Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"As someone who doesn't reside in the USA, I was wondering what would be the best way to get internet for my computer in the US for a couple of weeks? If it were Europe I know I'd look for some prepaid data. Is there anything similar offered by American carriers? A MiFi or a data SIM that I can tether from would work, but I'm trying to maintain a tight budget. Help!"
Does anyone else here feel a 5" screen on a cell phone is a bit overkill? Seems like it would NOT fit in a pocket without getting glares from passersby and I doubt many ladies want a phone that big in their purses. Especially the tiny ones they take when they go to bars and clubs.
"So are you happy to see me or is that a Dell Streak in your pocket?"
@VAVA Mk 2 Cargo pants.
@VAVA Mk 2 i have an HD2 and its at 4.3 inches of real estate, and i think the 4.3 is about the sweet spot for screen size for usability as a laptop replacement while traveling, but i also think 5 inches might be even better. Now for ladies with smaller hands i dont think it will catch on, but for the male market, which is still about 65-75% of tech buyers... in the end i def want to use one hands on before dropping 500 on one. Oh and big purses are the thing man, at least with my GF, so real estate in the purse is A-OK with this thing :)
@jonbruc
Can't really wear cargo pants to a suit and tie job, sadly :( I love cargo pants as I hate having things in my pockets but as the lady folk say (my fiance in my case) cargo pants are not good for going to bars or places where you need to look semi dressed.
@akhotch
I agree with you on the 4.3" sweet spot. I get my Droid X tomorrow. And my fiance has a few big purses but when girls got to bars they switch out for those tiny things that like carry a phone and 2 credit cards and gum. Women are picky and I can't carry a 5" screen phone in business slacks or kakhis or even a nice pair of jeans (if you wear cargo jeans, it is time to grow up). But yea my point was 5" phone is too much. Getting into category of a small tablet really.
@VAVA Mk 2
engadget says it fits just fine in their pockets and they like wearing jeans that are emo-skintight
@DefPoet
Hmm well if they say emo skin tight then maybe I should take a look at this. Android and Dell seem cool. My only concern here was if it fit ok in a pair of jeans. My old BB Bold 9000 felt like having a brick on my thigh but hey if Dell made this baby thin enough while being 5" and comfortable phone to use and navigate, then bigger screens are welcome. As long as it feels right, then like everything else in geekdom, ridiculously larger screens welcome!
@VAVA Mk 2 no birth control then LOL in you baby purse...
@VAVA Mk 2
Not at all. Currently I'm in the marketing for a new phone but I also want something that I can browse the web with when I feel to. I've had an iPod Touch for 6 months now and while it's a nice device, web browsing on that 3.5 screen just doesn't cut it for me anymore. Also, I've tried out the iPad for a length of time and while it's great, it's not as portable as a phone. So I've come to the end of the road which I believe is the Dell Streak. It's a portable-MID-smartphone, everything I need.
@VAVA Mk 2 Indeed it is this about 9.9mm which makes it thinner then the 3GS and nearly as this as the iPhone 4. Engadget has a nice review of it where Richard Lai shows that it fits in his jeans and if you are a full suit kid of guy it will fit in the inside pocket of the blazer. Just a thought hope it helps.

@VAVA Mk 2 No, 5" is perfect. In fact, I just had another play at Carphone Warehouse here in Oxford, England. 5" (not 4.X) is perfect for reading eBooks, emails, web pages and more. My ONLY gripe with it (like any such device) is lack of any decent physical keyboard. There are some Bluetooth ones, but they are all of dubious quality and reliability. So, may get an Apple BT keyboard as it's the only quality one - how ironic! (I tried iPhone 4 again too, and whilst the screen is bright, it is way too small for a 2010 model device - and unlike the streak, it has a physical camera shutter release AND a self timer!)
But where is Froyo?
@kamenwati
Agreed. That is why I am getting Droid X and happy to have read it felt thin and great and sturdy in reviews. Just don't want a brick in my jean pocket anymore (for those lol at that inuendo get it out now ;) ) And she always fits her BC first....I make sure of it!!!!! No kids till like a year after wedding!
The droid x can't be rooted. :(
@SolidSnake
Give the hacking community time. If it exists it can be hacked. "If it bleeds, we can kill it."
I say how about a 4 incher? not too big and not too small. I handled an eVo and it appeared huge compared to iphone. Imagine using a 5 incher.
I will do a handson once its available to see what is what.
@enaybee
Saw Evo at Best Buy. Looks big at first but screen size is nice for typing and surfing and thin so fits in pants pocket well :)
@VAVA Mk 2
That's why Dell is calling it a "tablet," not a "cell phone." In addition, the previous Engadget reviewer already showed it could easily fit in a normal sized jeans pocket without too much trouble, and still be able to be taken out.
The review also stated that it's pretty much at the limit of what could be practical for something used as a phone.
So I think it'll be fine.
@paul34
Cool beans
@Oflife I meant to say, "unlike the Streak, it DOESN'T..."
@VAVA Mk 2
the droidx will not be rotted for a very long time yet alone will the boot loader be unlocked so custom roms or kernels can be flashed
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-x-discussion/3330-how-droid-x-locked-down-let-me-tell-you-what-i-know.html
@Oflife
anyone knows any rumors of Froyo on this?
@VAVA Mk 2
take the moto mielstone for an example 8 months after release and the hacking community is no where close. and that phone only had a encrypted bootloader. encrypted bootlader +eFuze on droidx is gonna be a bitch
@beckhams777
Dell has said, at the latest, Q4 this year for FroYo on the Dell Streak.
@DefPoet
Sad face :-(
@VAVA Mk 2 Time to grow up? WTF is with that? I wear cargo pants to work every day. If wearing a noose around my neck to work every day is "growing up" I'll never grow up. There is no way in fucking hell I'll do that.
@VAVA Mk 2 Don't get hooked up words like "smartphone" or "tablet" - the devices are all the same. "Voice calling" is just another feature of portable devices, and it's only a secondary feature at that. People use portable devices more for apps and Internet than voice calling.
@Smedis
Guess I need to start rethinking my lexicon. And while I like cargo pants and shorts to put wallets and phones in you really can't wear em everywhere :(
@VAVA Mk 2 i have this phone its easy to get it in your jeans
