Android Market now has 100,000 apps, passes 1 billion download mark (update: Google says 70K)
Well, it may not come as a huge surprise considering all the steam Android's picked up over the past few years, but it's a landmark nonetheless: according to AndroLib's data, the Market now has 100,000 apps available for download. It's also interesting to note that it took just under three months to get from 50,000 to the 100,000 mark. An even more impressive number, however, is the fact that over one billion applications have been downloaded. While it's not clear if this number includes app updates or not, the number is massive either way, and they're growing pretty steeply each month. AndroLib's data also notes that over 14,000 applications became available during the month of June, and over 10,000 have appeared already in July. Hit up the source links for more stats, and a chance to see the numbers update in real time.
[Thanks, Eggo]
Update: By Google's official count, they've only just passed 70,000; this isn't the first time AndroLib and Google have had different numbers, so we're figuring the discrepancy might be thanks to the international Markets. More on this as we get it.

I have 48 quality apps that I use regularly.
100000? Holy smackrels that was fast!
any of the apps of quality?
everything i see sucks
@(Unverified) All of your comments I see suck.
@rhomaion
like the word suck i see
that's because you have seen more cock ends than weekends
where are the milestone timeframe comparisions? How long did it take the evil empire in Cupertino? It seems to me Android is growing faster.
IM REAL HAPPY FOR YOU ANDROID AND IMMA LET YOU FINNISH BUT APPLE PASSED THAT MILESTONE WAY FASTER WITH ONLY ONE PHONE.
And how many NICE apps now, is it up to 15? 20? I thought you fandroids said that the number of apps didn't matter?
This is indeed a great milestone for Android!
All of this bickering in this thread and I want to know how many people have installed even 1,000 apps to either and iPhone or Android phone. #'s and variety are great but there are more apps on both platforms than anyone needs.
In fact, for those touting the better quality apps in the app store please start listing them so I can develop them on Android and make money. Face it, Android's here to stay and it's only gonna get better. (and even though I am growing to hate apple and what it stands for, I realize it's not going away anytime soon either)

Pulls my android penis out and pee's on Apple
Not according to Google... they're saying closer to 70,000. I imagine this data is also comprised of non-market apps. Just a guess...
Either way - more than enough for me.

about 99,990 shit apps
Love my Nexus one, but MAN, it /really/ needs some filters in the marketplace. Just a filter to remove anyone with an app that has the words "sexy/girl/asian' in the header would help reduce the clutter a huge amount as it DOES have alot of dross. I'm looking forward to the new app development tools, but it'll obviously help fill the amount of rubbish apps about.
Better filters to include/exclude apps, just a /bit/ of policing to make sure things like 'sexy/asian/girl/wallpapers' don't end up in the Productivity/Tools sections, and it'll look alot clearer.
That graph showing such a steep rise up looks neat, but the % of 'copy/paste/change rss feed/girl'? Far too high. Would like to see by unique developer for perhaps a bit more accurate display.
Congrats Android, sick of hearing "how many of those apps are farts" etc but how many apps in the Apple market are just web apps? (like engaget app) that allow you to see one particular web page, as the iphone doesn't offer a full web experience like you get on Android, Winmo etc. So if another phone OS can offer the full web experience it gets 2 billion apps by default?? just saying...
@wallywolf how does the iphone not offer a "full web experience?" please tell me you dont mean flash... if you do.. then you mean flash!
"While it's not clear if this number includes app updates or not"
No, it's not about app updates, but more about this:
"Hmm this sounds interesting." (download #1)
"Hell, this is shit!" (uninstall)
"Oh this one must be better." (download #2)
"WTF?!" (uninstall)
"This time it'd better be good..." (download #3)
"What the... OK, let's try another." (uninstall)
[So it goes on]
Well that's mostly what I felt like with my Android days. Contributes a big bunch of download counts just for one single actually useful (not necessarily polished) app.
OK. Done with bitching. Seriously the 100K apps could be a big problem. Because A) No one does any quality control to Android Market B) Free submission lures people spam it with cheap, fast-brewed stuff C) As I see the Android Market doesn't offer a efficient app searching/sorting method, people get quickly drowned by HUGE amounts of mostly repetitive apps
Quality, man, quality. That's the priority you've got to consider when you get out of infancy.
Comparing the Android App Market to the Apple's App Store is like comparing Walmart to Target.
Sure both have similar merchandise whereas Walmart has more goods but tons of cheap goods and not many high quality goods.
@darksharpie, no not talking flash, don't even want to go there, Just saying, how many apps in appleland are nothing more than a portal to see a web page properly.
I am pretty sure the important milestone here is not the amount of apps in the store but the 1 billion downloaded. We all know people aren't downloading every countries live wallpaper app. But they are downloading other stuff and a lot of it. Keep rolling google, they should hit the 2 billion mark in half the time.
People who are having difficulty using the marketplace and want a pc based, integrated solution, do yourselves a favour and use AppBrain. With the Fast Web Installer app on the phone, any free applications that you want to install are pushed from the desktop to the phone over the air. Paid apps bounce off the market for you to buy in the normal way when you sync the phone with AppBrain (OTA). All really simple.
The Apps are easier to search for and you can create lists of apps you may be interested in during your searches for future review. When you want to install them it is easy. I think Google should just buy this, polish a little and add better advanced search capability to the site (that is their area of expertise after all ...) and dish it up as part of the new Marketplace.
With reference to Games and ratio of purchases on the Android Marketplace, Froyo goes a long way to relieving the bottleneck for app storage. If I can install to sd card I will buy many more quality applications. Until I get that release I will not be likely to download a number of large games that I have to keep uninstalling to make way for new apps. In a few months time there will be a much higher proportion of Android devices with apps to sd and any developer who is not getting their content ready to take advantage of it will fall behind their competitors. The other major hurdle is the limited international access to paid apps within the marketplace. This needs to be addressed as a matter of priority to enable a truly functional market.
Android is a coming force and developers need to ready their quality applications to take advantage of it. If you are listening Gameloft (for instance) that would mean putting your apps in the MarketPlace rather than just on your own site so that people can actually find them.
Anyway, things are changing quickly and given a year I think none of these issues will even register.
Yeah, but 60,000 of them are spam apps the rest are fart apps.. The market blows!!!
