iOS 4.1 seeded to developers (updated)
The first update to iOS 4.0 is jumping all the way up a full tenth of a point to 4.1, and it's now available for those of you signed up for Apple's iPhone Developers Program. It looks like there are major changes to Game Center (which has yet to launch) in this build, but otherwise, we're not sure what's up just yet -- and no, as far as we can tell, there's no iPad support here. Stay tuned!
Update: So we're definitely noticing some differences. The signal bars are, in fact, larger in the new OS, and we're seeing fewer bars on our 4.1 device when compared to a standard 4.0 iPhone 4 (see the image after the break)... which is pretty much exactly what Apple said would happen. We're testing now and will report back what we find!

@drakie please, count all posts about froyo... which is...oh yeah;a 2.x upgrade...
@BrookLynnsFinest
Oh, I'm so, so sorry. Here.
RARH RAUGH APPLE SUXORZ!!!1 Who would want to buy a broken crippled thing with a pee screen?!!1 My Google and Microsoft products are so much more awesome and better!!!!!!!!!!!!
There, is that better? That is apparently what I was really thinking after all. I mean, obviously that's what I really meant, even though I've never said anything remotely like that.
@Dafrety
Yeah but come on 4.1
Thats not a major release, thus no breaking news worthy.
Its worse on Android 1.1 - 1.9 and 2.1 2.2
with all the same discussion on which phone will get this minor update or not.
Really who cares, should you?

@drakie
I agree that this isn't breaking news, but it's definitely worth a mention. When the final version is available to everyone, that would be more suitable as breaking news.
@Dafrety
wait -- was his post deleted? you mean engadget's finally deleting posts _other_ than those criticizing them or apple?
Downloading now!
@MoonWalkerCTE
Good 'ole 4.0 must have blew it somehow.
@MoonWalkerCTE
Installing as I write this!
@MoonWalkerCTE

@a dumb cat
Android 1.5 to 1.6 on X, Y & Z handsets.
Android 2.1 to 2.2 on X, Y & Z handsets.
Don't like these sorts of stories, don't click them especially if it's only to whine.
Internet, 67% whiners since 2007!
@a dumb cat It had a stylus...
@MoonWalkerCTE
This means a jailbreak soon!
@cromwelld
W**king as I write this!
@MoonWalkerCTE
Seriously, with the iPhone news. Cmon.
Imagine if apple had TWO phones.
@Wolfticket
Walking?
@MoonWalkerCTE
Please tell me if they fixed the iPhone 3G with this....because between throwing my iPhone 3G 3 stories down to concrete, or installing iOS 4.....I wish I had thrown it.....
@Gooch818
Yeah, no joke! My 3G is S-L-O-W, and frustrating me to no end. I was onboard with 4, but I am really wishing my company wasn't hitched to ATT right about now....
@HighestRanked2
If they cannot complain in the relevant article then where else shall they complain?
You're possibly the 50th person who's posted that exact same response. Eventually, it grows less clever. Also, so help me if anyone posts that engadget.com/exclude/apple link I'm going to verbally rip into them too.
More on topic, how does it feel to know that 4.1 simply stops lying to the customer rather than fix the PHYSICAL signal issue?
@MoonWalkerCTE Uhm why is my comment downranked?
@MoonWalkerCTE And now it's neutral.. WTF?!
What about the proximity sensor issues? For me this is more of a problem than the reception. Could you please report on that?
@Mike10010100
I think I'd rather be lied to than have to stare AT&T's network in the face and see the fail.
@MoonWalkerCTE your comment was in an area with bad reception.
@Failbait
You mean like the iPhone 4 and the 3GS?
@MoonWalkerCTE
Big question is, how does the death grip workout? Yes, I know it's a h/w issue and this fix can't do much, but I want to know if Apple's response can be invalidated.
PS : Those bitching about the post, eff off. I don't have an iphone 4 and don't plan to get one, but this is pretty big news.
@MoonWalkerCTE it doesnt fix the antennas issue!

