare people from doing this just like they did with the iPhone.
@Seven2k We don't need Flash. As interesting as it would be to see it running on my iPad, I can't think of an actual use for it.
@Wiggy Fuzz
you actually should send an email to the makers of adblock plus, because anyone surfing their iPad with flash will need something to block those annoying ads...
@who said what
"And you're gonna love it"
-Steve
@grahamj
Thanks for speaking for everyone. I'm sure everyone proxied their opinion and position to you.
@Wiggy Fuzz
I seriously hope this sticks around for a while. People are going way out of their way to enable this. Why Apple would think this is ruining their "experience" is beyond me. Leave these poor Flash wanting people be.
@Wiggy Fuzz
Also will this hack do stand alone swf's? Fullscreen? Now that will be sweet.
@Canucker The best of both worlds? How about putting Flash in the app store, and letting users decide. I don't know why some folks are so willing to let Steve-O decide things for them.

@Wiggy Fuzz
This is win-win for Jobs. Put more iPads out of warranty for Apple to support. And Apple can innovate with their own version of Flash by "leveraging" the open source effort.
@tikigawd
No problem. If you disagree, perhaps you can point out an actual iPad owner that has mentioned finding some use for this. The thousands of games already available for iPad are already keeping owners entertained and I think you'll be hard pressed to find many agonizing over the lack of punch-the-monkey ads.
Now that Adobe has, years later, finally gotten around to releasing something that runs on a mobile device I think we're going to see that few are finding much use for it outside of video which is slowly being replaced by HTML5-supported codecs anyway (and will continue to be despite whatever level of ubiquity mobile Flash eventually enjoys)
@tikigawd
PS
I guess Steve proxies through you, right? ;)
@Wiggy Fuzz
Ohhhh... so yall WANT Flash, but Apple says eff that?! But also claims that they want an "open web". Hmmmmmmmm *cough*BULLSHYT*cough*
@Wiggy Fuzz
I'm with Graham, I came from windows apprehensively to my iPad, haven't looked back. While this is sweet for the kids who play flash games, I'm only excited for it as a proof of concept until flash videos run.
And I mean the hulu app will allow normal viewing of hulu, hulu plus is for access to older shit, but I don't use July anyway so its s moot point for me, just wanted to point that out to all the people who don't own an ipad bitching FOR us about then ten dollars a month lol.
Can this baby run Hulu?
If it does I buy 1
Someone please load up the Fail Whale for Apple. Something they didn't want running on their device, actually runs on their device!! The irony is hilarious, lol.
Also, notice how it's not Flash running constantly! It's Flash on Demand! So Flash doesn't start running as soon as a page loads up, you have to tap to activate it, which is great and should kill performance as many had thought. I think it's time Flash got put into the app store, don't have it pre-installed but give people the choice is what I say.
Paying attention Stevie-boy?
@grahamj
Actual iPad owner here who has a use for this. First, I'd really like to watch Hulu on it without paying $10 a month. And second, I'd like to watch videos for a course I'm taking that are only available in flash.
Beyond that, there are some websites I frequent with flash components, and I come across at least a couple on a daily basis which require flash either for navigation or for accessing content. Currently I handle this situation by carrying around a netbook, which seems silly; the iPad has actually made me less mobile.
@Plazmic Flame
Correction: *shouldn't kill performance as many had thought
@grahamj how about all the websites that require flash?
@Missing Matter
Since this doesn't handle video I'll just keep you lumped in with the owners who have no use for it.
Anyone else?
@grahamj just wondering, what flavor was your kool-aid?
@who said what
And its something "revolutionary"...
@grahamj your an idiot if you see no use for flash, how can you count him out because he said for video when you asked if anyone had a use for flash in general. You just hate being wrong eh?
@grahamj
You mean YOU don't need Flash right? Speak for yourself!!!!
