Geohot teases iPhone 4 jailbreak, no plans for release
Is this the honest-to-goodness iPhone 4 jailbreak we've been waiting for, or just another userland JB? It's hard to say from here... but either way, don't expect Geohot to release it into the wild. In a mildly jaded blog post, the original iPhone hacker makes it clear that whatever he did here was for his own amusement, and judging by the title of that entry ("Meh") the whole breaking-and-entering bit isn't giving him quite the same chuckles it used to. That's a shame, but we hear the iPhone Dev Team is making progress apace, so let's leave Geohot to tackle one of his other promised hacks, mmmkay?

lol the iphone 4 hasn't been jailbroken yet?
@grumbles Right, I thought it happened already..
@grumbles
It has, and it would have been released already, but Apple is updating their OS to "fix" some issues, but we all know they are using that to patch these exploits.
So the dev team have 2 choices.
1. Release right away, and have it get patched weeks later
2. Wait 1 week - month for Apple to update and fix the issues, then release.
There are already 2 jailbreak programs available, Geohots full jailbreak, or the dev teams userland jailbreak.
The userland jailbreak is most likely to get released first, and then when its patched, Geohot will release his.
@uckApple whats the difference between a userland jailbreak and a bootrom exploit? please explain a bit
@grumbles The iPhone dev team and comex have already jailbroke the iPhone 4 but they haven't released tools publically yet. The iPhone 4 baseband has also been unlocked, and the devs are currently finding a way to keep the unlock task backgrounded. Which is the way it keeps the phone unlocked.
I'm not sure why everyones on his dick. Geohot isn't the only person doing this lol.
@bebaduh Userland can be patched, bootrom exploits cannot be.
@Gregtotheizzo
I think its because all of his programs are so easy, and when he announces a jailbreak, its released just weeks later, and thats always predictable.
@grumbles
lol the x10 hasn't been rooted yet?
@jellotime91
the what? ;)
@jellotime91
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/10/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-has-been-rooted-all-is-right-with-the/
say what?
@grumbles that really could just be a screenshot from another device
@uckApple Redsn0w from the dev team and comexs spirit jb are both point and click user-friendly. So that's obvisously not correct.
I bet it's because geohots blog is the easiest to find while not many know who to follow on twitter lol
@grumbles There's no reason, os 4 adds any features that weren't in os 3 that were in jailbreak, mtasking, background, Bluetooth keyboards, there's no reason to jailbreak and there never was
@That guy 2 Obviously you never jailbroken your phone...
lmao why was my comment down ranked, it was just a simple question
engadget readers are so sensitive~
@That guy 2 Buying apps apple rejected, unlock to use ur iPhone on any carrier network (gsm), break 12 apps limit in folders, mobile hotspot, tethering, facetime on 3g!?, installing android OS or any OS you want etc… there'll always be a reason to jailbreak, the number one: freedom. Enjoy ur iPhone the way u want :) Thanks to the dev team, geohot and all dev working hard to make it happen.
@NextGen
SBSettings is an important one for me.
@Gregtotheizzo
whats the point of unlocking if no other carrier uses the micro sim card
@Notme2 Because the microsim is a regular sim only smaller. You only need a scissor and a file. There's instructions all over the web.
@Notme2 You do know the only difference between a regular sim and a microsim is the size right? There's guides all over the web on how to do make it smaller and I think even engadget posted one of them recently.
@NextGen
What the name of the package that allows you to install more than 12 apps into one folder?
@EagleyeSmith Categories
@Notme2 Doesn't matter, that's why having a micro sim card is great. Just get a standard sim card for the carrier want and use scissors to trim it to micro sim card size. So Simple! :D .....now if they had made it larger, that'd be a different story! haha..... can't grow 'em larger!!!
@kroneage you get an adapter then....
@Notme2 if you saw when the 3g iPad was released people were cutting T-Mobile sims to the size of the micro sim.
lame.
@bergwitz
Totally. I would understand if he didn't want to show the exploit prior to the iphone update, but to do it just wave in peoples faces... /sigh
@l33tlolz
Meh, him bragging about it doesn't bother me. It's coming out either way. I read the twitter comments. It sounded like he was joking more then trying to be a "narcissistic, self-promotional" egotistical douche as everyone else puts it.
@l33tlolz I agree. Look at what he did to PS3, he pissed a lot of people off cause of Sony removing Linux cause he showed off a hack, then never actually released the custom firmware as promised. So we all lost features for nothing.
Showing a hack and not releasing it is just pissing everyone off
@Extinction
I completely agree. I didn't update my PS3 in hopes for this hack for a long time. I needed linux and was depending on geohot. Atleast a time frame or an actual post that he wasn't releasing it would have helped alot.
