mSpot brings movie rentals to the iPad, works just fine over 3G
If you find yourself a little unimpressed with Netflix's Instant selection and you're needing to rent something a bit newer right now, the new iPad-optimized version of the mSpot movie streaming app should fit all up in your niche. For between $2.99 and $3.99 you can rent and watch a movie streaming right to your little slab of delight over either 3G or WiFi, though we're told those who do it via 802.11 can expect higher quality. You can also rent movies on your home computer, pause them there, and then resume playback on your iPad right where you left off. Handy when it's time to run to the train and you just can't wait to see whether George Clooney's Up in the Air character manages to find room for true companionship in his backpack.

Cheaper then renting from iTunes.
@ksunnyv99 have u checked it out? its only cheaper if the 3.99 rentals are HD which i doubt they are. most people are charging 4.99 for hd. ill check it out to confirm
@ksunnyv99 this place isnt cheaper than itunes, i just checked it out and there are no hd movies and the top titles are 3.99. thats what itunes charges
@ksunnyv99 Over 3G... with the 2GB Cap... Whatever AT&T... with APPS like this and the Hulu APP the Cap its a pain in the ass and makes Pretty Good APPS alot less useful that they could be
@ComboBreaker That's why I am glad they have the grandfather clause. I upgraded from my 3G and kept the $30 unlimited plan. Never giving up unlimited data as long as they'll allow it.
@ComboBreaker That's why I ultimately decided on a combo of a wifi-only iPad and an EVO 4G with a mobile hotspot. So far it's working out really well (data is nice and fast, and it's nice not to have to worry about hitting a 2GB data cap.... same reason I also didn't wait for the Droid X on Verizon).
@ksunnyv99 Cool, now I can use my 2 GB by watching a couple movies from mSpot. Sweet!
@idrumgood
That's why I'm glad I got the WiFi only iPad and don't use a tethered connection to my Verizon phone -- and yeah, it's real unlimited :) No caps. Sucks to be AT&T.
Same price as renting physical DVDs/BlueRay from Blockbuster? WTF?
@Bratan
You sound surpised. Don't you know that's how things have been since the advent of digital download stores? Weird. You must be new to tech
lol I laughed way too much at the Up in tr Air reference.
I'm glad to see apple approved the app though.
"..works just fine over 3G" .. if you hold it right!

@webmastir
Nice recycled comment. Shame you've got the wrong product
@suicidebob sigh. im well f'in aware i have the wrong product. it's just a joke towards apple in general. relax.
@webmastir
Don't mind suicide bob, he trolls engadget all day long venting his anger and frustrations...dude has got a killer up inside of him..he can't talk to his mother so he talks to his diary.
@webmastir
make one that hasn't been repeated 1000 times already.
@webmastir
Yeah, it was a joke. I'd be fairly ashamed at that attempt if I was you
@suicidebob heh. surprised at how much of a big deal you're making this out to be. get a life
@DoctarPeppar
I was on for 15 minutes. Not sure how you make that all day. Some of us have jobs.
And don't project. Deal with your issues.

Mspot company is a fail.
Their music streaming service is half assed. This is half assed.
About 90% of the people that considers renting from online do it through itunes or netflix.
Mspot theres no room for you dudes. Just give up your dream of becoming a digital choice. You really offer nothing that we cant get from top names like amazon,apple,microsoft, netflix.
@FrankDTank
Soundsike you tried out both services. That kinda proves there is room for them, no?
Over 3G? That sounds good but I bet it would kill the new tiered data plans.
@ck02623 My thoughts exactly.
This has been available for a while now on my ANDROID phone. So I'm good. And I still have unlimited data with big red.
@tocool
And there's the Android tard right on cue!
@suicidebob
Now that Paul the Psychic Octopus has retired, perhaps we need to turn to you? 6 Lucky Numbers, if you please, for next week's lottery...
@deedeedee
Oh, put a sock in it. As pro-Apple as I am, given the relative age of the iPad such statements are a) inflammatory and pointless, and b) probably counting your chickens before they've hatched. It's too early to be smug and people hate smug people anyway.
While I can see the appeal of a streaming service, particularly if you are located somewhere with a nice and reliable WiFi service, I can't help thinking that I'd much prefer to have the film stored on my device while it plays so that I can avoid interruptions, particularly if I am traveling on a 3G connection. Still, it's nice to have the choice of service (assuming you are living in the US).
@Kelmon
For every yard like him there's an equivalent Android tard. They all cancel each other out
@deedeedee
So what went through your head when you were posting this? Did you decide to ignore the fact Android has had mspot for quite a while or were you just uninformed? How about the fact that certain feature phones come with mspot loaded on them?
I would hardly use this, mspot is on the ipad, an application that came pre-loaded on the Sprint Motorola krzr in 2006, as support for the argument that any device is "2-3 years" ahead of anything. Rather, isn't it more of an argument that the ipad is 4 years behind the Motorola krzr?
what ever happened to netflix on the iphone?
@SpongeBobPistolPants
My thoughts exactly, i can't believe it never showed up.
"For between $2.99 and $3.99 you can rent and watch a movie streaming right to your little slab of delight over either 3G or WiFi, though we're told those who do it via 802.11 can expect higher quality."
Is the WiFi capability just for the iPad because mSpot on my EVO will only work over the 3G/4G connection? If I try to connect over WiFi it instructs me to turn the radio off. "It" being the mSpot app not the EVO.
This works on the iPhone too, and you can skip the data cap joke. I'm grandfathered in the unlimited plan.