@grahamj
• 85% of the top 100 websites use Flash Player (Alexa)
• 75% of web video is viewed using Flash Player (Comscore)
• 98% of enterprises rely on Flash Player (Forrester)
• 70% of web games are delivered using Flash Player (Evans Data Corp.)
• 3.5 million developers use the Flash Platform
• 19 of the top 20 device manufacturers worldwide have committed to shipping Flash technology on their devices (Apple is the missing device mfr.)
Android will embrace Flash and its 2.5 million developers, Apple will not. We shall see who made the right choice.
@grahamj
I meant I have an actual use for Flash, not this particular hack. Although I do enjoy homestar. Obviously the next step for this is to enable video playback. I'll be the first one in line to have this on my iPad.
@Missing Matter
Why don't you sell it and keep your netbook then? Not to sound hostile, but it makes no sense to carry both around anyway, so why not just keep the netbook?
Anyway, this is a moot point, as this plugin doesn't plsynflash videos.
The rest of you can quote your stats all you want, I was on that side of the fence merely months ago, yet I haven't run into many issues requiring flash that I need to hop on my computer for. Besides streaming tv to my tv at home, flash is worthless.
I'm sure there are niche categories of users and developers that will require this, but for the majority of users, advanced or not, you can do fine without flash. As it stands, playing flash games probably isn't too high on most iPad owners lists, most people still playing flash games aren't outbthere buying ipads, they are a younger demographic that couldn't afford one even if they wanted one, which most likely don't.n
But yea, well see who won this "war" once a device actually ships with 10.1 stock.
@Hyakku
"Why don't you sell it and keep your netbook then?"
I shouldn't have to. You're right, it makes no sense to carry both around, but that's the only way I can get the full feature set I need. I develop for the iPad and I need to take it with me places, so it would be nice if it could do everything my netbook can.
I prefer the form factor, the weight, and the battery life of the iPad over the netbook. But I hate the lack of flash and multitasking (looking forward to iOS 4).
Fact is, this Flash is something I need on the internet as it exists today. Maybe in the future that will change, but right now I feel crippled while browsing on my iPad.
@Missing Matter
So basically you got your iPad to be a netbook/laptop replacement and your disappointed it's not? Do you even have an iPad?
Regardless, I don't see how flash would help you develop better or experience the web better, but now you have the ability to do both. Go jailbreak, install flash, and get backgrounder. Simple, and now you should have " full web access.", whatever that means. And don't dare try ton tell me that jailbreaking shouldn't be necessary when you're willing to carry two devices around so you can use flash and multitask instead of just pushing the jailbreak button.
I suspect you don't really own an ipad though, and there will be another reason whybthis isn't feasible and apple is so horrible.
@tu eres estupido
The problem is that in steves eyes he is still right.
He would argue the quality and battery life... Just the fact it doesn't play video vindicates his point.
Of course had they let adobe do this it would certainly work well, which is the point of this demo...
But again Steve jobs is arguing the details, not that it can't be done, but it can't be done to HIS STANDARDS.
@grahamj
I own an iPad and I'd like Flash support. I'm tired of periodically running into sites that present me with a blank page or being forced to run their stripped down mobile versions even though the iPad is big enough to view the full pages. And while this doesn't support video yet, it would certainly be nice to not constantly run into videos I can't play.
@Hyakku
"So basically you got your iPad to be a netbook/laptop replacement and your disappointed it's not?"
No, I bought the iPad to develop on, but I wish it would replace my netbook. I can do everything on my iPad I would want to do on my netbook except flash. I don't see why I shouldn't be able to access any website on a device made specifically for the internet.
"And don't dare try ton tell me that jailbreaking shouldn't be necessary when you're willing to carry two devices around so you can use flash and multitask instead of just pushing the jailbreak button.
I suspect you don't really own an ipad though, and there will be another reason whybthis isn't feasible and apple is so horrible."
Straw man much? I never made any of those claims and I am an iPad owner. I'm sorry to tell you this but not all Apple customers are assimilated under the Steve Jobs vision.
I don't see why having this option is so offensive to so many people.
