Nokia: 'we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict'
Nokia's looking to ride the mojo of any negative fallout from today's Apple press conference, slipping out a rather fascinating statement this afternoon. The gist of it is that Espoo's keen on letting everyone know how much blood, sweat, and tears they've poured into perfecting their antenna design strategy over the years, going so far as to say that they "prioritize" it over the physical design of the phone if they need to in order to optimize its call performance -- an opinion moderately different from the "we want to have our cake and eat it too" philosophy espoused by Jobs today. In closing, Nokia acknowledges that a "tight grip" can mess with the performance, though they say they've done a bunch of research on the ways their phones are typically held so that the antennas are placed optimally. Interestingly, there was a stink not long ago about the severe signal degradation some E71 users were seeing when they placed their hands on the lower rear of the phone -- but you can't win 'em all, we suppose. Follow the break for the full statement.
"Antenna design is a complex subject and has been a core competence at Nokia for decades, across hundreds of phone models. Nokia was the pioneer in internal antennas; the Nokia 8810, launched in 1998, was the first commercial phone with this feature.
Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying human behavior, including how people hold their phones for calls, music playing, web browsing and so on. As you would expect from a company focused on connecting people, we prioritize antenna performance over physical design if they are ever in conflict.
In general, antenna performance of a mobile device/phone may be affected with a tight grip, depending on how the device is held. That's why Nokia designs our phones to ensure acceptable performance in all real life cases, for example when the phone is held in either hand. Nokia has invested thousands of man hours in studying how people hold their phones and allows for this in designs, for example by having antennas both at the top and bottom of the phone and by careful selection of materials and their use in the mechanical design."

@deedeedee, they've played a subliminal video during the conference to reprogram your brain so you will Hold It Right™ for the rest of your, or its days.
Guess this is why Nokia are such a world leader when it comes to smartphones.
Wait...
@Geshpenst
No, they're the world leader......
because !
@Geshpenst
Sarcasm fail?
@inept
Hey go easy on him. He is still working on interwebz sarcasm. You keep trying champ!
Still using the old N95-4... Still not getting any dropped calls on ATT (u know, the iPhone network) unless I try to talk on the phone while typing at the same time away from my bluetooth headset (held between shoulder and ear, 80's highschool girl style).
Luckily the Epic 4G should be out soon... eventually.
@meorah
5800 on at&t preceded by 3250 on same network..... No issues, ever
Oh no you didn't!...
Thank you Nokia! What I would expect any company manufacturing a phone to say! That seems like common sense to any professional in this field. Jobs pulled his dick out on his customers with that press conference~pause~ But he knows it wont matter. Hes like "iPhone sold 3Mill in 3 weeks, suck it biaatch!" lmao
FUCK NOKIA..!!! They stuck in the 90's....
@Beto4209
If you have to make phone calls with your smartphone, you blew it!
Steve
sent from my iPho
@naashak
Looks like you lost a bit of data at the end of that signature! Lol, you sure you were holding it correctly?
@naashak
iPho is a delicious noodle soup with thinly sliced beef in a glass bowl. You can pick a black or white bowl, but if you want white your noodles will take an hour to be served.
Perhaps Apple should rename the iPhone to iPDA as its not really a phone, something we've all known from the first gen iPhones.
im have a nokia phone, i tried to get the signal down. and i just couldn't.
apple is pathetic.
@javogc lol go back to school.!
@javogc lol go back to school.!
NOKIA > APPLE
Nokia is irrelevant in the Smartphone market. They are dominating in low cost phones in 3rd world countries. Nokia's best days are behind them.
The smartphone market is also hurting Google, where Android investments are now impacting their performance in a negative way. Competing with Apple isn't easy. Especially when you have to give your software for free!
Apple is running circles around their competition. Watch for July 20!
This from a company that has made it's way to the top by selling mostly low to mid range phones speaking to a company that sells I phone and that started the touch screen craze to begin with please someone tell me what phone before apple was as great as the iPhone please? I would love to hear it, o wait u cannot
@ihve2cuties
this is myth, people like to think its all low end phoens , but the figures prove nokia sells phones at both end of the market. The sell an insane number of high end phones , they currently have the phone on the market with the best internet browser i have ever used on phone (the nokia n900) .
