Verizon catalog reveals Motorola Droid 2, new dumbphones
We knew the original Droid's replacement was coming, but we were never able to nail down the market name with confidence -- until now, it seems. The Droid 2 makes a prominent appearance in an official catalog of Verizon devices leaked to BGR, talking up its 5 megapixel cam, 8GB of onboard storage, and 1GHz processor, positioning it just ever so slightly below the mighty Droid X. Also finding their way into the catalog are the recently-launched Pantech Jest, the self-branded Verizon Salute, and the Intensity II and Gusto both from Samsung, all dumbphones that just add more evidence to the theory that all the good names for mobile devices have already been taken. No date's given for the Droid 2, but we imagine it can't be long now that they're openly talking about it, right?

Motorola's on a roll... 2 Android phones on Verizon in 2 different sizes.
@Michael Scrip
I think that deserves 2 thumbs up.
@Michael Scrip
Glad they're finally owning up to the Droid 2, but my real question is when they're gonna drop the price for the original Droid?
@Michael Scrip
Droid!
@Michael Scrip
Where's the Fascinate?
@Michael Scrip
Android NOT BROKEN!!!
@Kyouto
I bet they drop the price of the original Droid to clear out old stock... but I doubt they'll keep both in stock for very long.
Although... a $99 Droid 1 and a $199 Droid 2 will hit two attractive price points... but how much will the Droid X be at launch?
@Seven2k DROID WINS AGAIN!
@beast101 What does it win?
@Kyouto
Walmart shows the Droid @ $20 with a 2yr contract.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/13082132
@Michael Scrip The X will also be $199. I think Verizon will lower the price of the original Droid by 50, and debut the Droid 2 at $99.
@N900
Sweet. I wonder how much the Droid X will be in October when I can finally upgrade?
@Kyouto Who cares when the original stood has a price drop? It sucks, unless you need the cheapest phone you can get and don't care that much about having a real smartphone, then a price drop doesn't matter, they should just discontinue it
@Michael Scrip droid x should be $199
@SiXiam wow, thats a low price!!!
@Michael Scrip they're gonna overwhelm the non tech savvy consumer
@biddybalboa
My mom bought the original Droid.
Sure she doesn't use it like you or I would... but she does enjoy getting weather updates on her phone... and checking the TMZ app while waiting somewhere.
It definitely gets a lot more use than her old flip-phone, which was ONLY used for phone calls.
@That guy 2
lol. In what universe does the original Droid suck?
@Kyouto Didn't it launch at $199 after contract and rebates and all that jazz? I'm pretty sure it's now $149. Meaningless, I know, but still...
@smoof111 I KNOW!
@N900 The Droid 2 and Droid X will likely both be $199 on a 2 year. They could easily justify $199 for the X with marketing the multimedia features, and justify $199 for the Droid 2 for the physical keyboard. There is no way they are going to price the Droid 2 at $99.
@kent99
another droid, of course!
@smoof111
I can't read that unless I hear it in the same tone as the office depot commercial
@biddybalboa Do I want a bigger screen or a physical keyboard? I don't know! It's too complicated! Please Steve Jobs tell me what I want!
@Michael Scrip
Can't you get the original droid buy one get one free for 149$?
@Kyouto they already have. It went from 299 with 100MIR =199 to 249 w/ 100MIR = 149
@Michael Scrip. The droid x will be launching for 299w/ 100MIR= only 199 very attractive pricing considering its size and ability
@Kyouto
Don't go through verizon retail. I got my droid back in march for $50 through dell. No shipping, no tax, no stupid rebate. And this is for a renewal, not a new activation. Its even cheaaper now. Dell, walmart, and best buy are all much cheaper alternatives than going through verizon.
@N900 What about making the Droid 2 $149.99?
@Kyouto Its already free on Amazon, FYI
@Michael Scrip It won't matter how much any Droid is in October, Windows Phone 7 will be out sometime around then, so there will be no need for Android anymore.
@kent99 an iPhone 4 with fixed reception problems
@Michael Scrip i believe verizon doing an early upgrade option for the droid x on launch date like the iphone 4 did with your upgrade is within this year.
@Kyouto It has started to, but not by much. Give it 2 weeks.
@jmcquesten -- "It won't matter how much any Droid is in October, Windows Phone 7 will be out sometime around then, so there will be no need for Android anymore."
So... WP7 is the Android-killer?
I've heard about these "killers" before. Funny... I've never seen any of them do what they claim... kill their competition...
Nice to know WP7 has fanboys already :)
Debating on waiting for Droid 2 or Samsung Epic.
Leaning towards epic slightly because SUPERAMOLED.
Droid 2 will be a fantastic phone regardless.
@Bearpowers
Epic. Better device and you'll be paying MUCH less on Sprint.
@Bearpowers The Droid 2 is supposed to be Stock 2.2. So if thats true and if Google backs this up like the original one, their will be no bootloader.
So if theres no boot loader and theres Froyo, I'd say go for the Droid 2..
@Bearpowers Well that depends on what you want. IMHO, I believe you should go with Verizon as they have better reception than Sprint and no 4G isn't a deal breaker until it spreads throughout most of America. Besides, with the Droid 2 you get a phone with one of the best call quality and reception, an arguably superior processor, and great build quality. But the Epic is fine too.
@EggoEspada Not to mention Samsung put their shitty UI on it. Stock > Company UI
@Bearpowers I'm leaning towards the Epic as well. The only thing that has any chance of turning me towards the Droid 2 would be lack of Car Home support, a ridiculous price, or lack of root/a modding community, as I absolutely cannot stand that UI Samsung has put on there.
@EggoEspada I havent seen anyhting to suggest that, as far as I know it is also running the Droid X's version of blur.
The only thing I dislike about the Droid is the logo.
@KosherTelephone
It's not ugly, it's manly.... i swear...
OK headline + picture - (reading the full text of the post) = me screaming "What? The Pre Plus is NOT a dumbphone!!!!!" in true nerdy indignance.
(in my head anyway)
@nefnet13 The catalog shows that Verizon knows that the Pre is a smartphone. Sadly, they also think the Kin is a smartphone....
veriozn sure confuse people, droid x or droid 2 is newer?
@techlord
The Droid line is just for all of Verizon's Android phones its not just Motorola although they are the most associated with it due to the first Droid. HTC also make Droid's, the Droid Eris (Basically a Hero) and the Droid Incredible.
@techlord
If people get that easily confused they probably aren't in the market for a smartphone.
@Zachary
Naw. It's just a pretty stupid branding scheme.
@timshundo
How's that? Verizon just calls all of their Android phones by the 'Droid' moniker. Seems pretty simple to me.
