@John Stathakis I don't think so. Any one the big players would have been of interest, but of course Apple is one of the most interesting because: 1. They make a limited amount of different devices 2. Their product lines is very focused 3 Their products usually have a big impact
@Cainhunpi Few ideas... 1. Replaces the glowing apple logo on apple notebook computers. 2. Back display for next iPhone (high res self pics?) 3. Screen for iPod shuffle
@Cainhunpi - its likely a touch screen! for a new nano device, but one that can SNAP into a watch band, I am sure. It will have Bluetooth for stereo headphones, and also poop elf m&m's.
@Cainhunpi Your comment just reminded me... Anyone remember that table Microsoft brought out, which was all touch screen? What was that called... There was a load of business about that being the biggest step forward since colour screens. I haven't heard any news of them since...
They're being used in stores, I believe, and at Microsoft events, but there doesn't seem to be any interest in mass-producing them. Of course, they probably wouldn't sell too many for what they would cost. A good 32" LCD TV costs $400, so I can't imagine what a 32" touch screen would cost.
@John Stathakis Yes, it made the news only because it's Apple branded. Might have something to do with the fact that Apple have a very well-known product line, and if indeed it's authentic it likely constitutes at the very least an arguably significant addition to an existing product (e.g. nano screen etc), and at the most newsworthy, it might be part of a new device (e.g. watch etc). I'm hardly a fanboy, so maybe a little objectivity wouldn't go astray? Maybe I could pick a side and you could have mine...
@thesafetylemur I would say i'm 90% sure it's a touchpad for macbooks. I've worked with laptop repairs, and that connector looks exactly like a trackpad connector.
@Cainhunpi My guess is that the new Apple TV will have a touch screen integrated into the device (not as a remote). This could be it.
I think it'll be more like an Apple Media device than an Apple TV. It'll do TV, music, radio, etc, and its interface will be a touch screen.
I have a PS3, which people refer to as a multi-media device. I've always disagreed with that because it's a device that requires my TV to be turned on (unless via PSP). I don't want my TV turned on to listen to music. This is where all next-gen consoles fail as media devices. They require the TV to be on to do anything. I think that Apple sees that, and that an integrated touch screen would solve the issue.
It definitely seems like a small Mp3 touch player.
I'm guessing this is goinnto be dedicated to playing movies and music and possibly even Internet, but it's targeted at younger kids/teens and will be very cheap, like $99 or $149.
I personally like the idea, I think a 1.5inch youch screen would be adorable and my little sister would absolutely love it, I know it wouldn't break as easy as an iPod touch, but if it did I wouldn't even care bcause they'd be so cheap.
It will be interesting to see the OS on this.
I'm guessing it's very simple, it has a set of apps like Settings, Music, Video, Safari, Photos, Radio all aligned Vertically and you scroll around by swiping left to right, with the status bar always showing just like the other ios.
There's also a possibility that there will be a dedicated app store for this called like the app store mini where you can download mini apps and stuff :)
just some guessing and predicting, let's see if I'm right!
The reason why those companies aren't as breaking as Apple because Apple tends to keep everything secret until a month before it come out, where as the other companies post the product on their site months or even a year before it comes out.
Don't get me wrong: I hate Apple's business philosophy. HOWEVER, I believe this is noteworthy due to apple's track record of keeping their secrets well kept til the very end (well, not much lately ;). Therefore, I agree that this should be posted.
I don't care if I get downranked for that first sentence. ;)
@beckhams777 Actually, you might not be far off. 3x3 is a good size for a MacBook trackpad. The trackpads in current MacBooks are made from glass - this could be an evolution of that...some kind of trackpad/display hybrid w/multitouch, perhaps?
@John Stathakis Mate you're drinking the Apple hate Kool-Aid... I know it quenches your mighty deuch bag thirst but it's seriously bad for you. Rest assured if a google branded 3 inch touch screen showed up it would be on engadget as well. Don't fool yourself mate.

My Apple tabletop
@Cainhunpi
New touchpad for macbooks.
likely a new iPod Nano Touch or something similar. touch seems to be the rage these days, sells things like hotcakes. oh and magical too.
Why does it say 2009 on it?
Oh an why is this news? Do we see news items about screens for Nokia, Htc, Samsung, Sony etc?
@Cainhunpi
Apple watch? Maybe....
@John Stathakis I don't think so. Any one the big players would have been of interest, but of course Apple is one of the most interesting because: 1. They make a limited amount of different devices 2. Their product lines is very focused 3 Their products usually have a big impact
@John Stathakis I know your trolling but I think you may actually be right this time
@Cainhunpi

@John Stathakis werd
@Cainhunpi
Apple TV 2 remote.
@John Stathakis To be fair, nobody cares about what other companies have to offer.
@hostbot
They've posted about other prototypes before.
Stop trolling.
@thesafetylemur It's 3x3CM the Touchpads in the macbooks are more than twice as big
@Cainhunpi THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE EVERYTHING
It's the iFrame.
@thesafetylemur Hate to rain on your mathematical parade there but...
3cm square is the width of about two finger tips pressed together. It's a bit on the small side to be a laptop touch pad...
@Cainhunpi - its likely a touch screen! for a new nano device, but one that can SNAP into a watch band, I am sure. It will have Bluetooth for stereo headphones, and also poop elf m&m's.

@markca
This is so sadly true.
Next time what will it be ? An apple-branded USB cable ?
It's the update for the iPod Classic
@Cainhunpi
Basing this on the fact that it's just big enough for a thumb, I'm taking two guesses:
1. It's a variable function button that disappears under the unibody, like they patented earlier.
2. It's a small sample screen. Possibly a Retina Display prototype, because it's 2009.
@Alex R You're referring to the Surface.

It's the Itile for the new Ifloor.

@Alex R Microsoft Surface
@John Stathakis You wouldn't have clicked on it if it was just any old touchscreen. Engadget posts what the readers want, so stop bitching about it.
@VanNorden AGAIN

I thought this story was interesting. If you think apple sucks or you don't want to read about them, take a look at
http://www.engadget.com/exclude/apple/
@hostbot
Sir, I hope you just forgot the /s in your post...or it's the most ridiculous thing I have read in a while. troll.
@thesafetylemur I think it's the iWatch! http://www.macdaddynews.com/?p=3683
@beckhams777 Actually, you might not be far off. 3x3 is a good size for a MacBook trackpad. The trackpads in current MacBooks are made from glass - this could be an evolution of that...some kind of trackpad/display hybrid w/multitouch, perhaps?
@Cainhunpi
ha...this might be the new iripoff
@SolidSnake
The Apple Watch. The first watch to run apps on a 1" screen. Accessories required for full clock functionality.
@SolidSnake It does everything but tell time, and Jobs has blocked all Time-checking apps.
@thesafetylemur
That would be SWEET a full color "display" touchpad. Hm.... :drool:
@Alex R Surface
@Cainhunpi Its obviously a coaster.... like come on...
@Cainhunpi Its a smaller version of the iPad...
New Face time stand alone home screen LCD
@thesafetylemur Too small for the MacBook. Maybe for a new Apple TV?
@Cainhunpi
Engadget: Its a trackpad ribbon. That ribbon carries usb data.