@Missing Matter
Oh, and I forgot to mention, yes I do use backgrounder, but that doesn't change the fact that I hated the lack of multitasking and was forced to install it. Major flaw with the device as it currently exists, IMO. Also, battery life with backgrounder hasn't been a problem for me.
@Missing Matter
You said a use "for this" - since it doesn't handle video and the uses you mentioned require it, I'm not sure I see how you have a use for this.
I agree that many sites still use Flash for video but as I've repeatedly pointed out, there are not a lot of other uses. Yes, crappy games and banners but what else? Anything actually useful, the odd UI piece that a lazy dev didn't bother coding backwards compatibility for? Didn't think so.
So again, has anyone here actually installed it?
@patp, I have already given props to those involved with this, it is indeed a nice piece of work. However, just because something is technologically impressive doesn't mean the vast majority of users will have any use for it.
And indeed, according to another Engadget article just posted, Flash on Android actually slows down the browser so unless you consider your browser too fast I'll maintain that mobile Flash has limited utility.
@grahamj
You're a chump, just like Drago.
@Missing Matter
What ? Why would you need an ipad to develop on but be disappointed at its lack of flash as if you didn't know? To develop for the iPad you don't need to own one either, although it would certainly help, but who would buy a device they didn't want if they didn't need to?
I don't find this offensive at all, on the contrary I'm encouraging you to use it, what's annoying is how people are like "oh my god apple see, all ioad owners want flash" when most of them don't own an iPad, and that's obviously not true, or it wouldn't consistently be selling out.
The people who don't own or want an ipad, bitch about it having flash, then it gets flash and they try to throw it in our face as if there has been some rampant rallying across the Internet demanding flash for the iPad.
Give me a full divx player besides vlc or yx for the iPad if this thing can't stream video, I'll be facetious here but I'm sorry, flash games are for twelve year olds.
@trek
No he's busy running the most successful tech company in the world right now. Yeah, the same company that was practically bankrupt when he took over...where every major decision was mocked and derided by the so called industry pundits and nerds. I am sure Steve doesn't need to worry about those roadkill in his rear view mirror.
I guess if you make the accusation that the iphone can't make calls unless you hold it a particular way it is supposed to be true. from what I can tell the people who have the most problem with Apple products are people who don't own or ever intend to own apple products. The so called Google-Doodle club that's out in force on these sites...
@Wiggy Fuzz He most likely won't. What he will do is send out an OTA update that makes it so people running Frash have a very bad battery life while thinking of ways to kill adobe.
@grahamj
I can agree mobile flash has limited utility, however it just seems that todays web content is by and large delivered via flash plugin. I'm not gonna say that "lazy devs" use flash, because coding for flash is a respectable feat in itself.
Apple vowing to not support flash in it's mobile browser seems to a bit of backward thinking in a rapidly forward thinking medium.. My thinking, as Steve's is (so he says) is delivering the best product for consumers. If so much of the web relies on flash for content delivery,why no offer the option to install flash as an app? I see no reason not to give your consumers that option. Of course you can say (as he has) that flash would be a resource hog, but what app wouldn't be? My battery on my ipod drains faster than anything when I play my sonic the hedgehog.
@Hyakku
"What ? Why would you need an ipad to develop on but be disappointed at its lack of flash as if you didn't know? To develop for the iPad you don't need to own one either, although it would certainly help, but who would buy a device they didn't want if they didn't need to?"
You can only get so far developing with the simulator. There are various idiosyncrasies between the device and the simulator, not to mention the multitiouch capabilities of the simulator are very basic. Furthermore, in order to properly evaluate app performance, you need it on the device. There's really no two ways about it.
Anyway, I never said I was surprised by the lack of flash and I never said I didn't want the iPad. I merely am stating that after owning and using the device for a period of time I have found it insufficient to fill my needs. One of these deficiencies is solved with backgrounder, and hopefully the other will be solved by Frash, and I will have nothing more to complain about.
