PlayStation Blu-ray 3D update arrives in September; 3D photo, PlayTV and YouTube support to follow
Just in case you weren't really sure how deep into this 3DTV thing Sony is, senior director of Sony Europe Mick Hocking announced the PS3's update for Blu-ray 3D movie playback will be released in September -- but it won't stop there. Expect future firmware upgrades that give the PS3 3D rendering for photos (.mpo files), any broadcasts it can pick up on PlayTV, and even YouTube videos. Not running out the door to buy one yet? CVG reports the rest of the presentation was devoted to extolling the virtues of 3D to hardcore gamers in racing games, God of War, or LittleBigPlanet. Demos so far haven't completely convinced us the PS3 is capable of rendering games in high enough resolution to satisfy, but if Fat Princess 2 features a good 3D implementation, someone hide our credit cards, please.

I am sick of 3D. It only works well in imax, and the gimmick is getting tiring. Wake me up when the 3D doesn't need glasses.
I like the novelty of 3D, it's pretty much the next step after making every possible screen 1080p. Sony's pretty smart to see this is where the industry is going, like it or not. As soon as we don't need glasses for it, I'm in.
sure now just pay at least $1200 for a new tv plus $250 for every set of glasses you get. oh and blu rays will all be $5-10 more expensive and nearly sell for sticker value ($40) even on amazon..... riiiiight...
No thanks i just upgraded both my tvs to regular 1080p and paying extra for ps3 games and blu ray is enough for me.
After checking out 3D at the home with the World Cup especially and with 3D animated films (Toy Story 3 won me over), I see how 3D is actually making a more immersed experience. It can be used subtly to add depth to a scene. All in all it seems to be working out much better. Sony is making the next logical step by making the PS3 compatible with 3D Blu Ray, which is a great feat for them as it makes that console have even more value than it already did, putting it technologically leaps and bounds ahead of its competition.
When it comes to gaming in 3D, I remember a few years ago when NVIDIA 3D Vision came out and it was so awesome to play Left 4 Dead in 3D and have a smoker's tongue come out at your face. It was genuinely a wonderful experience and to see the PS3 also follow along this path with console gaming is a wonderful sight.
That's Awesome seeing how i have a 3d plasma i love this!
but i would like to see this! 3D XMB! SO PHOTOS ANY MOVIES AND GAMES AND INTERNET BROWSER 3D VIDEO CHAT ETC. COME ON DONT TELL ME IT CANT BE DONE! PLUS WITH THE MOVE YOU COULD DO ALOT! sorry for the caps just wanted that to stand out!
How does this work with the hdmi 1.4 standard? Does this mean our "old" 1.3 receivers are only missing a firmware update to make them 3d compatible?
@txphisher it's not the same, and the PS3 doesn't need to support every part of the HDMI 1.4 standard, it only support certain features.
Shoot, my girlfriend just brought me a PS3 for our anniversay, maybe I can convince her to buy me a 3D tv for it next!
Can they also add the ability to record gameplay in HD without the need of an external recording device? That would make me use the video editor more often. I don't care about 3D right now, I just want to record!
nice shot.

Seriously people, stop complaining you need a new tv. You needed a new tv for 1080p, just upgrade when it's time to. My tv conveniently broke 3 weeks ago and I got a panasonic 3DTV for $300 less than a 3" smaller Sony 2D tv. Super stardust HD is amazing in 3D
Fan of 3D here.
I just hope Geohotz gets his finger out with this release so we can keep the original features.
I don't care for any of those features, I just want my OtherOS back you stupid morons at Sony... Since I've got my PS3 (27 dec 2008) there hasn't been an update that I think, great finally something that adds something to my PS3 since I bought it, but Nooo it really is the other way around, first they remove the much beloved classic theme (and no the current 'classic' theme isn't the same as the original, especially in colors when it comes to night and day), second and that's ofcourse the biggest, the removal of OtherOS, which was one of the actual reasons why I bought the PS3 in the first place (next to the bluray player, and as a plus it could play PS1 & PS3 games).
As a mediacenter it is also pethatic compared to any $60 mediacenter, it doesn't even do MKV's and misses a lot of codecs.. My old computer has to do so much transcoding it just isn't funny anymore..
Given how the old school Sega 3D glasses worked, I'm stunned no one has sought to implement the tech to current systems. All the 3d tech out there right now using LCD shutter technology is based off of the same tech Sega used all those years ago. If I could see a perfectly fine 3d image on my old broke piece of crap standard def Funai TV, then it can work on my Panasonic S1.
The problem lies in the glasses and tv itself. The tv generates an IR code that synchs with the glasses and provides the 3d effect by blanking each eye allowing each eye to see the image, However, currently only the tvs themselves are "3d compatible or ready" Any device needs to be able to output/process/display the 3d imaging. You'd need a device capable of controlling part of, or the entire 3d image capabilities, of which the PS3 is more or less the only non PC that would be able to handle a timing sequence or signal emittance to work with the glasses.
Most likely a dongle can be released by Sony for the PS3 that plugs into a usb port or something that emits the timing code for the wireless glasses to work (obviously sony) and we can get 3d with the PS3. Sure it will only work for games and Blurays, but aren't movies and games the main focus for this tech? Come on Sony! Do this! You'll still make money off of gamers!
Glad I only paid $1349 for my 73" 1080p 3D Mitsubishi HDTV. 3D kit for $399 to convert all the different 3D types to the checkerboard format that mine supports, but still under $2k and its huge.