@Psyclotr0n You're a funny dude!
@MoonWalkerCTE
Now people will just complain about how low it shows their signal. Think about it, you think you have 5 bars at home, and now you get 2-3, you'd be pretty ticked.
Just like when people talked about the 3G issues with the original iPhone 3G, so Apple made it basically show 5 bars all the time.
@Gooch818 I went back to 3.1.3 on my 3G. I couldn't take it any more. There was no way Apple should have allowed 4.0 on a 3G.
whats ios4? is that what apple is calling the phone OS, in an attempt to make a false perception to their fanboy customers that their OS is anything more than something that should be on a phone, so that when the dumbasses buy an ipad, they think its a computer when its really just a bigger ipod?
@statickeith Idon't own an iPhone, I never will. BUT, For those people that bought the iPhone 4, APPLE SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO THEM FOR WASTING THEIR MONEY! THEY'RE TOO STUBBORN AND THINK THAT THE iPHONE 4 IS THE BEST! BUT ITS NOT!

Android FTW
All you hipster doofus iPhone owners. How I hate, loathe, detest and despise you!!! You should all get Android phones. It is so awesome. If you don't believe me listen to this:-
-My Android phone has increased my charm and charisma by 1000 points while simultaneously reducing my damage taken by 1000 points.
-It has increased the size of my member. In fact it is so huge now that you
can see it from outer space.
-It has increased my intellect so much that now I can come up with such scintillating and cerebral pieces of insults such as 'iSheep', or 'you suck Jobs dick'.
In conclusion, did I mention I hate you? I HATE YOU. Oh, I hate you so much it hurts. Yes nothing gives me more pleasure than to write condescending remarks on iPhone related articles and calling you losers. Are you listening … you losers?
Signed,
The Super Awesome Android Dude
@statickeith
First... You admit your biased, and then you bash it? I am not sure how to react to that, but I think you are overreacting. Many of those that bought the iPhone 4 have not experienced the 'Death Grip' problem.
iVerizon iS iReleasing iThe iDroidX iTomorrow...
Am I speaking your language now iSheep?
@JojoMojo
Well this comment train has devolved into name-calling and insults.
Truly sad, people.
They do. 3, 3GS & 4 ;)
@Mike10010100
plus he's just copying and pasting that lame "parody" from yesterday
@Neotyguy40 may be there are just a few of them. Most people that I know who own an iPhone 4 HAVE the problem and they're pissed off. But apple is refusing to admit that the design of the iPhone 4 is the flaw. Thats what pisses me off. If they made a mistake, they should apologize. They just dont admit that the flaw exists. Anssi Vanjoki admitted that the Nokia N97 was a disappointment and that they would not hurry up like that when making products. Steve Jobs should prolly do that too.
@JojoMojo Dude, You think Im an apple fanboy?! GEEZ! I FREAKIN' OWN AN EVO 4G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ANDROID FTW!
BUT, I just wanted Apple to apologize to people that bought the iPhone 4 coz it had the antenna issue. Apple doesnt admit that the flaw is within the design and that s what really pisses me off. If Nokia, HTC, Motorola did that tomorrow, I'd be pissed at them. (But I know they wont do that coz they are better than Apple!) PEACE!
@HighestRanked2
"Hey hey hey! It's my #1 Engadget fan, Mike the cat! Another day another HighestRanked comment stalk eh buddy?"
Hey hey hey! You posted on the first comment page of an article, idiot! Not exactly difficult to see!
But while we're on the subject, I'm always glad to debunk your bogus claims!
"Anyhow, yeah thanks for reminding me about that URL. So for all you iHaters out there, go to this link to no longer see Apple news:"
You're kidding me, right? I WANT to see Apple news. In fact, when 4.1 is released to THE PUBLIC, I want to know as soon as possible!
But this? Developers are getting an update. The only thing found so far is that the signal bars are bigger and not lying to the customer any more. Rofl.
This is why I've been saying that there needs to be an apple specific section to this site. They have a Mobile, HD, Alt, etc. So why not an Apple? Keeps the fluff out of the main article stream while keeping the relevant and major stuff in!
"Not that any iHater is actually going to use it. Your kind, Mike, are the type of people that seem to love sulking in obsessive self-imagined infatuated hate over all things Apple and can't let any opportunity to vent rage at it slip by."
"Your kind" Rofl. I love how you lump people into these little groups in your head. Probably the only way you can deal with life. I own an iPod Touch 64 gig, am extremely happy with it, and wouldn't trade it for any other music player. Know why? Because it's not trying to be anything more than it claims to be. It's an excellent music player, runs apps, and browses the web. In other words, it's the perfect media consumption toy. But when people buy a flawed product by the millions, tell people (you've been doing this recently) that everything will be fixed in a software update, and passive aggressively insult people, I tend to get a little angry. Try and fit that fact into your iHater description.
"As for people complaining, well well, you kittens let common sense slip by too much. The only way to have less articles of the kind you hate is by not creating demand for them. Or do you not realize how blogs work? Clicking on the article and bitching only makes the matter worse."
So let's see. Common sense seems to elude you also. There was great demand for articles slamming Apple, as shown by the number of comments on each. So we should hopefully be getting more of those, yes?
Suggest a place to complain other than inside of a relevant article. "Hey, I know this article is about new binoculars, but I'd like to complain about the large amount of Apple updates."
"Suddenly other people have clicked too and left replies to your comment and have generated more traffic, and so on. Here, let me give you a yarn ball to make you feel better."
There goes that passive-aggressive taunting again. Completely irrelevant to your point and makes you look like a giant prick. Well, more than usual that is.
"Lastly, 4.1 is lying because... it may or may not include Game Center? Silly kitty."
Awww when you're not being passive aggressive you're completely misreading comments. How cute. Seriously, finish high school and then maybe you can have the reading comprehension skills of everyone else on Engadget. I said that 4.1 simply stops lying about SIGNAL issues, but does nothing to address the PHYSICAL problem.
@Slayer84 Fail is NOT a noun. What's wrong with you people? Stop using it as such. Languages have guidelines so the rest of us can comprehend one another. What on Earth does Fail look like?
@politicalslug

