Cellphone inventor Marty Cooper says he knew everybody would have one someday
Marty Cooper may have kept a fairly low profile since inventing the cellphone in the early 1970s, but he has been out in the public eye a bit more recently, and has now given a fairly lengthy interview to CNN in which he ruminates on the invention that quite literally changed the world. Perhaps most notably is that he says he and his team at Motorola always "knew that someday everybody would have a cellphone," but that he found it "hard to imagine that that would happen in my lifetime." Of course, he was also once again asked about his current cellphone, and surprisingly revealed that he's actually been trying out a Vertu recently. Hey, you've earned it, Marty.

[Thanks, Jeff]

so geek, love you.
@xdeiri sure but did he know that i could vnc my desktop with it?
@Upwad0n
i hate to bring i phone here but i wonder what he has to say about the i phone 4 antenna?
@xdeiri
That button layout should be the new style of the slip phones, old school.
@xdeiri He actually SIS have something to say about the iPhone which seems to be conveniently omitted here.
@xdeiri
Why doesn't Engadget post this news
http://www.androidcentral.com/marty-mobile-inventor-cell-phone-says-android-every-bit-good-iphone
Oh wait...
@xdeiri
Ha, this proves you can't get cancer from a cellphone, he's been using them longer than anyone.. and he's still here! :)
@Hoobaloo
umm but look at his hair it wasn't all white before cellphones you know?
@the real deal They won't unless its Apple related. Old Steve doesn't like infidelity and will make sure you'll be tooken care of.
@the real deal
Considering the dude is currently using a Vertu, I really don't think smart phones are his thing. That considered, his opinion on Android phones and iPhones isn't all that valuable.
@the real deal except this was in March, before the iPhone 4, and iOS 4....carry on trolling.
@Cats That was yesterday actually
@Dreamwell Considering he switches regularly, his last phone being a Droid, I'd say his opinion is just as good as anyone else's.
who cares, what have you done for me lately, grandpa.
@Dreamwell
It is not clear what he what he uses personally actually. The article mentions that the connection was lost and CNN had to call him back on HIS SON'S phone which is when he makes the comment that he is talking on a Vertu. So it may be his son that uses the Vertu regularly, at least that is how it comes across in the article.
He mentions he uses all kinds of phones, and gives the obligatory plug to Motorola (who else would he praise since he spent the best years of his life with them?).
I'd say its safe to say the every company gives him phones to try all the time.
@xdeiri
He droped his iPhone 4 for the DROID.
He using it actually.
@Cats dumbass
@the real deal Because no one gives a crap. Really, fanboyism of all stripes is tired and busted.
@xdeiri What would this geezer have to offer in your opinion? He invented something and then did nothing. What he did wasn't even unheard of. Bell was the first to imagine a cell phone, not this guy. He was just somebody that had a corporation to fund Bell's idea.
@xdeiri
that would be called the aging process
@xdeiri
Actually he mentioned the antenna on his twitter account:
"I haven't heard anything about the iPhone antenna glitch lately. Is it possible Apple will get away with the software myth? Your comments?"
@xdeiri : definately a pot smoker. :)
ohhh big phone!!! I want it!!!
@TheSunman89 I wonder how big the touchscreen on that is.
@TheSunman89
Hey that guy stole Zack Morris' phone!
@Why should I have all the fun Nope, it's Tommy Vercetti's phone.
@TheSunman89
I miss phones with antennas. I just can't find a good cellphone with a retractable antenna.
@Arkv2 If you are a Verizon customer, the Moto E815 is a classic with a smallish retractable antenna and great reception (sadly, if it hasn't been replaced with a stub antenna by the owner). There are several for sale right now.
You forgot that he still uses his Droid.
And all kinds of other stuff. Don't worry... won't hold you guys to it. ;P
@EggoEspada Ok so I'm not the only one who noticed this omission.
@Blaque14K Not just that omission. His statement saying that Android is every bit as good, if not better, than the iPhone.
so, motorla-man is using a "nokia". ha!
@dartox
wonder what he thinks of the Droid X
@dartox he uses a droid as well
@JeremyBenthem
He is the cellphone man; he must have a physical keyboard! Hah!
MARTIN COOPER: ANDROID IS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE IPHONE
@jussipussi Interesting how that bit of IPhone news wasn't covered. But taping any random object to an iPhone warrants the "breaking" label.
@jussipussi You forgot to add the part "if not better" in his statement. Which I was pretty surprised about.
He also has a Motorola Droid and not just a Nokia.
@djt except this was in March, before the iPhone 4, and iOS 4....
@Cats
It was FUCKIN YESTERDAY YOU IDOIOT. STOP PROTECTING APPLE
@Cats Look at his twitter and read the full interview, he says the iPhone is great, which I agree it has its pros, but its hyped.
Android devices are just as good, if not better.
No need to try getting defensive, if you like your iOS device thats fine..
@EggoEspada On top of that in his twitter account, he only follows 4 people. Droid Life is one of them. He's a FanDroid!!! Whoohooo!
@djt
>he and his team at Motorola
>his team at Motorola
>Motorola
He has a Motorola Droid
Gee, I wonder why he's following Droid Life... Perhaps the only fanboy here is you?
I don't use Android or have a Droid btw, so no need to call me a FanDroid.
@Death I was calling martin a fandroid. Not you. Seriously, that wasn't clear? Also I wasn't even saying that as a bad thing. I'm sending this from my droid right now. :)
@djt
Oh. I read it as sarcasm. Never mind then, sorry for the misunderstanding, carry on.
@jussipussi Quoting Mr. Cooper "I had an iPhone for a while, I gave that to my grandson. Kids are really caught up in that. But I think that the Android phones are catching up now, and the latest version of the Android phones are every bit as good, if not better, than the iPhone."
Once more "Kids are really caught up in that". Am I misunderstood his statement. ;-))
This deserves a Nobel Prize, not Insane Hussein.
@Sea Urchin I meant to say this GUY deserves a Nobel Prize, not President "too busy Obizzy"
@Sea Urchin childish name calling
amazing
@Sea Urchin ha, that was pretty funny...insane Hussein :)
