Why don't they just design the phone around the bumper that will keep people's sweaty fingers from touching the antenna. This would seem to be the logical fix.
yeah CR did the work for them. Phone design needs to be redone. SO Steve is basically saying ......Are you guys idiots CR said bumpers will fix it, here you go.
@Lord Vader what are you talking about, if apple failed its customers they wouldnt be so damn loyal. hell if microsoft can recover from a RROD on xbox 360 then this minor problem that is affecting no one i have seen in my circle of friends then this wont hurt them one bit. if toyota can recover from serious recalls and brake issues then apple will be fine without a hit. every company screws up, get it thru your thick skulls. this is only news because the iphone is such a big popular product. if this happened to the droid x, or droid incredible we would hear about it then it would never come up again cause no one in the media cares. sorry but its true.
I'm a bigger fan of apple after today.. I've never even used an iphone but this whole thing is ridiculous.. I love the response from them and how they handled the press today.. As weird as it sounds, I actually want an iphone 4 after all this and I won't even take a free bumper.. I will just use it as intended..
@Squarerootoftwo you know, this antenna is just a modern version of those old phones with external antennas. if u covered them with ur hand, you'd lose signal. its the same thing with iPhone 4. this antenna is an EXTERNAL ANTENNA. So if a hand covers it, you'll lose signal. Not so good move by Apple
@ruby So basically you believe that a company can solve its PR problems by attempting to turn the spotlight towards competitors instead of just putting its hands up and accepting that they messed up and will rectify the situation. From a PR perspective, that stunt was pretty pathetic. If many were going to do that they'd probably do it on the sly to a journalist but not infront of a world's audience its just abhorrent.
only a moron would attempt to fix hardware issue by updating software and apple ppl arent morons, they are jackasses! how so? well they know the issue is hardware based, figured that it will cost millions (hundreds of) to recall the phone and refund the money and most likely to go down under. So you fix it all by offering free rubber cases and 2 months full refund that ends in september. Maybe the phone will evolve come october and antenna issue will be gone! Afterall, this changes everything!
@a dumb cat I don't know about your name but you aren't dumb! I think it will be comical and I think Google should capitalize on this and many of Apple's false ads! Matter of fact, all other companies should capitalize on this!
@Squarerootoftwo You'd be surprised how many armchair "experts" here claimed Apple could fix a physical *hardware* problem with a software update #facepalm
"the fact that engadget asked if a software patch could possibly alter the properties of electromagnetism makes them look stupid..."
I disagree; they were just asking because they wanted to hear an admission of guilt straight from the horse's mouth. Just like when a parent knows their child did something wrong, they are still going to ask to gauge the integrity level of the child.
- First he said that Apple did not think it would be that big of an issue as it happens in all the phones. (but were ready with bumper solution nonetheless) - Then he said Apple worked their butts off for 22 days to figure out what was going on. - Some of the answers in Q&A did not even make sense
The first two don't add up. What was there to work for 22 days if they knew about the problem. Just to get us the data that 3million iPhones were sold?
In the end, Apple does not care as millions of iPhones are getting sold (They have that data) and shuts up the rest of the problem by distributing a 20cent bumper to everyone.
No real acceptance in the end apart from repeating "We love everyone" dialog some 100 times.
See what happen ifan if you step up a bit? You get free stuff. For all you people that have said you have no reception problem and trying to convince everyone that their iphone 4 is ok, you can go screw yourself and don't touch that bumper too.
Sorry to hijack the thread with this, but.. So Engadget, now that we have (marginally) more information about the situation, will you be re-evaluating the 9/10 iPhone 4 review score or what? Hardly seems fair to give it such a high score when you're required to cover it in a rubber hoop for optimal signal reception...
"First he said that Apple did not think it would be that big of an issue as it happens in all the phones. (but were ready with bumper solution nonetheless)"
This is a fairly important point, what Steve has admitted here is that Apple shipped the iPhone knowing that it had this defect. Shipping a faulty product is fairly serious stuff.
@reiththestud The arrogance of apple to show the video of the guy singing. I can't believe that no one called them out on that. Gadget blog press people are so lame with their questions. Someone should have stood up, asked their question and not sat down until Apple answered some tough questions without the spin. To much respect and deference was given to Apple on this issue.
@Squarerootoftwo Replying to the first post because this will get lost in the shuffle otherwise. However, if this antenna/reception issue is such a big deal, and millions of users(according to those of you bitching about it here) are affected, where are the defective units being returned, and where are the complaints to Apple Care regarding this issue. Myself nor anyone I know with an iPhone 4 is having any reception issues. This problem has been blown WAY out of proportion.
@XChrisX Well to me it's a 100% affliction rate. I'm the only person I know with an IP4 and I get death grip way too much. It's fun paired in with proximity problems.
Exactly. I know 3 other people with iphone 4's and not person has this problem. I have fairly large hands and I cannot even duplicate this issue on my phone.
I'm not saying it does not exist, videos show otherwise. But the 4 stories a day about it seems like it is just a bunch of whiny bloggers making alot of noise over something that is practically non existant.
I'm about tired of reading about it, just return the phone if it is that bad. Most normal people return a product if they are dissatisfied.
It is a hard call to make to return a phone that is the platform you used for a year. I could go back to the 3GS but at that point I'm going to need new hardware soon enough. I even bought the iMovie app, so that's going to be a waste.
Glad to see Apple is just another shady company that doesn't care about its costumers...
"Hey screw u all and thx for buying an iphone 4 were gonna give u a crappy case (bumper) because we blew it and don't want to take responsibility for it".
P.S. we can make millions of iphones but can't make that many bumpers so you will have to choose a even cheaper case. thx again!!
We promise to make the iphone 5 even worse because we just dont care but we will make every attempt to cover our own asses.
@ruby I'm a bigger fan of apple after today.. I've never even used an iphone but this whole thing is ridiculous.. I love the response from them and how they handled the press today.. As weird as it sounds, I actually want an iphone 4 after all this and I won't even take a free bumper.. I will just use it as intended.. And we have another kool-aid drinker folks............ ByeBye say hi to steve"HAND" jobs for us, k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Squarerootoftwo I know. The guys at ArsTech are laughing about some guy asking about a software update on an antenna issue. Hardware, software. The distinction is just too darn vague.
@SlapBass Really?? Could you come up with that dickhead?? Jesus Christ people!! It's touching a RAW antenne it's like putting you dam finger in a light socket and wonder why it doesn't light up!!
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Wow, like that was hard to figure out...
@Squarerootoftwo
Nope, maybe another post or two...just to get the message across...
Jk, I love you engadget! Glad to hear though that Apple fessed up!
@Squarerootoftwo
*gasp* You mean... there's not an app for that?
@Squarerootoftwo
I'm amazed Steve actually thinks theres enough company loyalty for them to pretend like there's no problem at all.
@Squarerootoftwo. Apple have failed me for the 102nd time
You're fixing it wrong
@Squarerootoftwo
Why don't they just design the phone around the bumper that will keep people's sweaty fingers from touching the antenna. This would seem to be the logical fix.
@Lord Vader
LOL, never cease to amuse me
@Squarerootoftwo
yeah CR did the work for them. Phone design needs to be redone. SO Steve is basically saying ......Are you guys idiots CR said bumpers will fix it, here you go.
Who cares if the antenna doesn't work, It's revolutionary...
IT'S REVOLUTIONARY DAMN IT!!!!
@n0ne Magical--get it right man;)
If your engineers take 22 days to come to the same conclusion every tech blog and YouTube user has known since launch day, you blew it.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Steve for making my iPhone 1st gen Feel so special today..
@ruby
I'll actually never get one until it's available on sprint though
@ruby So basically you believe that a company can solve its PR problems by attempting to turn the spotlight towards competitors instead of just putting its hands up and accepting that they messed up and will rectify the situation. @Squarerootoftwo
No engaget just keeps posting redundant Apple stories for more traffic ==> Ad clicks ==> $$
@Squarerootoftwo If the iPhone 5 has a different antenna design, they blew it.
only a moron would attempt to fix hardware issue by updating software and apple ppl arent morons, they are jackasses! how so? well they know the issue is hardware based, figured that it will cost millions (hundreds of) to recall the phone and refund the money and most likely to go down under. apple should be outlawed from printing ads of the iphone4 without the bumper. It is false advertising.
@Squarerootoftwo
the fact that engadget asked if a software patch could possibly alter the properties of electromagnetism makes them look stupid...
@a dumb cat

