Samsung Intercept is up for pre-order, might launch this weekend
Sure, the Epic 4G seems awesome -- but that doesn't mean Sprint can (or should) abandon the midrange Android market, right? On that note, the previously-leaked Samsung Intercept is now up for pre-order on Sprint's so-called EVP site for business discount customers where it's selling for $99.99 on a two-year contract after rebate (though we imagine regular customers coming into corporate retail stores might have to pay more than that). Feature-wise, you're looking at a 3.2 megapixel cam with some sort of video capture, slide-out QWERTY keyboard (this is likely a Moment successor, after all), and your choice of Gray Steel or Satin Pink finishes. Word is that we might see an official launch this weekend -- just don't mistake it for an Epic when you see it in the store, alright?
[Thanks, anonymous tipster]
Update: Best Buy accidentally sold one for $100 already, so it's possible this is going to be the asking price for everyone -- and considering the specs, it really shouldn't go for a penny more. Thanks, A Mathur!

Meh, not bad, but the specs seems a little behind at this point, even for a "mid-range". Not to mention pink.. ug....
@Madcat
theres silver to!
@Madcat 800x480 screen. That's pretty nice. It's midrange. The 800mhz processor is probably good enough for the low-mid buyer. Plus, I don't think this will have a UI-skin, which should leave it relatively quick.
I'm grabbing one for the wife, but only question I have is, will it see 2.2?
@dougdeep
I can give you that on the screen, and assuming the CPU isn't actually half bad (sure, 800mhz, but what actual core?), i guess it qualifies. Still though, on 2 year contract, I think it would be better priced at $50-75..
@dougdeep so your saying my droid is no mid range? it has a 550 mhz cpu, 800x480 (as do all androids at this point) and no ui skin.
although since i am a root user, and use adb, i have my own custom framework res, its pretty sweet. and i run 1.2 ghz
@huskie fluff I'm not sure what you're trying to say. The market puts 1ghz as high-end today. Sprint doesn't sell Droid branded phones. While the Hero was high-end two years ago, 538mhz can not be considered high-end today.
@dougdeep true true, id like a faster processor anyway (not that im complainng about 550, runs launcherpro pretty darn smooth)
Still waiting for epic
According to Android Central, there was already a leaked one sold a bit too early at a Best Buy. According to reviewer, we should see this on July 11th.

When you consider the total cost of ownership of purchasing and using a smartphone it seems ridiculous that someone would save $99 to buy one of these pieces of garbage.
$80 / month * 24 = 2020 + $99 for poop phone = $2119
$80 / month * 24 = 2020 + $199 for awesome phone = $2219
Why would you buy anything less than top of the line to save 5% on your total cost for owning and using these devices? Even a free phone doesn't seem worth it, even if it does lower the barrier of entry.
@thinkthis Your math is off. EPIC/EVO is $80 / month. This phone is $70 / month.
That makes this phone $340 cheaper over the contract.
@dougdeep I think people will buy lower end phones to avoid the $10 "4G" fee.
@thinkthis My thoughts exactly. even if the dougdeep is right. I don't get it, but then again I'm a gainfully employed dink.
@thinkthis
Theres the extra $10 month for a 4G plan which to a lot of people is a little too much, especially when 4G isn't in your area yet. Not to mention the initial $100 savings or so over the Epic of Evo 4G is nice.
I'm trying to get my mom to get a new phone she can use her business e-mail and such now(she's using a Samsung Instint right now, which is AWFUL for everything she does considering it doesn't support exchange and just about everything on it is just...bad) but she refuses to pay that extra $10 a month for a 4G plan. Going to show her this, because the only other phone she's considering is the Palm pre(which is what I have). I love my Pre but if I could go back 8 months I would have waited for a good Android phone to come to sprint
@thinkthis
What concerns me the most is the "POS Price". Is Samsung being too honest here?
My company has a discount with Sprint. The Intercept is nowhere to be found on the Sprint "private store" site that our HR dept provides.
The screenshot above mentions Walmart price on the phone. You sure this isn't a Walmart pre-order page?
So the "POS price" means you get a shittier phone for more money?
So... when is the Epic coming out? Patiently waiting...
What is the size of the screen? it looks like a pretty good phone but I'm on verizon.
Another damn ugly phone. :(
I love the performance of the Epic 4G hummingbird and the screen, but the phone is so ugly compared to the EVO 4G.
My friend got the pink one and she loves it already.
