Hulu Plus launches on PS3, exclusive to Sony's console through 2010
The Sony Defense Force has reason to celebrate today, as the circle is now complete -- where Netflix HD once spited PS3 for Xbox 360, today Hulu Plus has chosen the PlayStation for limited console exclusivity through the end of the year. Today, "a select group" of PlayStation Plus subscribers can download the Hulu Plus app and start watching immediately, while regular ol' paying members can ask nicely (via the same app) and wait patiently for the privilege of shelling out an additional $10 a month. Those who aren't dropping $50 a year on PlayStation Plus aren't entirely out of luck, they'll just have to wait till the end of the preview period to get their Hulu on. Press release after the break, more info at the official PlayStation.Blog.
PlayStation®3 System the First and Only Console to Offer Hulu Plus™ in 2010
Hulu Plus™ preview available today on PlayStation 3 to select PlayStation®Plus members; Release of Hulu Plus available to all PlayStation 3 owners in the United States in the coming months
FOSTER CITY, Calif., July 14 /PRNewswire/ - Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) and Hulu™, an online video service offering an expanded selection of television shows and movies, announced that the Hulu Plus™ preview will begin today on the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system in the United States with the consumer release of Hulu Plus available to all PS3 owners set to occur in the coming months. PS3 is the first and only console with dedicated gaming functionality that will offer Hulu Plus in 2010. Hulu Plus will deliver a library of high-definition (HD) content including full seasons of popular TV shows and blockbuster movies from nearly 150 leading content companies. Content on Hulu Plus is complementary to the more than 23,000 movies and TV episodes already available on the PlayStation®Store.
"We are delighted to offer the Hulu Plus preview starting today on PlayStation 3 and that PlayStation 3 will be the only console to offer Hulu Plus in 2010," said Jack Tretton, president and chief executive officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC. "The combination of Hulu's premium video library and PlayStation®Network's expanding game and video catalogue further cements PlayStation 3 as the industry's best entertainment device for all of your content experiences from games, TV shows and movies to live sports, original content and 3D."
Starting today, a select group of PlayStation®Plus subscribers will gain access to a preview version of Hulu Plus for an additional $9.99 per month. All PlayStation Plus subscribers may download the free Hulu Plus application and, within it, request an invitation to the exclusive preview.
General availability of Hulu Plus in the United States is expected in the coming months on the PS3 computer entertainment system and additional Sony Electronics Internet-connected entertainment devices, including select BRAVIA® TVs and Blu-ray™ Disc players.

And exactly how do you expect Hulu Plus to be better on the Xbox 360? Just because you pay for Xbox Live Gold doesn't automatically make it better than PSN. Most games on PSN run on dedicated servers while most games on Xbox Live Gold run on more laggy and less secure P2P servers. Not to mention you will be shelling out $170 just to stream content for one year, compared to $120 on PSN. It's sad that you have to diss a service because it's free and offers some of the same basic features as a subscription-based service.
@lukewind
Being required to pay $50 a year first before you can use Netflix on 360 is better? How? When I look at XBL all I see is idiots paying $50 a year so that Microsoft can shamelessly serve you advertising video's of new games, a failbook App, and twitter. Adding insult to injury by veiling the true price of down-loadable content by using "Microsoft Points".
Microsoft conned you Xbox idiots into buying a piece of hardware with a 60% failure rate, nickel and dimed you for wifi, rechargeable battery packs, and milked you dry charging you $180+ for a 120GB HD.
All so you can play Halo 3?
Whatever, I'll keep my PSN, Blue-Rays and Playon. thanks.

*gives Kenny Fn Powers a hi5*
I just don't understand this. If I subscribe Playstation Plus is Hulu Plus Free or do I have to pay for Hulu Plus, plus Playstation Plus and oh yeah put up with ads for all the trouble?
@malexandria1
Hulu+ is not free in any cercumstances.
@Kenny Fn Powers Are you really that dumb? I have nothing against the PS3. I own one. But the PSN service is a joke compared to XBL. The PSN version of HULU is not gonna support parties, or queuing, unless Sony gets off their butt and makes it happen.
You can be a die hard fanboy all you like, but those of us who live in reality and are over the mental age of 15 understand when something needs improvement. Your arguments hold no water at all.
Rechargeable battery packs are a way better way to play. I don't have to plug in my controller if it is about to die. I have the option of swapping out the battery(11 bucks, dear god thats so expensive!!!), or putting in AA's . Obviously you lack the intelligence to understand why this is better. Plus if the battery ever goes bad, which does happen on PS3 controllers, you need a new controller. So much for your theory there huh pal.
There is no room in gaming for idiots like yourself...grow up buddy.
P.s. I have never had a red ring, and the fail rate was more like 30%, but at least MS acknowledged it and paid for their mistake.
@lukewind
Really? Your gonna retort by defending rechargeable battery "upgrades" and a lame ass party view feature most people could care less about?
Here's a little story about my ps3. I've had it since launch and never had to replace a thing. Isn't that remarkable? I lol'd that you think even a 30% failure rate is acceptable. That's how stupid you are.
@Tothamax
Its sounds better because they are adding party support. I watch movies through netfix with friends all the time. The PSN version does not do this. The Hulu app for XBL will support this.
Laggy servers...You must be joking? You realize that this so called lag is non-existent in most well coded games. There are still dedicated servers, but only for games that need them. I play tons online and run into very little lag. Obviously you have never been on XBL.
I have run into just as much lag on PSN as I ever have on XBL. And at least on XBL people are actually talking. Where is cross game chat. Hell where is even a decent chat client.
You can complain about price all you want, but as long as XBL continues to grow with new features, most of which you glossed over quite well, I will gladly pay a meager 50 bucks a year. What the hell has PSN added in the last 4 years....Home?...the butt of every online community joke since its launch...or beta...or whatever that disaster has become.
Why do you think Lan centers shun PS3's. Most don't even carry one PS3, because the community is small compared to XBL. No matter what BS stats they gave at E3. Its sad that you guys believe this stuff. Microsoft has done some stupid things with Xbox, and I can admit that, too bad you are stuck with Sony's member shoved up your backside. Check me out online PSN: Wideguy
Why HULU? I don't stream HULU for one thing they play too many commercials on their sites and ADS. It's a waist of money and time for me. I will not be getting HULU. I will continue to use my NETFLIX thanks but no thanks HULU.
Good for Sony...but I think Netflix was a bigger win for M$.
I'm not going to get into the whole console debate but I will say that it is another nice feature for PS3 owners. Good job Sony!
