Samsung quietly expands its 3D Blu-ray player lineup with a few updated models
Don't be surprised to see a couple of new Samsung Blu-ray players on the shelf at local or online retailers while shopping, as it's rolling out new 3D capable models in the BD-C5900, BD-C6800 and BD-C7900. The $399 (MSRP) BD-C7900 updates the older BD-C6900 with two HDMI outs, useful for those with an older receiver that isn't HDMI 1.4 compatible, while the $279 BD-C6800 seems to have all the features of the BD-C6900 except for that porthole on top, and comes in at a lower price. Last up is the BD-C5900 with an MSRP of $229 which puts it within reach of two bills at retail, but means losing the 1GB of internal storage featured by the other two players. The product pages aren't all fully updated on Samsung's site yet, but the BD-C5900 has already arrived at Amazon and Best Buy and the others shouldn't be far behind. Of course, if 3D's not your thing, we'd still keep an eye out for their arrival -- a price break on the older 2D-only models that were released earlier this year shouldn't be too far behind.

I dont get it, its not about phones...
@TwoADays
Hey Samsung, put down the 3D stuff and go make some AMOLED screens for cryin' out loud!
I don't know. So far, Samsung is the only company with the common sense to do this:
"The $399 (MSRP) BD-C7900 updates the older BD-C6900 with two HDMI outs, useful for those with an older receiver that isn't HDMI 1.4 compatible"
Uh, no, it's a kick-ass option for people who want full-rez 3-D with no requirement for $150 glasses. Get two projectors instead of a "3-D capable" TV, put relatively cheap polarizing filters on the front, and everyone in the room gets to see a full-frame 3-D picture with inexpensive polarized glasses. You'd need a silver screen, but you might be able to get filters for the Real3D system ("super anaglyph") and use a white screen or wall.
The number of "3-D capable" Blu-Ray players with only one HDMI output is just dumb.
@Information Central or, not. you're only getting audio on that second output, and panasonic was first.
@Information Central lol... errrr not quite...
@ RichardLawler +1 dude
Wow, more cluelessness. The specifications page on the Samsung site says only one HDMI output, but the owner's manual does show an asinine HDMI port for audio. WTF? Talk about missing the boat.
And the ignorance continues with Samsung's statements about their oh-so-ingenious "Screen Fit" feature:
"With the Screen Fit feature, the BD-C7900 Blu-ray disc player automatically converts 21:9 aspect ratio movies to 16:9 aspect, eliminating those annoying black bands crowding the scenes. Watch movies the way they were meant to be seen- with just one touch of the Screen Fit button."
The way they were meant to be seen is the way the director FILMED AND MATTED IT. "Annoying black bars"? The people complaining about this must also be complaining about how stereo requires that "second annoying speaker."
I'm embarrassed to admit this, but the sheer number of BD players on the market has contributed to my not buying one for two reasons: 1) the research effort to find "the best one" increases with the number of models available, and 2) new models come out so quickly that "the best one" today is likely to be dogmeat tomorrow.
Oh, technology, why do I still love you when you spite me so?
@CRA1G
Wow I thought it was only me...
I was quite ready to get over the whole format war and support Bluray but I'm quite worried that the "next thing" is right around the corner especially with 3D and everything...
@CRA1G
If you can't commit your time to find "the best one" just buy a good one, there are plenty of those. They play BD movies and that's all that really matters in a BD player
You can thank me later:

@CRA1G
Yup the bd players are constantly evolving but the reality is the majority of the bluray players from Sony and Samsung are pretty well built and have most of the features you need.
I think the whole 3d fad will die pretty soon so I wouldn't bother getting a 3d bluray player or tv. The technology just isnt there and tbh it distracts from the content. That's just my opinion.
@BrookLynnsFinest
for me it's the fact the fact that a decent Blu-ray player's price is still around $250, which I consider to be far too much considering it's not a massive difference from an my upscaling DVD player, and for $50 more you can just get a PS3 which still seems like the only safe option for a player since it doesn't get outdated, but unless you really want it for the games it's hard to justify
@CRA1G agreed, the only one on the market imo worth getting is the ps3 slim ( I have the fat), however I got mine for its main aspect games. Ironic I suppose since now its mostly used for streaming/bluray's I'm a pc gamer. Point being is that the purchase gives you options outside of just bluray.
@JeremyBenthem Take another look. BB has the Samsung BD-C5500 for $149. If you don't need WiFi, that is a great deal. If you want the WiFi, they have that version for $219. The price of players are dropping, especially slightly outdated models. At this point, you no longer really need to wait for the latest and greatest player. The non-niche features are available and out there.
Who cares?
You can see through to the disc? That's pretty sweet actually...
I just went to the Samsung site. This is one of their prized features for the player:
"Fewer distractions. Fuller Screen."
To maximize your viewing experience, to truly feel the power of on-screen portrayals, you need all the picture you can get. With the Screen Fit feature, the BD-C6900 Blu-ray disc player automatically converts 21:9 aspect ratio movies to 16:9 aspect, eliminating those annoying black bands crowding the scenes. **Watch movies the way they were meant to be seen- with just one touch of the Screen Fit button.**

