iPhone 4 carrier unlock teased, not released just yet (update: video)

While we wait for a full, no-strings-attached jailbreak for the iPhone 4, let's turn our attention to the other important matter of unlocking, shall we? iPhone Dev Team member planetbeing is teasing the world with a picture of an unlocked AT&T iPhone 4 being used way up north on Canada's Bell -- and while we don't have a timeline for a release just yet, this should be particularly exciting news for Canadians who don't have much interest in waiting any longer for their version of the phone to officially arrive. We'll update you just as soon as it's available.

Update: Numerous readers have written in to remind us that the above image isn't proof of an unlock, since an AT&T iPhone can roam on Bell. True -- but considering how this is coming straight from an iPhone Dev Team member, we're going to stay optimistic.

Update 2: Planetbeing has uploaded a video of the carrier unlock (embedded after the break), but he confesses that the existing build "sucks." A cleaned up version should be ready for mass consumption shortly, though. [Thanks, all!]

I still think it should be illegal to sell carrier locked phones. Like the FCC should be all overbearing and start regulating that shit. Hell, I think Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint should all be forced to use GSM on the same frequencies, or a couple frequencies and have every phone support all of them. But that's such a pipe dream it's laughable.

I was in Canada last week and iphone 4 was roaming on Rogers all the way from Ottawa to Toronto up until i crossed the border at Buffalo.

So, lets wait until this is released. Otherwise, iphone either on Bell or Rogers could still be just a phone on roaming. Planetbeing could have shown us a Rogers or Bell simcard all trimmed to micro size jut like what geohot showed back in the day with iphone 1.

I don't know If everyone knows. But the iPhone 4 has BT Technology built right in. You buy yourself a BT ear piece and you can walk away from your iPhone 4 and maintain a crystal clear radio connection. That way your conversation will not end because of that giant left or right hand of yours.

Man, has there been any news on iPhone 3GS (new bootrom) unlock/jailbreak on iOS4? Its sad that iPhone 4 JB and unlocks are going ahead full steam, while a small number of 3gs owners seem to be stuck with useless devices (mine came with 3.1.3 direct from apple)

This has been out there for a few weeks. It does not Jailbreak an iPhone 4 or an iPhone 3GS on "new baseband". If you have a previously jailbroken 3GS at 3.1.2 this will upgrade you to iOS4 Jailbreaked

For the record some of us who were able to upgrade to iPhone 4 cheaply through At&T (mine $199) also travel internationally extensively. We desperately need a Jailbreak solution for iPhone 4 and 3GS "new baseband"

Does anyone have an updates on that?