And there about to release a phone with the largest camera, free maps, hdmi, and usb on the go .
@IMarius The largest camera in this market means bubkiss now a days. The mega pixel count is an irrelevant number because 5MP is about all any1 needs unless they do photo editing in which case they probably have a better camera, as for HDMI yeah~ if i have a screen to attach it to, u probably have a better way of watching the item on the screen and personally no one carries a HDMI cable around.
@sonowake
dude your generalizing , nobdy carries hdmi cables ? says who,
and what about usb on go , you cant tell me that is not going to be one of the best freatures on any phone.
here my problem i am not trying to say nokia phones are better then others , but in my opinion (and use ) they are just as good as any other companies.
if apple brought out the largest camera or htc, people would big it up , just like people like to play it down when nokia do it. And there are still many other features on nokia phones that make them great phones.
@sonowake, largest camera has nothing to do with Mpix of it, but with the physical size of the CCD sensor. The larger the sensor -> the more light it catches -> the crispier and less noisy the image is.
One thing I've never had a problem with: Nokia reception/RF performance. Nokias are PHONES, first and foremost.
@muchdrama
And thats where a good portion of Nokia sales are. Phones, as in basic cheap phones.
@muchdrama
WE REQUIRE MORE THESE DAYS.
@SCXFAN What's your problem with cheap, plastic phones? If they make and receive calls, isn't that the purpose?
@hey buddy Who's 'we'?
@HighestRanked2
Yes!!! They come to sling crap at the almighty apple.
Why can't they just accept that they suck and apple is better!?
too bad the latest Nokia phones have CRAP signal performance.
@jake359, ummm, which ones? I have the N900 and it's on par with my old N95 in terms of reception, and I don't remember I ever had a dropped call on both of them. I've even used it in a rough wilderness a couple of weeks ago where none of my friends phones (one SE k850i, HTC Desire and some cheapo Samsung) had signal.
Looking at some of the comments it seems that people believe that it's OK for Apple to throw poo in every direction (I'm a Mac..., Vista bashing, HTC, Nokia, RIM bad press to cover their own failing), but nobody can touch Apple. Others cannot even defend themselves, no.
Apple's definitely done a thorough job at brainwashing.
@shishi
I want the one with more GeeBee's
@spartandre217, don't forget the wee-phees...
@incognito
LOLZ!
Regarding potential customers .. You gain some and you lose some. In which direction this self righteous statement will turn your potential customer base certainly leaves one to wonder.

The reason why Nokia phones look like crap now verified. :)
Nokia, where's your N8? Can you spend more time in shipping that than talking?
@pika2000
It's killing me inside too :-(
Umm, have you ever tried to use a Nokia phone? I rest my case (no pun intended).
Nokia, Motorola, BlackBerry Bold 9700, Droid Eris,Samsung Omnia II, laws of physic, $100 million, 17 anechoic chambers, 18 PhD, statistics, 0.55%, Hawaii, Consumer Reports, ???
is he drunk or what?
So Nokia must have some damn good antennas since they don't have many good designs or software. (Yes, they do have some good designs, just not many)
I agree this with their early models, some of the models I tried recently ( like xpress music, E52) has way much poorer antenna performance. But some of their very cheap phones have very good antenna. It is really hard to tell though as they make hundreds of models. For antenna I would give Motorolo higher mark than Nokia.
Only morons buy a nokia phone
@assb10yr only moronic 10 yr olds post on adult forums, go back to 4chan plox
@Ignoramus so you are saying that about half of the people in the world are morons...
@johQ sry was meant for assb10yr
Nokia will sue anyone who stands up to their bullying demands, despite agreeing to license their technology under FRAND terms.
Nokia is no better or worse than others, they have released duds in the past, it took quite a few software updates to get the N95 to function properly, something which was largely resolved by the time they launched the NAM (North American Model).
