What is this tiny Apple touchscreen that just leaked in Taiwan?
Okay, we have no idea what's going on here, but Taiwanese site Apple.pro has just posted up some shots of appears to be a tiny Apple-labeled touchscreen panel -- it measures just 3cm (1.18 inches) square. Given the site's track record with previous Apple component leaks like the white iPhone 4 and the unibody MacBook Pro enclosure, we're somewhat inclined to believe this is real, but we have no idea what it's for -- a new iPod nano? The next-gen Apple TV's remote control? Steve Jobs's dream watch? -- but we're definitely interested in finding out. One more pic showing the Apple label on the ribbon cable after the break.

I am betting Shuffle. I can't believe it would be a watch but then again its perfect for one. Wow. It could be I can somewhat see that. But I think it is most likely an Apple TV remote
It's an iPad mini for those light days
its a pokemon
the magic track pad?
Keyboard LCD?
For such a large and supposedly professional company, Apple has an awfully hard time keeping prototypes from leaking. Sounds to me like someone is "accidentally" forgetting to make sure no one takes the prototypes home to play with them... Hm...
Some say iPod shuffle, and then other try to argue, it wouldnt be a shuffler.
Well it could very well be... you couldnt really control a device with such a small touchscreen. Geastures, perhaps, and mode switching... and that about accounts for exactly the amount of control you need for a shuffle device. Plus the added bonus of being able to see what that good track is!
It could be a bluetooth headset display. (or a wired headset display).
with geastures, you would be able to control just a few functions on such a smakk display, and you could cover most of the functionality of a bluetooth headset control.
But you can see a picture of whos calling.
Or se what track your a listening to.
Trackpad... well not this display, but it would not surprise me if they were working on a touchscreen trackpad... it would however be bigger.
It's gonna be the new click wheel for the ipod nano and classic
@luckycharette
that seems pointles, but on the other hand I think a tablet running iOS is pointles, so I would not swear on it not being so.
I think apple would just make the screens touchscreen, but perhaps not redesign the interface to be fingerfriendly, but insted use geastures for controlling. To replace the clickwheel functionality.
And this screen is to small for a Nano, even.
But the screen size would work for geasture input commands needed to replace the controls of a shuffle.
So if this is for a music unit, I would say shuffle. (or iWatch if that plays back music)
iWatch.
Perhaps.
Then its not just a watch but also bluetooth feedback and control device for your iPhone.
Personally Ive been thinking of the possiblilities with an watch running Android.
You can skin it anyway you like.
You can add features you like, if you want a sportswatch, well built in GPS, accelerometer and BT heartrate monitor would give you what you need.
So an iWatch sound nice to mee, as it would get others to follow.
So i can get Android or MeeGo on a watch.
well let me just put it this ways. it looks like a scam. first off anyone can make that touchpad/screen. also in 2007 apple was in search for a company to make small screens for new ipods. now this looks like it fits kinda in the time period. now if its not lets put it this way.
a company hypothetically makes a screen for a product they want to make to look like another product (i.e. a kirf) and lets say said company wants to make it as legit as possible. all they have to do is walk into china and omg all these name brand manufacturer parts are pretty easy to get. its even easier to find a no name cable and just have apple printed on it. also on another note apples cabling is now labeled "apple inc" not just "apple" well that and anything apple anymore. so this is pretty old if it is anything at all
Why did so few read the meassurements of this thing?
Its not the display for Nano or Classic, cause its too small.
Its not a trackpad/touchpad, cause its too small.
It probably not a display for Apple TV-unit, as its to small to be readable from a distance.
Its too small for for iPhone Nano.
Its too small for iPad nano.
Its too small to be a macbook display.
and the list goes on and on, and they are repeated time and time again. Sure, so is the shuffle suggestion, but that is cause people dont seem to get, how it could make sense on such a device. And people don seem to understand its to small for the other music players.
Its too big to be a button for a keyboard.
As some one sad, bring out a ruler.
iWatch, ok size.
Shuffle, ok size.
remote control display, a bit small, but sure, for a cheap kind of remote.
Bluetooth headset remote, ok size.
information display in a macbook pro, sure, but why when you can make a touchpad do that. On the outside. sure, for basic media control, but still think Apple would do it a bit bigger, to make it more userfriendly, on such a high end device.
it is a nuclear wmd that apple will deploy from their top secret iplane onto the Google headquarters.
I'm sure whatever it is Mac fan boys will be praising it like the second coming.
Apple's take on the Optimus Maximus keyboard?
I think it's iPod Shuffle Touch edition? Something like this:
http://forums.mactalk.com.au/12/41943-ipod-shuffle-touch-screen.html
how about the new iPod touch... just like the 3rd generation of iPod nano...or the iPad Nano haha...
My guess is it could be something like Art Lebedev Aux. Some quicktime even buttons, that change accordingly to the app.
It is obviously an eyePad.
Stick it on a pair of glasses so you can watch full HD (or maybe even 4K) on it's super retina display. Able to be controlled by eyelashes and running iOS 5.
"What is this?? A Cinema Display... for ANTS??"
What are those RGB horizontal lines running across the screen?
Could be for a new iPod Shuffle?
@Cainhunpi remember that apple patent for the disappearing button????
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/30/apple-applies-for-disappearing-button-patent/
The new iPhone 4 antenna !
iPipBoy?
Obviously to replace the electromechanical wheel on the iPod.
How about a replacement for the wheel on the nano? It could change labels/functions/design based on what you are doing currently (i.e. camera vs music).
this is iTape, which will be used to cover the antenna of the ill fated iphone 4's.
It's for a wearable display, so you can use your iDevices lying down.
It's the iWatch.
@ engadget: In the first sentence, the word "what" was left out. It should read: "shots of what appears to be..."
I say its a small solar panel. maybe a semi transparent one with a display underneath!
The iEediot, man... I like it.
Remote for new Apple TV & new Nano screen. The current apple remote is nice, but have you ever seen that many buttons on an Apple device of that size?
It replaces the single button bellow the screen on the iPhone 5
stand alone touchpad
My guess is this is for a replacement of the iPod shuffle making a low priced mp3 touch and app friendly, a new kind of app the small device to make it somehow compatible with the IPHN & IPD, IT- devices, bringing a new kind of device that's app friendly? Genius
time capsule or apple tv.