*engadget slaps steve jobs on the hand*
Steve Jobs:
- First he said that Apple did not think it would be that big of an issue as it happens in all the phones. (but were ready with bumper solution nonetheless)
- Then he said Apple worked their butts off for 22 days to figure out what was going on.

@LANjackal
I heard Apple were hoping to hire this guy to teach the team of 18 PhD's where they went wrong...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm3_qEMTdc4
I thought holding it the "right way" was a solution...now what would you do with a free bumper???
@LiveFromThe215
Funny as heck!
Droid Does!
@LiveFromThe215
Now that made me laugh! Thanks!
@SlapBass
Well, don't you think that they checked for other way to fix it during these 22days ?
Stop being an ass...
Apple failed hard with this one, but comon stop saying bullshit.
@Squarerootoftwo
See what happen ifan if you step up a bit? You get free stuff. For all you people that have said you have no reception problem and trying to convince everyone that their iphone 4 is ok, you can go screw yourself and don't touch that bumper too.

@Squarerootoftwo
"Apple affirms: no software fix for iPhone 4 antenna issue"
No shit. How stupid do they think people are? Wait....don't answer that.
@coolkams03
@Squarerootoftwo
So, now that we know iPhone 4 is flawed, how about an update to that review?
It should probably be rated lower than the 3GS and lower than the Droid since there is a design flaw and will require an additional bumper around it.
@reiththestud
The arrogance of apple to show the video of the guy singing. I can't believe that no one called them out on that. Gadget blog press people are so lame with their questions. @ruby Are you fucking stupid. The phone doesn't work without a bumper. So I guess with that I answered my own question, in fact your a moron.

@Squarerootoftwo I know. The guys at ArsTech are laughing about some guy asking about a software update on an antenna issue. Hardware, software. The distinction is just too darn vague.
@Squarerootoftwo this image screams failure. i see apple stock going down.