@Processing If it is because people don't believe I'm a developer ask me any way to prove it and I will.
@HighestRanked2
And aren't you just perpetuating the cycle by posting in here? Dumbass...
@Gooch818 mine was being slow too so i used red snow to "jailbreak" & it's really fast now no but it was SLOW with the regular 4.0
just don't install cydia cause then you wont be able to send MMS
heres the link it only took me like 5 minutes:http://lifehacker.com/5574507/how-to-enable-multitasking-and-background-wallpaper-on-your-iphone-3g-and-2nd-gen-ipod-touch
oh and it'll let you use multi-tasking! ;D
@JojoMojo Hee hee... that's too freakin' funny. Unfortunately, some of the others don't understand the humor in it. And I'm an iPhone guy! Good show.
@statickeith
Go check put Consumer Reports. THEY gave the iPhone 4 and 3 GS #1 and 2 ranking. Every other consumer survey as well does the same.
It's not just Apple saying it's the best.
@Mike10010100
You're missing the point. For many people the iPhone 4 is better than what they had before - all things considered. It may well be flawed, but I have the phone and I am not suffering any downside. I am sure I am not the only one.
No devise is for everyone. If it doesn't fit your needs don't buy it. The iPhone 4 is a flawed product in the sane way the iPad is. If you love it great. If you hate it, buy something else.
In any case, CR still rates the 3GS right behind the iPhone 4 in overall ranking in their smartphone ratings. So if you like the apps, the 3GS is an option.
If you want Android, go get it. It just doesn't make sense to equate the iPhone antenna issue to WMD in Iraq or whatever... or to presume that anyone who bought the iPhone 4 doesn't care about making phone calls or whatever you're trying to prove.
Just move on.... this phone is NOT for you! It's OK.
