I received my iPhone from the very first batch that shipped out. I went on to discover that my phone did indeed have the "death grip" issue. I decided to purchase a case and that particular issue was no longer one. Later on I then found out that I had a proximity sensor issue, as I was on the phone with someone, and suddenly I heard a dialing sound. Stunned, I looked at my phone only to find that it was calling my boss. Luckily I pushed end fast enough to cancel the call.
Yesterday I went to the Apple store (Houston, TX), and an employee exchanged my iPhone instantly without any questions for a new one. After using it for a few minutes, I discovered that the proximity sensor was still faulty.
The "death grip" can be solved by purchasing a case, fair enough. However, the proximity sensor is indeed a FAR GREATER issue at hand. I now have to decide whether to place my bets on Apple's next software update fixing the problem, or returning the phone.
Last thing I will say, I do love the phone, but the proximity sensor is a major shortcoming that could be a deal-breaker.
