Dell Streak very likely coming to AT&T any day now
You may have heard chatter recently that Dell's Streak is destined for AT&T as soon as July 19 -- and now, with a little dot-connecting, we're pretty much on board with that theory. We've just been tipped that on a corporate-owned AT&T store where contractors are in the process of installing new kiosks in the "Smartphones" area of the floor under tight security; they've apparently been made to sign NDAs and a number of employees "are already on the chopping block" for trying to figure out what it is. We suppose it could be something Captivate-related, but considering the level of security here, we think it's something much bigger. Like 5 inches or so, if you catch our drift.

is gonna scare people in the store.
@techlord They should just add TSA security checkpoints at the entrance of the store. those seem just as appropriate.
@techlord Interesting that Engadget considers 5 inches to be "much bigger".
@CRA1G
well they might not want the bigger completions to take away their beloved one.
im totally talking about the iphone here :P
@CRA1G
I need atleast 7. C WUT I DID THAR?? HARDY HAR HAR
@CJisohsocool
you want 7? that might to big for a guy to handle :P
@techlord
Hmmm. This seems to secretive for a Dell product. They are newcomers to the smartphone space after all.
@DefPoet
Oh I can handle it ;)
@CRA1G - Engadget needs those pills I keep reading about in my SPAM folder?
AT&T? Bah!
Call me when it's on a network with reception.
@techlord
Seriously though right, lol? I mean if it is the Streak, Dell give it a rest already and just announce the release date already. Why is it that Apple is the only company making a phone that seems to know how to market......well, I guess the Droid ads are decent too.
@techlord I've been waiting for this for a while. So tempted to buy this unsubsidized.
@XChrisX
Sooo big question:
Samsung Captivate or Dell Streak??
Both will be released next week to AT&T.
Don't give me your EVO, Droid, iPhone responses...
@Elranzer - Zaplatar!
@MrFluffyThing
I'm already annoyed going into a AT&T store whats up with the sign-in book and Being assigned a Salesperson to walk Me through the Place. I Guess I would Appreciate the one on one assistance IF thier People really Knew a Damn thing about the Product and the Services..
@beckhams777 Go with the Epic 4G... unless you love the punishment you receive from the worlds 7th biggest company, AT&T... If someone held a gun to my head and I had to choose, I say shoot me... no but really I would probably lean towards the Samsung since this is Dells soiree.
Besides the 5" screen, there's nothing too special about this phone. Maybe it will be coming out with faster internals which a phone like this deserves.
@SolidSnake Totally agree. Plus not like "Dell" is Apple.. I dont care if people would really care even if they pulled off that whole "secretive" drama.
I hope they come out with a 8 inch version or 10 inch version as well. It'll be awesome.
@slickpaki
7" and 10" streak tablets are supposedly in the works, for early next year.
@beckhams777
i just went and played with the new Samsung Vibrant Galaxy S at T-mobile ... i was very amazed how nice the screen was and it was zippy even on an old edge connection ... it had 2 complete sets of widgets from android and samsung. 16gb of memory ... the galaxy phones are beasts.
As far as we know the Streak is still only running android 1.6.
@CRA1G for a phone it is
@MrFluffyThing They need to install them on the inside of the store after this whole iPhone antenna issue and Android BS (side loading apps) to keep ATT customers from leaving (thats including me, by the way) I am sick of this ATT coporate bullying just because the iPhone lacks features that Android is known for.
@ThinkpaxX200s
If you go into a Corporate Store and you get someone that doesn't know what the hell their doing, they will be gone in 3 months. Thats AT&T policy. When I worked for them I saw 3 people get fired in the first year I was there because they got more than 3 customer complaints. You get 3 in a year your fired. And you wonder why the sales reps hate bad customers.
@DefPoet You know them soooo well.
@ThinkpaxX200s they sign your in so they know how many people are there and (usually) what they are there for. It's just supposed to get people helped quicker
@techlord That's as big as the iPad!
@beckhams777 Captiviate
Samsung
@ThinkpaxX200s Tru dat!
Go big or go home!!!!
Apple I wanted a 4" or bigger IPhone but o well Dell Streak it is since there is no sleek 4.3" HTC on ATT an sprint blows where I live
The Droid X looks sweet minus the dumb lip on the back oooo an it's made by motorola haha crappy crappy crappy, so HTC please release GSM versions of the EVO i don't care if it dosent have WiMax, an just a GSM evo not a EVO 4G cause let's face it even sprint customers don't get a bar of 4g lol, an apple let's go already release a qwerty keyboard version iPhone with a 4" or bigger screen hell call it the iPhone Pro lol
Go Dell Streak! Best of all the High end phones until a GSM HTC EVO or 4.3" iPhone
they should put iphone 4, samsung galaxy in comparison in the store.
