Let the hive mind of Engadget get that for you.
"As someone who doesn't reside in the USA, I was wondering what would be the best way to get internet for my computer in the US for a couple of weeks? If it were Europe I know I'd look for some prepaid data. Is there anything similar offered by American carriers? A MiFi or a data SIM that I can tether from would work, but I'm trying to maintain a tight budget. Help!"
aka makes it look like you have signal... even when you don't
@vstican
Actually, it's pretty much the opposite of that. You'll now have fewer bars more often (more accurate). It in no way fixes the death grip problem though.
@vstican
Actually, the phone does that with it's current version. This update is to show the actual amount of bars you are getting. Which (even Apple has admitted) is less that you now see.
That's a 378MB formula
@vstican
Hidden feature of the OS: Never drops below 1 bar
@epdavies Where is the DL that enlarges the screen, switches the network & installs Froyo?
Quick it's been fifteen minutes without talking about the iPhone make a post about it!!
@BharatiJanta Than*
@vstican It turns your phone into a liar.
@BharatiJanta
Proof that seeing is believing, if they SEE that they have bars even when they touch the sides, they will believe it too.
@vstican I would read up on the update before commenting, obviously you have no clue what the update does. Mines a 579mb update? Wooo!
@BharatiJanta
Lol i know thats what they're tell us... i was just suggesting theyre lying again... can you blame me?
@vstican
BZZT wrong. It's the opposite of that.
@vstican
I dont think Whoopi would appreciate that:
http://tv.gawker.com/5588008/whoopi-goldberg-hated-her-iphone-4-so-much-that-she-destroyed-it
@Scanimal Inc LiePhone 4
@epdavies is it more accurate or just lowering your expectations?
@Son Of a Gun
Sorry, you can't install iOS 2.x anymore.
@vstican
What we need is a FCC to make a mandatory background app that runs on every phone. It will check carrier, signal, location, #of drop calls, and data speed and post in a site where we the customers can compare real world stats by carrier and phone. It does not have to runs at all times but rather randomly. It will not report the phone number of the user so it will be confidential.
@epdavies Fewer Bars more often, wow what an upgrade.
@vstican
exactly.. they hacked something in there to make sure it shows positively for them.
@vstican Yup now instead of seeing 0 bars to a drop call, we will now see 5 bars with a drop call.
@Exile
I wonder how many times it will be to be posted that the update will show LESS bars before everyone actually understands it.
Good thing no one has posted about how it's a logarithmic scale, I suspect a good number of readers' heads would explode.
@vstican
Here's hoping 4.0.1 fixes the JB exploit, dev team needs to release for 4.0, no more pictures, actual softwaretools
@vstican
I have one less bar now - 3GS
@Graham J That would require them to be well informed.
@Seven2k
Whoopi is a T-Mobile schill. She was on the MyTouch commercials.
@vstican
Typical Engadget shit: more apple coverage then the Droid X on its launch day.
Yet when the iPhone 4 launched it was balls to the walls apple coverage...
@vstican As far as I know, the iOS signal meter uses only half of the dynamic range of the antenna signal strength such that anything at the middle of that signal range or higher is called "5 bars"; hence why the death grip affects users who only have less than 5 bars.
In all honesty this is just going to make the problem seem *worse*, not better.
@icase81
money makes you do stupid things...no shes an apple person...believe me i know it for a fact =)
@SiXiam
DroidX what?? Launch to day? Where are the lines of people and excitement in the air?
Well, I'm off... Will start camping outside Apple's store, Copenhagen before the line expands further. Iphone4 launch 28 july. Me want Iphone4 NOW
@Seven2k http://reviews.cnet.com/2722-6452_7-697.html?tag=smallCarouselArea.0
@SiXiam typical complainer. clicks on the post instead of not caring and moving on, instead only to discuss nothing about the topic and complain that no one cares about what you care about.
Engadget needs to make a separate page titled "Free hugs for those who feel their cares are being neglected"
you're silly :0)
@Son Of a Gun
this is an upgrade, not a downgrade.
@vstican
I don't care about how many bars my phone says it has, does this patch indeed fix us iPhone 3G users....i'm not going to continue to cripple my phone with these crappy updates....
@SiXiam
Yes, and do you see how many comments the droid posts are generating? Now take a look at Apple posts. Any Apple posts. Why is that? Aside from many, many people being intrigued by Apple, there is also all the people who come & comment to say there are too many Apple posts. Apple is tops, sorry but that is a fact that even you yourself prove by not being able to restrain yourself from commenting.
@Hyakku,
We all know you love it, you're hear commenting after all.
@epdavies
They should might as well now include a "6th bar"...
@vstican
This is just wonderful. I've now gone from 4 bars at my house to two bars. Thanks apple.
@MoonWalkerCTE
I'm getting 579.3 MB actually
@Son Of a Gun
SCOREBOARD BITCHES!!
@JCerna
Yeah thats what we need. Something else using all the RAM in the background.
@vstican Don't be concerned with what the update does. It just makes the device more magical and revolutionary and changes everything. Again.
I just tried to install the update and the phone crashed. Now I get to restore my phone to factory settings. Thanks for the "Update" Apple.
@jelzx6r636 If you have to restore your phone to factory settings, you blew it. You must have held it wrong.
@Seven2k Whoopi also thinks Mel Gibson is a swell guy. So I'm not sure you want to be parading around her opinions right now.
@Hyakku I wouldn't have thought to check for an update if I didn't see this post
@crawcraw haha g1
@epdavies AnandTech has a more detailed study of 4.0.1:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3821/iphone-4-redux-analyzing-apples-ios-41-signal-fix
@camerafan No, you've gone from 2 bars of actual service with the illusion of 4 bars to 2 bars of service with an honest amount of bars. Not a single thing changed about your service or signal, only what the phone decides to show you.
@Son Of a Gun It's called jailbreak, it can switch your network to tmobile, but then it's tmobile...
