South Korea enlists armed sentry robots to patrol DMZ

South Korea has been working on deploying armed sentry robots along the border with North Korea since at least as far back as 2006, and it looks like it's still keeping at it. While complete details are a bit light, they country apparently put a pair of new sentry robots in place in the Demilitarized Zone last month, which pack both a machine gun and a grenade launcher to ward off intruders. Those would of course be controlled by humans, but the robots apparently use heat and motion sensors to do all the monitoring on their own, and simply alert a command center if they spots a trespasser. Of course, they are still just in the testing phase, and the military says it's waiting to see how things work out before it begins a more widespread deployment.
Update: According to Stars and Stripes, the gun-toting robot in question is a Samsung Techwin SGR-1 (now pictured above). If the video after the break is any indication, South Korea certainly seems to have made the right choice.

What is the point? The North Koreans will just shoot the robots - after all, it won't be like shooting actual soldiers so any serious retaliation by the South will not be justifiable.
Before they waste money designing and deploying these robots, maybe they should speak to some people in the games section of a university maths dept.

I remember hearing about this years ago. I only wonder why this wasn't employed years ago along the us borders ?
The news barely reports on the daily murders of hard working honest Americans by illegal and probably illiterate(had to include that .. predictive text suggested it :) drug runners and coyotes.
Imagine that just because you are out in your driveway about to leave for work you are the Target of some ruthless bandido here illegally with an illegal gun(what I mean is he's notP supposed to be here so he certainly isn't licensed to carry that ak47 or fully automatic glock9) and he wants your car. If you resist he'll pull you out and shoot you. Of you get out of the car of your own accord he'll shoot you just so you can't call the police.
The news won't report on it because it's not news , it's just a fact of life now. I saw this happening in Orlando Florida years ago. There were sooooooo many carjacking/armed robbery murders every day that the news just stopped reporting on it. It made the city look bad.

In order to balance that equation you need to account for the millions of innocents slaughtered by 'legal' US tech firepower on their 'driveways' by predators, napal and simpletons with a paycheck and a loaded M60 so some people (you don't know them) can stay approx 100,000,000 than them for the last 65 years across all continents (including yours).
