Ubuntu joins Android on Nexus One, apocalyptic repercussions nowhere to be found
Ever wondered what would happen if you threw another mobile OS onto your Nexus One? Without removing Android? Contrary to popular belief, the world will in fact not end, and in many cases, lives could very well be improved. One particular modder over at Nexus One Hacks has managed to put together a video how-to demonstrating the installation of Ubuntu as a secondary OS on his rooted N1, and while you'll obviously find yourself dealing with a few incompatibilities should you follow suit, it's not like you really have anything better to do tonight than tinker. Right? Right. Jump on past the break and mash play to get going.

Ubuntu is a mobile OS?
Why would anyone want to replace the great Android OS? How about a how to for iPhones. Since the iphone sucks
@beast101 Trolling trolling trolling
BACKSTREET
Trolling trolling trolling.
@beast101 Did you hear that? I can hear the downrank stampede from miles away.
@maattp
I would love to have this on my iPhone, it would be so cool!
Obviously nothing would work, but it would be interesting to check out and explore
@maattp No it isn't.
@maattp
Well it is not technically a "mobile phone OS", but I guess it's light enough to run smoothly on any recent phone..
@beast101
How about tasting a bit of oblivion ?
@beast101
Android??? Shit, never in a million years. Reminds me of Windows Vista. Shitty UI, malware and eternal app updates and bad programming.
iPhone, now THATs an esthetic peace of equip, through and through.
And please spare me the antenna shit... It's getting old fast
@misjah
Your antenna still doesn't work, though.
Anyway.
NEVER GONNA TROLL YOU UP.
Also: 'esthetic'
@misjah
OMG you just downrank one, and another troll comes out already..
they're respawing too fast.. damn this game is hard..
@jayjaync Don't worry! This game has co-op!
@maattp
I was honestly just wondering whether there was a specific mobile version of Ubuntu. Automatic assumtions of "trolling" just make you look like a troll.
@maattp Wut.
We're fighting against the trolls in your thread, bro.
@maattp
nobody accused YOU of trolling.
And no, there's no mobile specific version of Ubuntu.
There's been rumours a few week backs, but apparently it wasn't true.
So the one running on the Nexus One here, is the same desktop version than you can download yourself (I think).
@maattp
My mistake... Sorry.. I forgot. Only negative Iphone comments are tolerated in this crowd.
Maybe I should forget all about taste and get myself a job administrating some Linux based system and hide away in a cellar with my new EVO. Download some warez and watch some porn.
C'mon guys... It wasn't a troll... I just don't like Android ok?
@gnargle Why would anyone want to replace the great Android OS? How about a how to for iPhones. Since the iphone sucks
Rank this one down too. And when your done, Ill repost.
@misjah No.
I dislike fanboys of any kind. That's why I downranked the shit out of both you and the guy who doesn't like iOS. Idiots like you who can't appreciate what other people like are the bane of websites like this.
@beast101 Fine. This is now a war of attrition.
I'll warn you.bI'm waiting for the Engi update. I can go all night.
@beast101 @misjah
This post could have been about Ubuntu on mobile phones, if it runs smoothly or not,
Then we could have talked about a possible Ubuntu Mobile version,
Then we could have talked about what kind of stuff does/doesn't work with Ubuntu on the Nexus One.
But no, somebody has to say "Iphone sucks", "Android sucks"..
@misjah
If you just don't like it, then what about just saying "I don't like it".
And talking about the antenna, then asking not to troll about it is a troll..
meh..
@gnargle
Fair enough... But I think you may well be the only one doing that. I'm getting tired of people dissing the iPhone on this forum. But that seems to be ok by everyone. Anything negative about androind and you are a troll and get immediately downgraded to oblivion.
@misjah No.
I have an iPod Touch. I love it. What I don't love is people hating on other people's choices. Which is what you were doing. Which is why you were branded a troll.
@gnargle
Y
Never mind dude... I know why!! But that not the problem here is it. Read my reply to you again
I think we need a bash.org-like website for Engadget comments ^^
@misjah Sentence fail.
@misjah Get over it, it's a phone.
@gnargle Why would anyone want to replace the great Android OS? How about a how to for iPhones. Since the iphone sucks
@maattp
Put this on a Dell Streak and it will be awesome, screen size is peeeerrrfect!
@misjah I'd be a bit fussy if my phone couldn't make phones calls too. It'll be alright, only 11.5 more months until the iPhone 5!
@maattp
Of course it's a mobile OS. Just like Windows 7.
@misjah
The reason is usually because for some reason, iPhone fanboys are usually more agressive in their comments thus prone to be banned. Just read your own comment above:

Or this one:

Maybe I should forget all about taste and get myself a job administrating some Linux based system and hide away in a cellar with my new EVO. Download some warez and watch some porn.
------------------------------------
On the first one you just came in shouting and insulting a platform. If you don't like it that's ok. I don't like the iPhone (antennae being a large reason) but I still respect the work on many developers which worked hard to bring a nice equipment and dont go insulting their work.
In the second post you just insult a large portion of the readers on this site. Any post on this level will be downraked and I will do that no matter the user preferences. Insulting = bad.
On the other hand look this post where you kept think on a better level:
------------------------------------
Fair enough... But I think you may well be the only one doing that. I'm getting tired of people dissing the iPhone on this forum. But that seems to be ok by everyone. Anything negative about androind and you are a troll and get immediately downgraded to oblivion.
-----------------------------------
You were not downraked now. Just because you were being polite. In fact you can say negative many things being polite and you wont be downranked.
I hope you get the idea.
Luck!
Guimo
@Guimo
Let me try again.... I fully understand WHY was sent into oblivion (I was rude and maybe deserved it)... how ever this is NOT my point. My point is: WHY does it seem to be OK (on this forum) to bash the Iphone (and often in a RUDE fashion) and not Android ?
Android is full of things not to like, but still it seems to be "illegal" to bash THAT? How come?
@iucidium
Maybe my english sucks... but remember that quite a few people on this forum does not have English as their native tongue. Me included.
@Guimo
I took the time to do some research on different posts on several articles in here (I'm relatively new here) and you guys are actually quite cool and seem to have a very good self-justice when it comes to bashing (no matter which device).
I read quite a few posts on several forums, and it seems I have gotten things mixed up.
I apologize for my posts, they were rude and out of line.
@angelusp I really do hope they can do something of this sort for my iPhone 3GS. I like ios4 but I'm getting bored with the interface. I want to try out android or ubuntu on my phone without having to buy a new one
@the bandit Or he just likes high level english :)
Even though I thought of batman too before I thought about english :D
@maattp : Am I the only one who LOVES seeing 'this comment was downranked into oblivion' and then seeing what the comment was, seeing a witty or non-witty response, the latter being downranked like the first which I find hilarious?
Pure awesomeness!
@sspirate
This is pretty cool indeed! It would be neat to run some command line apps or even a server on the phone! While the GUI would likely be painfully slow, the command line would certainly be fast enough for most CLI tasks. With an external keyboard (android BT support?), this would make one helluva portable netbook for CLI geeks, with great battery life (red mode) and a tiny footprint.
Time to get my nMappin on...
Shit that is geeky. And what an ugly phone!
@misjah Apple fanboy detected!
@misjah
It's got a bumper on. Without out (and with it), it's still a million times better (and sexier) than a iPhone4.
@Zoidbot2010
still ugly
@misjah Super cool comment bro.
@misjah
If that isn't cool to you, WTF are you doing on this site??
We are all geeks.
@SolidSnake Amen.
@Zoidbot2010
LOL yeah right.
@misjah Oh goodies! Love the down rank button they should make it better and add the word FAIL in raid to it.
@Zoidbot2010
ROFL! ..Right :o)
Is that a bumper? Lol.
@KarlW
Looks like one -- difference is, he can take it off and keep a phone call going ;-)
