Sure, smartphone and tablets might be the Next Big Thing, but desktop computing ain't dead yet -- just ask
Intel, which just reported its best-ever quarter with a $2.9b profit on $10.8b in revenue. That's an increase of $445m in profit from last quarter and a whopping $3.3b from last year, all driven by record laptop and server chip revenue, as well as a 16 percent increase in Atom revenue. What's more, the average sale price of all those chips went up, and selling more chips at a higher price is always good for business. Intel's got a call to discuss these numbers in depth at 5:30PM ET, we'll let you know if we hear anything good.
@Hydraulics
Not
@Hydraulics I think Nokia will releas an ARM meego device. at least in the begining. until intesl solve the battery life problem
YAY for Atom.
You could sure build a lot of robots with that kind of cash.
Go Israel!
@sru
Go to Israel!
@sru i mean he's right.. Intel's research centers are there..
http://www.moital.gov.il/NR/exeres/49CA1B09-31FC-4D88-A603-FFD3D78A973C.htm
@sru
XD
Go Intel Ireland
@samisax Yep the Pentium M/Centrino, Core, Core 2 and Core i3/i5/i7
All designed in Israel.
@IMarius Intel pulled out of Ireland.
@samisax umm that made no sense, why hate on Israel?
The micrarchitecture for the new core processors was developed in Israel. They are directly related to Intel's soaring profits. I guess some people didn't know that...
@fourthletter : Core i3/i5/i7 was designed in Oregon. (not to mention various high-end MP flavors designed in other places.
@radarskiy No, they were manufactured in Arizon, New Mexico, and Oregon. There were not developed or designed there, sorry.
@sru : One of us has first hand knowledge of where these were designed. And it's not you.
"What's more, the average sale price of all those chips went up, and selling more chips at a higher price is always good for business."
Well, it's good for their business, but not for my wallet!
I contributed! My core 2 quad is the best CPU I have ever owned, but I'm going to milk it for years because I don't want to buy a new motherboard.
@npa189
cool story brah!
@npa189
I recently bought a Core2Quad as well, do you have the feeling as if CPUs don't need to get more powerful? Being able to game while my pc unrars 10x10gb archives is good enough for me on top of XP.
good for them, but not for me. Why?
I don't get any :(
poor AMD. I hope they get back in the game. I don't want to go back to the days of intel lockdown.
@glamajamma
yep. bad news for competition.
Expect news of AMD going bankrupt !
@JustThatNerdyGuy
Intel will never let that happen. Otherwise Intel will be a monopoly, and the U.S. government doesn't like keeping those around for too long after the industrial revolution...
I had a dream that one day AMD would defeat Intel.. oh damn, another wet dream.
It's not the USA, or Europe it's from the far East.
Any one visiting Asia will know that computers are just marching in to every little hole in the wall and by the mass. Good job Intel!
You all know you are the reason this is .... you all ran out to buy the new i3, i5, and i7 cpus that are way overpriced for their performance.
Unless you are rendering video AMD quads and Phenon cpus at half Intel prices get the job done quite well. A gamer that buys a top of the line i7 is a fool as most games are still programmed for single or dual cores.
Just say no to Intel and their prices
@darthgault
so your saying that it's all down to self builders going out to there local computer store to buy an intel cpu......
do you not think intel makes far more money from oem?
@darthgault i actually think the i7 920/930s are priced quite competitively for the performance however i agree below that with the possible exception of the i3 530 and the G6950 all Intel platforms are massively overpriced.
@nabberuk
thats totally not what i said ... where in there did type anything about people building their own system?
this season Sony and HP off the top of my head launched several lines of computers with AMD chipsets.
I am suggesting people save money by buying AMD driven products.
There ... english to english translation complete. :)
@darthgault
Meh! Would I pay a dollar a day to make my PC 20% faster when running Excel, Matlab, WinRaR, Handbrake, etc.?
Yes I would. Even if I only owned it for one year, my core i7 960 would be more than worth it.
@RawlsRorty
you are hardly a typical user running matlab. Handbrake (video rendering) so you can "back up your dvds" ... you need the i7 for what you do. My comments were in no way directed to you ... hence the phrase "... unless you are video rendering... "
whats with all the trolls picking fights on engadget comments?
for a NORMAL user AMD is the best value. Thats as simple as i can word it.
@darthgault The thing is...it's all cheap. Yes 20% seems big but computers are commodities nowadays. You have people shelling out $600 for an iPad, which is pretty much a toy.
You really think people will bat an eye at the extra $40 or so they have to spend for an Intel product? Especially when it's got more brand recognition (which, let's face it, matters more to the average person than benchmark numbers) and commercials about short indian dudes being rock stars in some futuristic work environment?
@metafor
Ok ... That actually all quite logical ... Can't argue with any of those points. Didn't think of any of that :)
It is about Corporate upgrading their servers and PCs
HOT diggitty dog!!!
The FTC will probably finally finish their investigation of the Intel mafia any day now. With this much profit, the fine should be substantial.
Can anyone say i7-980x? I hate the people who call there processors too expensive. Up until 160 dollars you buy AMD after that you buy Intel.
*cough*strangleholdonsub12inchlaptops*cough*
But where are the jobs?
@Slvrgun Israel. They're the design team behind the Core line. Intel's main employment in the U.S. is through fabs and some of the system-level stuff like chipset design.
Also, the Austin team are responsible for Atom.
@metafor Lower taxes = more profit.
holy shit a big company made a lot of money that's fuckin awesome!@!!2121111!!!1!!1
i just have to ask.... why is this breaking? there i said it
*coughcoughmonopolycoughcough*
can their processors even count that high?
I think Intel found a naming scheme they'll never have to deprecate... Coming in 2019... Intel Core i186. (Whoops... time for a new moniker.)
Well, I did my part with the purchase of my i5 mbp in the spring.
OK...so I suspect CPU's, mainboards, etc from Intel should now go down in price with this kind of profit, right? Right?