@techlord or on this site, that'll suffice
still rocken my palm pre !!!
@Nanosman1994 Well, don't rock it too hard...the screen will twist off the keyboard. :-(
@CRA1G haha so true
@Nanosman1994
THATS WHAT SHE SAID! hahahahaha, never gets old...
@CRA1G
So what your saying, is perhaps, theres a way you shouldn't hold it? Like by the top screen half?
And in Said circumstance, one might proclaim "You're holding it wrong!"
Interesting...
@geekthree Ha ha ha I see what you did there...and no, that's not what I'm saying.
Does anyone else here feel a 5" screen on a cell phone is a bit overkill? Seems like it would NOT fit in a pocket without getting glares from passersby and I doubt many ladies want a phone that big in their purses. Especially the tiny ones they take when they go to bars and clubs.
"So are you happy to see me or is that a Dell Streak in your pocket?"
@VAVA Mk 2 Cargo pants.
@VAVA Mk 2 i have an HD2 and its at 4.3 inches of real estate, and i think the 4.3 is about the sweet spot for screen size for usability as a laptop replacement while traveling, but i also think 5 inches might be even better. Now for ladies with smaller hands i dont think it will catch on, but for the male market, which is still about 65-75% of tech buyers... in the end i def want to use one hands on before dropping 500 on one. Oh and big purses are the thing man, at least with my GF, so real estate in the purse is A-OK with this thing :)
@jonbruc
Can't really wear cargo pants to a suit and tie job, sadly :( I love cargo pants as I hate having things in my pockets but as the lady folk say (my fiance in my case) cargo pants are not good for going to bars or places where you need to look semi dressed.
@akhotch
I agree with you on the 4.3" sweet spot. I get my Droid X tomorrow. And my fiance has a few big purses but when girls got to bars they switch out for those tiny things that like carry a phone and 2 credit cards and gum. Women are picky and I can't carry a 5" screen phone in business slacks or kakhis or even a nice pair of jeans (if you wear cargo jeans, it is time to grow up). But yea my point was 5" phone is too much. Getting into category of a small tablet really.
@VAVA Mk 2
engadget says it fits just fine in their pockets and they like wearing jeans that are emo-skintight
@DefPoet
Hmm well if they say emo skin tight then maybe I should take a look at this. Android and Dell seem cool. My only concern here was if it fit ok in a pair of jeans. My old BB Bold 9000 felt like having a brick on my thigh but hey if Dell made this baby thin enough while being 5" and comfortable phone to use and navigate, then bigger screens are welcome. As long as it feels right, then like everything else in geekdom, ridiculously larger screens welcome!
@VAVA Mk 2 no birth control then LOL in you baby purse...
@VAVA Mk 2
Not at all. Currently I'm in the marketing for a new phone but I also want something that I can browse the web with when I feel to. I've had an iPod Touch for 6 months now and while it's a nice device, web browsing on that 3.5 screen just doesn't cut it for me anymore. Also, I've tried out the iPad for a length of time and while it's great, it's not as portable as a phone. So I've come to the end of the road which I believe is the Dell Streak. It's a portable-MID-smartphone, everything I need.
@VAVA Mk 2 Indeed it is this about 9.9mm which makes it thinner then the 3GS and nearly as this as the iPhone 4. Engadget has a nice review of it where Richard Lai shows that it fits in his jeans and if you are a full suit kid of guy it will fit in the inside pocket of the blazer. Just a thought hope it helps.
http://www.engadget.com/product/dell-streak
@VAVA Mk 2 No, 5" is perfect. In fact, I just had another play at Carphone Warehouse here in Oxford, England. 5" (not 4.X) is perfect for reading eBooks, emails, web pages and more. My ONLY gripe with it (like any such device) is lack of any decent physical keyboard. There are some Bluetooth ones, but they are all of dubious quality and reliability. So, may get an Apple BT keyboard as it's the only quality one - how ironic! (I tried iPhone 4 again too, and whilst the screen is bright, it is way too small for a 2010 model device - and unlike the streak, it has a physical camera shutter release AND a self timer!)
But where is Froyo?
@kamenwati
Agreed. That is why I am getting Droid X and happy to have read it felt thin and great and sturdy in reviews. Just don't want a brick in my jean pocket anymore (for those lol at that inuendo get it out now ;) ) And she always fits her BC first....I make sure of it!!!!! No kids till like a year after wedding!
The droid x can't be rooted. :(
