Acer said to be launching 7-, 10-inch Android tablets before the end of the year
Acer's already offered some indication that it planned to launch at least one Android-based tablet before the end of the year, and it looks like we're starting to get few more tidbits of information. According to DigiTimes (reasonably reliable when it comes to Acer rumors), the company is planning to launch both 7-inch and 10-inch tablets sometime in the fourth quarter of this year, both of which will reportedly be ARM-based and run Android 2.2 (complete with Flash support_. Details are otherwise still pretty light, but DigiTimes is backing up earlier talk that Acer's looking to partner with mobile carriers on the devices, which we presume means they'll both at least have a 3G option.

Sexy! (The tablet, not the guy.)
@MBN
why are you commenting on that guy's sexiness? ;P
Isn't this what everybody have been saying since last year?
hell yes i want it ,give me some android 2.2 on that with extra cheese,mustard on bread,yum yum,it will taste so good!
I have a 3gs and I would still sooner buy this over the ipad. Not because this device in revolutionary really., more because the ipad just sucks
I was one of the many who was saddened by the demise of the Courier. The fact that many manufacturers are planning on releasing tablets in this size is great, but for me it's going to be all about the OS. I'm a die hard Windows fan but don't think it'll be good for a tablet, at least not natively. Note I don't mean a tablet PC, I'm referring to these new smaller devices. How likely are we to see the Courier's 'PageStream' OS be replicated in some form on these devices? Are we likely to see it as an Android or even a Windows app?
Put PageStream onto this with a decent hires active digitiser, reasonable amount of memory, web enabled and I'd be hooked. I don't want a full blown PC in tablet form ... I want a digital notebook to replace the paper I carry around with me. Hell, I'd even buy an iPad if it had PageStream like UI.
Tablets are tablets - it's all going to be in the UI. First to release a decent paper-killing application will reap the reward.
Yawn.......
Call me when the prices reach the level of netbooks!
@Coach George
...so you want the prices to be higher? The cheap-o tablets sell for
@joshualyon No, I want a quality tablet with a quality touch screen and processor for $300.00. I also want a 64GB+ SSD, 4Gig ram etc. I want something that is more than the Chinese junk that is out now on ebay. I would prefer either Ubuntu or Win7 on the tablet and not the current android offerings. I do not want a big phone.
)*...
I don't think Android on a tablet would work to well. WP7S and WebOS seem to be the OS's that will compete and the tablet stage.
@mchapple
Why ? and Why would WinPho7 or WebOS be better suited to a tablet ?
I'd defiantly buy an Android tablet. Especially with something better then 1.6.
Looks promising!
Is it LCD or AMOLED? Call me crazy but I'm no longer interested in any future LCD based tablet/device now that I've seen video with true black levels.
But will he find who framed Roger Rabbit?
pr0nTab
What the hell do all you kids want tablets for anyways? You're all calling out small issues, Android 2.1 not 2.2, soso resolution,LCD not Amoled, too much bezel, but you won't be buying one regardless.
pfffyle, had the right idea, why? Can anyone tell me why?
@Spaceshipped its an appliance device. There is a reason these things are priced really cheap. Think of these as a Walkman to a boom box. Or a netbook to a full on laptop. They provide specific uses. In my case I want an Android tablet so I can take all my Dell/HP/Lexmark/Samsung service manuals with me. When you consider how thick netbooks are to slate devices. That portability alone makes it way more useful then toting around a netbook.
@John Doe
That wasn't my point.
You want a tablet to carry around .pdf manuals? Then what's stopping you? There's dozens of tablets Android and otherwise that can open .pdfs.
My point was that we've got dozens of commenters complaining about a device they have no plans to invest in, whether it has an AMOLED screen, Android 2.2 or the wealth of other insignificant changes being proposed.