@EagleyeSmith double meh. this guy is a bloody tease. still waiting on that ps3 custom update. why don't you finish that first since the iphone 4 has plenty of modders?
@EagleyeSmith
True, but if you have followed him (geohot) ever since hes been known, that IS the type of person he really is.
thanks engadget for emphasizing the PS3 exploit.
I'm really waiting for this , but geohot remains quiet
@iHack13
I guess he is being quiet is because his name is now widely out in the open, enough so that he can be a target of companies and the legal system. See Geo cant be sued for hacking his own devices, but if a name is attached to a hack that is given out to the masses then the companies can sue to get compensation for fixing the problem a person willfully handed out.
This maybe why he has not posted much of anything of what hacks he has done on the iph4 and ps3. The companies know who he is and where he is so the companies can say if you cause harm then the companies can ask the courts for compensation for the problem caused by geo. Its like how Dark Alex no longer supplies any hacking info for the psp's. Sony found out who he is and where to find him and said if he did anything else they would take him to court to ask for compensation for the problems incured from the hacking information he gave out.
@Able
so what about the xecuter team which is dealing with the XBOX?
They havent got sued and are even selling their own pcbs ...
@iHack13
Sometimes it takes time to hunt down the ppl involved and locate where they are and depending on the situation the company can see if its more cost effective to just ban ppl from the xbox service to the point where the customer has to rebuy everything to get back onto the service or just sue the company. OR both where the company gets money from selling new systems and at the same time building up a case to use agenst the team to the point of adding up how much damages that team has made and how much MS wants to be compensated (wich might be a amount where the team cannot recover from).
Its not always a fast process.
@Able apple has known where tis guy hascbeen evervsibce he unlocked the first iphone. heck youve been able to find oyt exactly wherevhe is at for ever. this morning he is at class. your logic is flawed in this case but correct in the darkalex one
@DefPoet
do you need a new keyboard?
@iHack13 nope just trying out the compact qwerty on my touchpro 2 i'll tyoe with the hardware qwerty from now on
@DefPoet
My logic is not flawed. Like as you pointed out Geo is in class and is about to Graduate. Now if geo wants to get a good job with a company would it be wise of him to post alot of hacked information to the internet at this time. Would a company hire him if they feel that what ever product geo helps make will end up having hacked info posted on the internet or any product that company makes somehow has hacked info put on the internet.
As for Geo not openly posting what he has done but not giving the details is one way to cover himself from being sued. So go read up on the law and look things through. A person has the right to hack their own property (as in hardware), but if a hack is disruptive and posted out in the open for the masses to use, then the company can sue the person that was responsable for putting out the hack, as in compensation for fixing the problem.
As for Geo i dont think he will be posting to many details any time soon because the companies know who he is and can supply proof in court that he was the one responsable for damages that might occure.
@iHack13 They don't release FWs. It's like releasing metal, it's not a deadly weapon until you throw it at someone or make a gun out of it
@iHack13
Sorry to break the news. It is a bit better than not being informed at all though.
http://www.maxconsole.net/content.php?40756-Not-even-Geohot-s-PS3-dev-team-have-spoken-to-him-in-months
@Able I'm suprised no one here has notice yet, but GeoHot is just the cocky kinda a guy how doesn't give a rats ass about anything but fame...
Oooo look at me, I can unlock iphone, hack PS3, jailbreak iPhone 4.... Like a lot of you said he is well known.. doesn't need the fame anymore... I say we STOP talking about the guy if we want something from him.... IMO he's an ass for that
Mehhhhhhhhh......yawn
Or lets say F Egohot...and let the true dev team who has never let us down do their work. I understand that the idiots calling him and bothering him on twitter are making him not want to release or even work on it. Some of the things the twidiots come up with would make me want to do the same but it comes with the territory.
@TWiz
you mean the so called dev team that refuses to write software for the os that the vast majority of ios users use.
if u use windows do not expect anything from the dev team they say its not worth their time. comex and geohot actually release products that work regaedless of os
Completely agreed. Geohot is just a publicity whore, and always has been. Thanks for the jailbreaks over the year, but I think we're all fed up with his ego...
And stop patronizing him for the ps3 fix, he caused the problem to begin with!
@DefPoet Redsn0w runs on windows...only pwnage is Mac only but who cares.
@DefPoet
Hey Genius, Comex is on the dev team....besides that, you are just wrong in general:

@bergwitz
When he released an arbitrary-code hack for the PS3, it lead to Sony making things quantifiably worse for people who owned the original PS3, so that probably leaves a bad taste in your mouth when people start blaming you for that. Besides, it's not like he promised to give this out or in some way owes you anything.
