Acer gains ground on HP as ASUS bumps Toshiba out of top five global PC vendors
Did you know that since the inception of the great and glorious PC industry the world leader in shipments has always been an American company? The biggest threat to this hometown hegemony right now looks to be coming from Taiwan, as Gartner's latest figures show significant growth from both Acer and ASUS, with the latter improving its global shipments by a stonking 78.5% between this time last year and now. Acer's ascent was a more modest 31.6%, though the whole PC market has taken a big uptick from 2009 with a 20.7% average growth in shipments. That's meant that even though HP and Dell have registered double-digit growth, both lost market share over that time. Toshiba has similarly had a strong showing, but ASUS' exponential growth has relegated the Japanese company to sixth in the world. That Toshibasus merger isn't looking like such a bad idea now, is it Toshiba?

Ehhhhh...
@hostbot I want the pc in the picture :D
@TheCake
It does look cool. Just wish its color wasn't so horrendous
@hostbot
yeah but Acer bought TI's notebook line which made Acer what it is today, especially since they STILL use the same brands that they did way back when.
I'm just waiting for that PC to transform and start kicking some a$$.
@wemustcontrolpeople Don't buy a Macbook then.
@wemustcontrolpeople
more competition overseas means driven down prices in the states so it's more bang for your buck.
btw, that orange desktop? very expensive..
Wonder what they might name the company if the merger happens, Toshus? or Ashiba? LOL
Holy moly that's an ugly box. Did someone put one of the new Transformers through a car crusher?
That computer looks sooooooo awesome!!!
Where can I get it?
its called the acer predator
@oringal Ohhhhhh Predator, it's the child pornography edition.
@Massive Poop BRBFBI
Acer Sniper FTW !
Why does this not surprise me?
And they wonder why people drool over Apple stuff like crazy..
This thing is awful.. and what's tragic is that none of these tech companies get industrial design.
Awful.
@Bozster
Drooling masses? I don't think so. Speaking of marketshare, Apple's share isn't even close to the top five, and the gap between 1st and 2nd and the rest is pretty massive.
Apple has high mindshare, not marketshare, thanks to gobs of free media publicity. When Jobs poops, there's breaking news about the consistency, speculation about the corn count, and why we should all be excited. But the majority don't buy into the hype and shop elsewhere.
@Bozster
Yes, let's base the entirety of PC designs off of a single product.
The Lian Li PC-9F is nicer than any desktop Apple has ever made.
@Ducman69 Steve jobs popping! sounds like something that you'd hear them talking about at www.smellypoop.com
Your poop consistency quote about jobs would generate some heat over there.
@Bozster
Industrial design? Since when is making a phone out of GLASS industrial design? The unibody laptops are nice, but dent like crazy and the iMac is nice if you only have 2 USB devices. You make it sound like apple products are resilient where in reality, none of them can take a 1 foot drop.
Holy sh!t... that case looks like it could *kill* you... Sooooo hawt, forget simplistic aluminum limited fruit designs. This is the way to do it.
Awesome photoshop, very low key.
Quick question. Does that beautiful case exist?
@blckthng
Yes, its an Acer Predator
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103274&Tpk=Acer%20Predator
Its actually not that expensive either
Yeah man, this case is simply awesome. If you're a 14 year old boy who lives in his bedroom and spends his parent's money to buy flashy computers to play games on.
@sk1wbw
Or if you're a 28-year old guy with a KTM enduro bike in his carage.
It look like a transformer raped a PC case.
Does Toshiba even make desktop PC? or just laptops ... o.O
hideous.
ASUS FOR THE WIN YEAAAHHHHH!!!!
@Peytral Yess i
I'm not at all surprised. ASUS has made strides in customer service and quantum leaps in quality over the last few years.
HP, not so much.
Thats what happens when American companies get comfortable and just make cheaper and cheaper products to increase their margins, while foreign companies increase quality and customer service to fight for the loyalty of the American customer. This is also the reason why the big 3 failed. (I love the irony on the new Buick Regal commercial, a German engineered american car )
@rstoplabe14
and the curious thing is that the systems are made by the same OEMs.
It is all perception and how the company handles the customer after the sale.
@spodi
The OEMs have different levels of quality themselves. After all its the ODMs, or the companies themselves (HP, Dell) that design it, and its up to the OEMs (Foxconn, Quanta etc) to make an item to those specs, so if I design a product to use a wire of lower quality for example, or thinner plastics, or plastics where metal or metal alloys should have gone instead, thats the designers fault, not the OEMs for fulfilling that design. Now, there are some aspects of quality where the OEM plays a very important role in (Fit and finish) but the bigger OEMs are good with that.
GOOD! Toshiba sucks!
Call me a fanboy - I friggin LOVE Asus hardware! Too bad it's foreign...
Looks cool. Gamers will love this case. Wont work for corporate environment... or would it?... hm...
It looks like a particularly fruity-coloured Fiat Punto after scrappage.
@ Engadget "...the world leader in shipments has always been an American company?"
Does it really matter, when everything these "American" companies make is actually made in Asia?
Acer will be best
that is one fugly case
I'm amazed Toshiba has been in the top 5 for as long as they have, they hardly sell desktops and server equipment anymore, and most of their business is selling component hardware and laptops.
That is one ugly ass case! Eww!
