Apple's Steve Jobs: 'no one's going to buy' a big phone
In response to a question at its press conference today about whether Apple could've done anything to avoid its antenna issues with the iPhone 4, Steve took the opportunity to rip on bigger rivals, saying that making a phone so big "you can't get your hand around it" helps, but that "no one's going to buy that." We're assuming he's likely talking about the latest crop of 4-, 4.3- and 5-inch phones that include the Galaxy S series, the EVO 4G, Droid X, and Dell Streak, even going so far as to call them "Hummers" (we take it you don't ever drive a Hummer, Steve?). Though ripping on the competition is to be expected, perhaps the more interesting takeaway here is that we can't realistically expect an iPhone much bigger than the 3.5-inch display they use today -- presumably that'll all be reserved for iPad territory going forward. We personally don't mind something with a little more screen real estate -- but hey, maybe humans need to go through a few more cycles of evolutionary hand enlargement before Cupertino's willing to capitulate.

Yes they will... They aren't that big. I have an incredible but the X is very attractive. I guess I must be the minority
@Robhimself
Except the Evo and the Incredible are sold out and the Droid X is showing insane demand.
It's funny that the iPhone sales seem to be grinding to a halt relative to Android's rapid growth.
@Robhimself
During this whole press conference my bullsh*t-o-meter was going off at rates previously seen only when politicians talk.
@The Advanced Kind
Right, because 3 million sales in 3 weeks is grinding to a hault.
@Sled
1.3 million in the last 20 days works out to 65k per day compared to over 500k for the first few days. Compare those numbers to Android's 160k per day, and yeah, they're grinding to a halt.
@The Advanced Kind
But doesn't that mean that he is wrong, and people do wan't bigger phones? Its not just the network, its not just because there is nothing better. Bigger better phones are more attractive to people that actually educate themselves on what is in the market.
@Sled
HAHA
You and your numbers....do the math man. Steve expects you y to jusr glance at the numbers thats why he gives it to you. Android is growing! Steve just gave google more inspiration and a pathway to beat them.
You "iphone" users are so high up you dont see whats coming.
@The Advanced Kind Stats don't lie.
@The Advanced Kind
lol wow bud, 3 weeks = 21 days. 3,000,000 (sales) / 21 (days) = 142k (phones per day)
and that is only one device, the iPhone 4. what are the 3gs sales? Currently we don't know, but I think it would be safe to say based on the past 21 days and the phone coming to 17 more countries it is not "grinding to a hault"

@Seven2k
Learn to spell, I will embrase the day android surpases iphone sales.
@Seven2k
Steve is running his mouth. Hyperbole is for idiots. The EVO isn't that much larger than the iPhone 4. Anandtech basically sums it up with a photo.

