In response to a question at its
press conference today about whether Apple could've done anything to avoid its antenna issues with the iPhone 4, Steve took the opportunity to rip on bigger rivals, saying that making a phone so big "
you can't get your hand around it" helps, but that "no one's going to buy that." We're assuming he's likely talking about the latest crop of 4-, 4.3- and 5-inch phones that include the
Galaxy S series, the
EVO 4G,
Droid X, and
Dell Streak, even going so far as to call them "Hummers" (we take it you don't ever drive a Hummer, Steve?). Though ripping on the competition is to be expected, perhaps the more interesting takeaway here is that we can't realistically expect an iPhone much bigger than the 3.5-inch display they use today -- presumably that'll all be reserved for
iPad territory going forward. We personally don't mind something with a little more screen real estate -- but hey, maybe humans need to go through a few more cycles of evolutionary hand enlargement before Cupertino's willing to capitulate.
@johnspierce
Thats ok, and 6 months from now, if you want the newest OS, you will either have to root, or buy a new phone. Oh, who cares how many apps are in an app store. Whats important, is how many USEABLE apps are in an app store. Its the old Mac vs PC thing from the 90's. How many word processors or spread sheet programs do you need? Similar in the mobile world. I don't need 140 different weather apps, just the best one for me.
@rkevwill but android phones from 1.6 onwards can use nearly all android apps. The Android fragmentation Problem is an issue but manufacturers are getting better slowly i think as the market for android phones gets more competitive so will the pace of firmware updates and as phones have a life span of 2 years on average i dont really see this as been a long term issue.
The android market does still need an upgrade to make it more usable for developers but with every android phone sold the market grows and more people will develop for it giving you those quality apps (not that there arent alot out there already). Android has the best games because of the free availability of emulators and is gaining ground on purpose made programmes so yes i agree it doesn't matter how many apps there are just which ones are good.
Apple and the iPhone/pad as a contender are dead when skeleton stevie keels over.
Shouldn't this have been CE-Oh no he didn't?
I want a big phone. I'm a big guy @ 6'5", and the bigger the better.
@MManLA
PS, I would LOVE to buy a big phone.
people don't want big phones because Jobs says they don't. He already had millions saying they didn't want flash. He's kinda like Kim Jong-Il if you think about it
I cant believe some the responses on here. I mean I am somewhat of a phone techie but my God there are some geeks on here. Not everyone. But you guys do know that these are just phones right? I mean we love them but. People talk like it's some personal vendetta against anyone that uses a different phone than them. Really? I have an iPhone. Love it. Does that mean I don't think the EVO is cool? No I'd love to have one to play around with. Seriously people relax. It's like Apple vs. Droid like North v South. Can't they just all be cool for what they are? Looks like the Crip and Bloods internet gangbanging on YouTube. Going back and forth like idiots. Comments like " Apple users have their heads up so far they don't even see what's coming" is so blatantly stupid I can't even put it into words. Is there a call phone revolution I need to know about? Is a lynch mob gonna come hang my iPhone?? Jeez
This really isn't as much about the iphone as it is about Jobes breathtaking arrogance and the total bullshit he's spouting about his new antenna design. Microsoft use to be similarly arrogant.
I'd buy (& prefer) a bigger iPhone.
I have big hands, and would love the (screen) real estate!
Bigger HD screen, bigger (touch) buttons, maybe wallet sized...
"Coming in 2011 - the iPhone MAX - for big MINDS!"
Somewhere between the iPhone & the iPad.
Yes we would, Apple!
Since when did grown ass men start arguing about the size of a cell phone? Mr. Jobs your competition isn't building late 80's Nino Brown sized smartphones are you kidding? They're building great smartphones just like you! Wow, I haven't seen such fervor between factions since the Sega Genesis vs Super Nintendo years! I love reading the responses to these posts.
WHAT??? The evo and droid x are not that much bigger physically. The screen is just bigger. The iphone just wastes space with it's huge black bevel on to and the bottom of the phone.
LMAO.. Point and Laugh Point and Laugh at Steve.. Arrogant A-Wipe
Well here comes another load of Apple BS.
The previous Apple phones were larger than the iPhone 4. I guess that means nobody bought them.
The increased size to build this phone "right" would have been
Some would argue that the ipad is just a large phone w/o the phone... apparently apple is good at making those nowadays
Generalizing way too much. Of course there are people who would buy big phones. I've even read posts from folks wishing their iPad could also make calls. That said, I don't like big phones crowding my pockets. So I'm glad he feels that way.
If no one wants to then why are they selling like hotcakes?
Thats why the Nokia N95 was a succes?
Too bad those are not "new convert" sales, but existing isheep. Android had a higher adoption rate.
Android will be embedded in every product eventually...washing machines, coffee makers.
haha I guess I'm apart of the"no one"
lay my droid X on a table, put an iphone or original droid on top of it, and your looking at a few centimeters sticking out.. phone is not big AT ALL, in fact, I can confidently say apple got it wrong, while people may still complain about 4.3, I think a 4.0 to 4.3" phone should officially become REQUIRED, I dont have big hands and I can easily touch all i need to touch including the unlock key on top of my X, fits in my pocket with zero difference than my original droid, but the extra screen size makes typing and selecting absolutely incredible, I know there are apple fanboys that will sit here and disagree, but they wouldn't be if they went in person and tried one
4.3 is the new 3.5 and your right, jobs is SWEATIN in his office.. 160,000 droids activated daily up from 60,000 3 months ago, 100,000 apps up from 7,500 last november, every carrier vs 1 carrier last october, 1 billionth app download in just under 2 years (almost 70% of those downloads have come in the past few months), last but not least pro-apple consumer reports rejecting the iphone and requesting people not to buy it
I didn't decide to become an android fanboy, android made me a fanboy and I've had an itouch for a long time
also i owned my DROID since launch day... just got the droid x on launch day as well... i've had more people ask about my phone (including iphone users) more in the past 2 days than they ever did with my droid... it really is incredible, but I have been playing with it a ton ;)
I don't like the trend of going bigger for phones. I think Steve Jobs has a point, going much larger than even 4" screens for a phone doesn't make much sense to me. Who wants to have a brick of a phone in their pocket? A small screen is a small screen even if it's 5", it's still SMALL. I don't think you get much more utility. Bigger is not better when it comes to mobile phones. 3.5" is perfect.
I know 3" possibly even just 2" is the sweet spot for a lot of people, but the 4.3 on the Evo is not hard for anyone but maybe a small child to hold. For one thing, the Evo is more efficient with bezel than the iPhone, so it's not proportionally larger than the iPhone. So fail, Steve Jobs.
I'm an average 5'9" guy and I want my 4" + iPhone! 300 ppi is awesome but in reality I'd much rather have a 4.2" iPhone with the "old-fashioned" 150 ppi.
They will however buy a phone with a screen large enough to actually see. That means bigger than 3.6" really.
I honestly don't care that much about my screen size. EVO 4G and iPhone 4 are both OK screen sizes for me
i luv bigger phones...idealy the spec sud be betwin 4 to 5 inches....
