PlayStation Blu-ray 3D update arrives in September; 3D photo, PlayTV and YouTube support to follow
Just in case you weren't really sure how deep into this 3DTV thing Sony is, senior director of Sony Europe Mick Hocking announced the PS3's update for Blu-ray 3D movie playback will be released in September -- but it won't stop there. Expect future firmware upgrades that give the PS3 3D rendering for photos (.mpo files), any broadcasts it can pick up on PlayTV, and even YouTube videos. Not running out the door to buy one yet? CVG reports the rest of the presentation was devoted to extolling the virtues of 3D to hardcore gamers in racing games, God of War, or LittleBigPlanet. Demos so far haven't completely convinced us the PS3 is capable of rendering games in high enough resolution to satisfy, but if Fat Princess 2 features a good 3D implementation, someone hide our credit cards, please.

wow I see the 3D on a regular LCD monitor.. lol...
I think 3D is a joke.
It basically exists so that prices of HDTVs go down.
Thats how I look at it.
@uckApple
I agree with ya. Don't see the point still not that great. "They" need to do 360 immersion.
Got a question what kind of effect would this have on ones eyes? Brain? Likeliness for seizures?
Also I haven't been really amazed by 3D movies or even IMAX. When I go the screen is so big I can't see what's happening. When I watch in on my LCD TV at home (32") I enjoy it more. Just my dos centavos
@tjrchka
In regards to your question about damaging your eyes or brain, I talked to my eye doctor about this and she said that 3D is actually good for your eyes. She said that it makes you workout your eyes more since your brain is telling them to converge and work together more which ultimately makes for stronger eye operation. There's even cases of improved vision from 3D.
@Chibi Chaingun
Nice. I wonder if 3D can get the fitness stamp of approval like the Wii did?
You'll all change your mind once they invent 3d porn.
@uclatommy They already have
@uckApple which is good for the hold outs. But the early adopters will be saying to their PS3 3D games:
A:Wow, these graphics ARE better than real life! I wave to the person and they wave back!
B:Dude, there's no camera attached to your PS3...
A O.o
@uckApple
I expect the 3D refresh spec will eventually just become part of an HD TV's spec without you actually going and getting it specifically.
But for the next couple of years the idea is very silly IMHO.
Given the choice of dropping $2000 on a 2D 50"+ HD TV or a 40" 3D HD TV what do you honestly imagine the mass-market is going to go for?
Once people realise that there's almost no content (and what content there is does not look like Avatar at the cinema) then I can only see this as exciting the gaming crowd (and PCs have had 3D for a while and it hasn't exactly revived PC gaming much).
The truth is it's irrelevant to good story telling & in some ways intrusive and distracting.....you just know Hollywood is going to (over)use it as an 'effect'.
At heart I think this is dragging out the last profits from the old LCD/Plasma tech & infrastructure.
We'll be getting some form of OLED soon and the whole supposedly essential feature adding nonsense will start again.
I for one welcome our 3D overlords...
...umm ...they are giving out free 3DTVs right?
Now the only thing I need is a $3000 3D HTDV.
@Trickymaster Here, let me save you a grand.
@Trickymaster
*$7,000
There, Fixd.
@uckApple I only paid $2000 for my Samsung. It's all in where you look.
@Trickymaster For $3000 you can get a Sony pack right now that has a 3d Reciver, 5.1 Surround with free movies and games and two pairs of glasses.

@Trickymaster
For $3000 you could get a much much bigger 2D HD TV.
(and only 2 pairs of specs? What about the rest of the family - and any friends that drop by?)
People stop the through the glasses shot! It doesn't help us see the 3D any better.
Thanks for holding the glasses up. So cool to see it in 3D rather than look at blurry images all the time.
As I say in every time I see one of these posts, until it's a hologram it's not 3D.
Finally!I can make use of my shiny new p65vt25.Playing the 3d game demos fun and all but i'd really like to watch Coraline and ice age 3d.
@zen2k Coraline's 3D isn't very good, actually. I have the Blu-Ray that comes with the 3D version, and anaglyph or not, they didn't do it right. The little rig they made that they're oh so proud of doesn't do one super important thing - pivot. So while the 3D frames may be shifted over properly, they're not focused. They messed it up, basically. anything else would be better.
Sony seems to really like the motto "Go big or go home."
Just in case your eye sight isn't screwed up after all those video games... Playstation has made it even easier to screw your eye sight up!
@seesaw12 Don't be ignorant. The worst that could happen is you may get a headache or feel dizzy (similar to motion sickness). There are actually studies that indicate watching images in 3D may be good for your eyes.
@TechWhiz954 ignorant? I probably play more video games than you and I can assure you, video games play a huge role in screwing up eye sight.
Just like staring at a computer all day does too.
I see Sony combining the 3D with the PS Move so that you have a truly immersive experience. Imagine playing Star Wars in 3D with the PS Move.
PS3 can do everything!
@Shlooky
Except browse the internet correctly
@uckApple At least it can browse the internet. I fail to see why Microsoft hasn't added that through a firmware update.
@tenacioustoaster It's because everyone would wonder why 360 doesn't have mouse & keyboard, and then everyone would question msft's tyrannical stance against m&k for games.
@Lordstrom uhh, Games for Windows?!
@Shlooky Hmmm.. can it do OtherOS? I think not!
@Shlooky
Except play ps2 games
@Shlooky except HDMI 1.4
I got to check out a Panasonic 3D TV for the first time at Costco the other day. WAY WAY overhyped!!! The 3D glasses dim the display by about 50% and the 3D movie looks fake and 'computer generated' like.
Stop giving us crap the majority of consumers don't want and give us the stuff we do want!! Seriously. You can do this shit later when an extra few percent of people actually care. =_=
The only thing I'm jealous of (being a 360 owner) in that update is the blu ray player. That's it. I even have a stand alone blu ray player but I wish my 360 could play them.
"Don't Care, Don't Care," Stan Marsh.
bullshit, i want my otheros back instead of wasting more money on these "NEW" things.
do they have a solution for ppl using real glasses? - how are we gonna use those 3D goggles :d?
@MikkelWiskerchen You put them over your glasses. It works just fine.
@RichardLawler Okay. And that does not interfere the 3D experience? I just think of 3D glasses in cinemas here in DK, they are just awful
@MikkelWiskerchen when they are used over your glasses that is^^
sony seems to be focusing on all the wrong things for ps3. they should be working to fix that damn tedious xmb, network presence and a better way to port/dev games so they aren't just running on two cells when not native. the 360 is leaps and bounds above the ps3 when it comes to social interactivity/multiplayer imo.
@system22
amen to that. it took them long enough just to keep up with trophies/avatars like xbox. Its doing everything they do only later. Plus the network and store has been really lagging a lot.
I don't think I'll be buying into this 3D stuff until they manage to do it without the glasses.
Also, with 3D games, allow me to physically turn my head left/right/up/down and the viewpoint in-game looks that way too. Especially good for FPSs!
@Alex R you would have to have a helmet or a screen bolted to your skull for that head pivot thing to work.
@travis8214
Give it a few years.
If it happens and I'm still around in the year 2500, I'll PayPal you £500.
Youtube support. What about XVideos support.. Tee heeeee
@1mc
and mkv support!!!