Let's see, take a $299 netbook, subtract $10 for the W7 license, $40 for the intel CPU, $20 for the keyboard. Add $10 for the ARM chip, $100 for a decent LCD ($200 for AMOLED), $10 for the bigger battery. Hmm, looks like Acer has to sell it for $349 to $449. Oh crap, Apple just cut the base price of the iPad to $329 -- LOL!
This isn't happening. Acer can't fake the customers with configurations of cheaper make. Cheaper manufacturing costs make them cost friendly but suck in performance. They can't do it. Atleast for the tablet market, it would a big outcried NO.
*waits patiently*
I was reading the other week about how the analyst were worried that the ipad would cannibalize the sells of existing Apple laptops and the iMac line. No such thing, yet. So now you know why Apple didn't make the ipad as kick ass as you know they could have. It boils down to dollars and cents.
Now, do you really think you're going to get a low price High performance tablet from MS(well, their partners) that is not only good for media creation but consumption? I don't think so.
They way I see it, the closer you get to creating a slate/tablet whatever with the all encompassing traits of a full featured laptop you've done nothing but RECREATE the damn laptop in a slate form factor.
Hell, you might as well go buy a fucking toshiba convertible pc ad stop waiting with baited breath for some magical ass windows tablet.
Just my 2 cents
Acer....This is why we can't have nice things.
The money is waiting guys. Someone just needs to put out a 10" Android Tablet and I'm there.
@deedeedee Try again. I know several dozen people who are patiently waiting on an Android tablet. None of these are remotely interested in an iFad and its locked down, can't load **** through anything other then iTunes, wanna be magical but is, marketing.
You see there are plenty of people out there who aren't Apple cattle who will buy ANYTHING Apple puts out. Frankly the iFad is going to run into the same problem the God Phone is starting to see. One phone manufacture against an industry will not win long term. Ditto with the iFad. You focus on the 6 months. Look 2 years down the road where Apple is releasing new hardware once per year and we are seeing Android devices come out on a quarterly basis from a half dozen different companies where you have tons of choices and with Apple....you may have a defective product and nothing else to go to. Enjoy being locked in....cattle.
Win7 slate, I want Win7 slate. Oh Microsoft, where art thou?
@deedeedee
Have you held an iPad? Those things are heavy! And they have a huge border around the screen... the big things it has going for it are large capacitive screen and (the illusion of) thin.
@John Doe
If it was that easy to do, little girls (and Acer) would have done it by now. You rant about Apple's closed system and yet you expect the competition to match all the features and beat the price. Good luck with that pipe dream.
@deedeedee
Your fucking out. I'm fucking in. Agree?
Waiting for the JooJooTwo.
@John Doe: I bow to the amazingly uncattlelike logic of your heroically independent thinking!
I want let you guys know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VlQM95MD_I , you can see why windows 7 slate is COMPLETELY FAILED!
@GAM3TAG
Fail? It haven't even release yet.
Danny Devito works for Acer now.
I like the hardware form factor a lot reminds me of the kindle but with Android. Which would be awesome.
Touch screen pixel Qi display, android 2.2+, forward facing camera, 5-8mp camera on back with video capture up to 720p, accelerometer, physical keyboard on the bottom similar to kindle, onboard 16-32gb ssd, SD card expansion, 3.5 headphone jack, HDMI out, usb mini b, tegra 2 clocked at 1ghz, 512mb to 1gb of ram, well made custom android skin and this thing could be amazing. Then again this is idealistic and probably will never be built to these specifications.
One can hope. (also I know about the Notion Ink Adam, thats cool too)
@John Get a life and call it by its real name ya sissy
@joshualyon dam u must be weak cause its light 4 me and im 14... aint no football star either. and it has the border so u can hold it without messing with the touchscreen.
Agreed. It really doest bother me if Google, Windows start to bloat the Market with this form factor. At the end of the day, Apple has the advertising, the mind share and the know-how to keep iPad afloat.
The only people genuinely interested in Android tablets will a) geeks and Apple dislikers b) current android users familiar with the platform. For the rest of the World-there is iPad.
