We knew the original
Droid's replacement was coming, but we were never able to nail down the market name with confidence -- until now, it seems. The Droid 2 makes a prominent appearance in an official catalog of Verizon devices leaked to
BGR, talking up its 5 megapixel cam, 8GB of onboard storage, and 1GHz processor, positioning it just ever so slightly below the mighty
Droid X. Also finding their way into the catalog are the recently-launched
Pantech Jest, the self-branded Verizon Salute, and the Intensity II and Gusto both from Samsung, all dumbphones that just add more evidence to the theory that all the good names for mobile devices have already been taken. No date's given for the Droid 2, but we imagine it can't be long now that they're openly talking about it, right?
If the x has a signed bootloader then expect the Droid 2 to have one as well. IMHO its not a deal breaker for me because I bet all manufacturers will all follow suit. I just want root access and I'm happy with it. Everytime Verizon rolls out anupdate its like a big deal and they been good on updating android devices.
Droid 2 would be the perfect phone for me.
But there are so many uncertain factors. :(
Is it coming to my phone company? Fucking exclusives!!!!
Hell is it even coming to my country? If so ...
When? Next year? ><
Looks like I'm stuck with getting the Desire.
While I'm glad they've officially announced the Droid 2, I have yet to see information that discusses the actual technical differences between the Droid X and the Droid 2 (other than of course the form factor). The Droid X is just too big for normal humans IMHO, but I do love the specs (excepting of course the encrypted bootloader). If the bootloader is cracked by the time this comes out or is not encrypted and the underlying hardware is the same as the Droid X, this will be quite a phone.
Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear some official announcement regarding the Samsung Fascinate (Galaxy S), as that's very likely gonna be my next phone (pretty equal to the Droid X hardware wise, better screen, and its already rooted).
Featurephone featurephone featurephone featurephone.
How fucking hard is it for Engadget *not* to sound like a bunch of condescending douche bags?
@deedeedee (obviously typed on an iPhone keyboard)
Not gonna lie. Those droids, blackberries, and palms all together make a damn fine looking lineup. As a current Tour owner who isn't necessarily set on jumping ship at my next contract but has also found a lot of things he likes in android and webos.....I'm gonna have a tough time deciding.
I love my Droid, but the one thing I am not looking forward to is learning the new button layout when I upgrade. Seriously, can we get some standardization on the layout of the soft buttons on the front of Android phones.
WHERE IS THE SAMSUNG FASCINATE?
Why is there no information about this phone available? This is getting maddening.
@MiddleFinger
Why are you here? Oh right, to be a little bitch and trash talk, what iFans do best. What, don't like some of your own medicine?
@HighestRanked2
You mean like the icrap and its faulty antennae design, and the $30 bumpers that cost 50 cents to make.
Enough with the android news. It gets old. Blah blah blah..... Haha fandroids...
@Boboso1987
stfu
@MiddleFinger I bet coming up with that response must have hurt your brain.
@HighestRanked2
LOL, sales figures, how predictable. You think you're in a club by owning an iFail? Oh right, the swindled by Steve Jobs club.
Okay I was torn at first. X or 2 but no keyboard is a dealbreaker for me. I must have and since the droid2 is only slightly less impressive I'll take the hit for it. Oh and I'm probably going to bestbuy this time bird in hand and all
@HighestRanked2 sure they are. Moron. Does high school start soon? U really need that diploma.
So if its a notch below the Droid X, Engadget's review score will be a 6 obv.
the Palm Pre appears as a tribute to George A Romero
@deedeedee
Kinda hard to do that on an iPhone from that date (hint, iPhone launched on 062907 didn't have 3G, only EDGE
I dont know a single person who uses a Droid that is unhappy with it. Seems like a pretty good unit.

HTC better start leaking something pretty soon, or they're going to lose a hefty portion of market share amongst Verizon users. Verizon customer logs onto the website right now, and they only have the choice to backorder the Incredible, or to the buy the Imagio or Ozone(HA!).
HTC needs to get their shit together, leak some info on their own, or I'm picking up a Droid 2 on launch day. They don't even have to leak the info directly, just submit to the FCC and let the bloggers do the rest. Typical lead time for HTC from FCC to release is 4 months, and we've got NOTHIN.
HTC user since 2004.