He can feel the android heat, and it's making him sweat.
@The Advanced Kind Keep dreaming...people love to make up lies & believe them.
@RobhimselfI I was just in the Verzon store earlier today and spent about 20 minutes with the Droid X. I loved it in my hand, its the second best feeling phone I've ever held (HD2 still holds the crown). My only issue with the X is its pocketability. I don't like a phone on my hip and I'm certainly not going to carry around a "Man Bag". So I think I need a bit more time playing with the phone than just 20 minutes. Maybe I can buy a display shell to just carry around for a few days to see how it feels.
@Sled You are including the original 1.7 million that they sold in the first couple days, I separated that number. So they sold an insane amount in the first couple days, but since then, sales seem to have been dropping dramatically.
1.7 Million in first 2 or 3 days, 1.3 million in the following 20 days.
@Sled
haha...i will learn to spell when you start using a calculator..apple lost around 10mill dollars in returns thats a no no.Thats why the press conference was set for today. The power of the media flexed its muscle and stood up to apple. 2010 is the year of the media they are standing up to top people. Tiger Woods is another example. Media wins...Steve came out to "smooth" things over but FAILED! He let his tongue slip twice already.
@The Advanced Kind
There aren't 160,000 Android phones sold per day.
Google claims 160,000 Android "devices" are "activated" per day.
@Sled Ummm...hey, spelling Nazi, don't you mean "embrace"?
Hmm, fast-forward a couple of years and the iPhone 5 will have a magical and revolutionary (and patented) 5" screen.
Steve: "No one's going to buy a small phone."
@reddevel
Of course, there are lots of people who will buy big phones. There are a lot of big idiots out there.
@Sled
Uhmmm In that same period, 3,360,000 Android phones were sold and activated...
Think before you speak...
@Seven2k "haha...i will learn to spell when you start using a calculator..apple lost around 10mill dollars in returns thats a no no.Thats why the press conference was set for today."
Dude, you're making Android fans look bad. Apple lost $10 million in returns, after earning over $600 million in sales. That's a pretty fucking awesome "problem" to have.
While I agree, a large phone/screen isn't for everyone. I like having the option of a large screen. I personally like having a qwerty keyboard on my phone.
@MosesusedaniPad I revel in your simplicity.
@zapote21 "Uhmmm In that same period, 3,360,000 Android phones were sold and activated..."
Link?
Even Google only claims 160,000 Android "devices" are activated (not sold) per day.
@Robhimself
I bet u own every android phone on the market
@The Advanced Kind Agreed. This is like when Andy Tung, vice-president of sales for MSI, said "We understand that people are only willing to pay less than $500 for a tablet." Uh, sorry Andy, they're already buying iPads for more. And sorry Steve: they're already buying the big phones. Happily. Like hotcakes.
@Robhimself
you got it. I 'test-drove' an Evo this past weekend and it felt right. Because it's thin, the larger HxW is not a problem.
If the Epic feels the same I just maybe jumping the T-mobile ship. Otherwise the vibrant (which is thinner) fits the bill perfectly when it comes to size.
To SJ, with free bumpers, and making it somewhat a requirement, you just made your phone LARGER...
Funniest press conference yet.
@cosmicwonderful Well, we all how the spin goes over in Cupertino. I guess those 1,000,000+ people with the Galaxy S are nobodies then.
@Dredayxi85 only own the incredible. Wouldnt mind a bigger android though. Can you blame me for wanting a phone with a UI that I have control over?
@RawlsRorty
Not in Apples eyes believe me. they notice returns like that. They saw this as a threat and called a press conference. Q2 is due and Q3 is underway Q4 is when they make a killing in sales for the holiday season. You are not looking ahead like Steve does. All those quarters would have been compromised if they didnt do anything. Now you are looking at more lost sales.
@The Advanced Kind
Simple concept, there are MORE types of Android phones to sell compared to iPhone choices readily available ... Get over yourselves. We all know that Android will out pace the iPhone in sales, calm the f*ck down about that but they will NEVER have as large of a one device sales figure as the iPhone 4 achieved. NO 3 million Droid X's sold in 3 weeks. That's what Apple brags about & they have EVERY right to. They aren't trying to make 20 phones a year, they make 1 ... Apple has NEVER been about having an incredible variety of devices, EVER.
@Seven2k
What in the world are you babbling about?
Apple is selling iPhone 4s faster than they sold iPhone 3GSs and with a lower return rate. That's an unmitigated success if ever I saw one.
@Robhimself
ya.. cause everyone has the same size hand, right steve?
@The Advanced Kind
uh...just one small flaw in the logic...iPhone sales numbers are for US only whereas those Android numbers are for worldwide. So apples and oranges comparison. Android is growing (largely due to widespread handset manufacturer support) but iPhone still dominates (though ever decreasingly).
@Tuan X
You're making a point for the opposing side as well. There's a reason no phone sells more than the IPhone: there are more CHOICES of phones for people to choose from and each hardware manufacturer is always trying to outdo the previous best Android phone. So, there is not an Android phone that sells more than the Iphone. Plus, I don't think that it is Apple who only wants to concentrate on one phone. I can't imagine using the iPhone OS on any other phone when given a choice between the iPhone and Android. To me, the iPhone has more of a hardware appeal than software. I would definitely buy the iPhone, only if it had Android on it.
@RawlsRorty
Dude OMG....you need to look at apple sales numbers to know what im talking about. You said 10mill is nothing...IT IS.. you need to be behind the scenes of the sales part to understand. Also need to understad how apple works.
@awall
i never said iphone will die. This is not about phones its about companies Google vs Apple. Google is up and coming. If you are taking my statements as one for only phones you are not getting what im saying. Google is the new apple. This was said in the late 90s when it was MS vs Apple.
In all honestly i have tried to be better in flaming people on here but comments like these dont make it easy. Remember how you spell ASSUME.

@The Advanced Kind Eh no, they aren't. Android is an OS on multiple handsets, iPhone is one phone. 3M in 3 weeks? Your gonna play that down?
While ol' Steve is indeed grasping at straws in the face of great EVO and Droid X sales numbers, I myself (and a number of my friends, though that's such a cop-out phrase) find the EVO and Droid X screen sizes to be too big. I don't want to feel like I'm holding a small television up to my head when talking on the phone.
My Moto Droid is a bit chunky with the keyboard, but for my money the Droid Incredible and iPhone are both in the sweet spot - big enough screen for a functional web experience, but small enough for pocketability and for not feeling like an idiot holding it up to my face.
@Robhimself I think it's more about having a bigger screen versus a bigger phone overall. Iphone has pretty big bezel areas above and below the main screen that are kind of annoying.
@zapote21 Android is an OS on multiple phones, iPhone is a single phone, can you comprehend that?
@Robhimself a bigger phone hight and width wise means a thinner phone making it still pocketable!!!!!!!!!!1
@Sled
Do realize that a majority of those sales are upgrades - meaning, lack of growth. Android, on the other hand, is picking up new users at a rapid speed.
@The Advanced Kind
Every person I know who got an Android phone only did so because the iPhone was not available on their network.
Every one of them.
You want to see 'grinding to a halt?' watch what happens to Android phone sales when Verizon gets the iPhone.
Hate away, but it is true & you will see.
enjoy your 2nd place phone.
@Robhimself You are the exception, except you didn't buy a big phone....
@Aegee14 You can view the pluses & minuses on having one & more than one device. Android has a BIG problem with over saturation & fragmentation. Where as iOS has a problem with the exact opposite. I'd prefer an iOS device but that's just me. I'd also like for Apple to make 2 alternative designs for the iPhone to give folk options without over-saturating themselves.
@ Steve Jobs
I did...
@Robhimself
And no one will ever need a computer in their home.
@joe23521 do you realize that most of the new Android devices are also upgrades because there is a new android device every month?