@Will Dearborn
So not only is there going to be unnecessary scaling but a loss of picture on the sides? That's what I call an awesome feature!
These 3D stuff is confusing consumer. I thought my 120hz TV and a DVD player is good to run 3D but I need a 3d BR player? Isn't regular BR disc player capable of running 3D image? This is why 3D must die.
As Jimmy Fallon said on the last engadget episode, 3D TV's are stupid cuz you have to wear special glasses just so you can watch TV. I mean come on people all you want is money so make something that requires no work at all for us lazy ass americans. The world is becoming lazier ans they make a TV that requires moving while your sitting all comfortable on a couch or a bed, and most people know that's the worst time to have to do something or have to be bothered by something or someone is when you're on the couch or relaxing in bed
"they make a TV that requires moving while your sitting all comfortable on a couch or a bed"
First of all: "your sitting"?
YOU + ARE = YOU'RE
Second, WTF are you babbling about? How does 3-D require moving? And it's always going to require glasses. The complaining about it is really just stupid at this point. If you take a minute and think about how your eyes work, you'll be able to figure out why you need glasses. If you can't... you probably should just give up this entire line of inquiry.
Hey Samsung , I am still not giving a shit with 99% of america...3D my ass, its a stupid move to bet on I won't be getting a 3D tv until every channel is in 3D and it doeant add to the cable bill
That's not going to happen, since there's no provision for 3-D in our "advanced" TV standard in the U.S. In fact, we can't even get modern codecs. We're stuck with outdated MPEG-2 at shitty bitrates essentially forever. Oh, not to mention that we still subjected to INTERLACING and idiotic 29.97 FPS.
Is anyone old enough to remember the "Quad" stereo craze? I predict 3D TV in its current itineration will be as dead as quadrophonic records in a few years. That's not to say it won't ever come back (as quad sort of fathered surround sound) but not until 60++ inch TVs are commonplace. 3D on even a 40 in LCD looks way too tiny.
I'm hoping Sony gets moving on some high end BR players. I have the 5000es and it is one hell of a DVD upscaler as well as a very good BR player but I'm ready for a 3D model. Sony has BR players that are 3D but not any really high end ones.
@boe the new ES Blu-ray player announced last week does 3D, but it depends what features you want.
@RichardLawler Thanks - if you are talking about the ES one I think you are it is a very low end BR player. I'm hoping Sony releases a high end BR player to replace the 5000es. The price of BR player doesn't dictate how good it is, the oppos have a lot of bang for the buck but they are so light they slide on the shelf when you press a button on them.
@boe
Ignorance is bliss...you need to do a bit of research on the ES line from Sony... then once you have made up your mind from the interweb, go and actually check out a unit in person.
The construction and quality of the ES line are in a class of their own. Perhaps a tad pricey at points, but not outlandish... and certainly not "very low end" as you claim.
Just the fact that you mention that the players are so light they will slide off a shelf... not the ES. It is built like a tank... your comment is a testament to the fact that you don't have the first clue what you are talking about. Not a slight, just an accurate conclusion.
@insidethemachin3 Your reading skills need improvement. I was talking about the oppos if you reread my comment ;not a slight, just an obvious conclusion.
There are more than one ES BR units available and the newest one is not in the same league as the 5000es BR player which I have, however it does have the 3D feature which mine does not.
Beware that Samsung is not supporting 3D checkerboard format in these players even though that was the 3D format they used in their "3D ready" DLP TVs. From cell phones to TVs, we know all too well how Samsung treats its customers with its lack of support and update of released products.
Any, according to AVSForum, the Panasonic DMP-BDT300 support the 3D checkerboard format.
Samsung is doing a great thing by doing this. The other companies have not done so yet.
It is better to get ahead of your competitors.
We shall see what happens with 3d, the verdict is still out.
