Pinel & Pinel's 80's arcade cabinet fits squarely into the future
Pinel & Pinel -- it's been awhile, hasn't it? The design boutique has just kicked things back into high gear with an all-new creation inspired by the era of wooden TVs, Bono's mullet and the original Engadget BBS. The 80's Trunk, a swank new arcade cabinet, is easily one of the most astounding creations we've ever seen, and there's no question that your basement is yearning for one as we speak. Unlike conventional cabinets, this one's equipped with an emulation system that houses 60 unforgettable titles (Pac-Man, Space Invaders and 1924, just to name a few), and there's also a plethora of color options to choose from. You're also looking at a 1080p LCD, enough amplification to wake the neighbors with bleeps and bloops and an iPod / iPhone docking station if you prefer your own background noise. Mum's the word on a price, but it'll probably come down to choosing between this and your first born's college education. You know what to do.

Stopped Reading at BBS, just brought back so many memories of downloading custom levels for Doom, Rise of the Triads, and Duke Nukem back when I was a child!! I was so stoked when we got our first 28.8kbps modem!! We were the cool kids!!
If any programmer out there knows where to get the old Doom and Doom2 with the chicken launcher patch that made you launch chickens as well as the Christmas patch that allowed you to shoot Santa..........please let me know!
@mjkxxl
The cryonic technician on Futurama... "Welcome to the world of tomorrow!" Only it looks 1930's Art-Deco.
@mjkxxl - or you could just build your own using a second-hand arcade cabinet and some skills. All that for a fraction of the cost and loads more fun!
If you could add your own ROMs, it would be amazing. Don't cap me at 60!
Nice, wouldn't mind one of those for some Nostalgic gaming
When inspired by Bono's mullet, where can you possibly go wrong?
@pple is poo HAHA someones a little obsessed with apple. even articles that arent about apple has to be commented about apple. did steve jobs sleep with your mom then left in the middle of the night promising you he would make breakfast in the morning? haha
No contest between that and any MAME cabinet. Then again, MAME ain't the solution for rich idiots addicted to designer stuff.
@pple is poo Yah an iPhone
What did you expect? A Zune dock??
The dude is actually trying to sell these things you know, haha
Is it just me or does that joystick seem waaaaaaaay to tall??
seems kinda limited with just 4 buttons there.
@i8urCookies
That's all you need to play the 80's classic games.
@jeff0529
I disagree. Many '80s classics require different controls. For example, Missile Command just isn't Missle Command without a trackball.
@jeff0529 - maybe if you like pac-man :) I was actually thinking of all the buttons needed for Defender and Stargate. And of course, the early Street Fighter games.. And you could really only use two buttons with that setup, since you'd be holding the joystick with one hand.
Wasn't it 1942 not 1924?
@intrglctcrevfnk that's what I was thinking. It was a World War II fighter pilot game. 1924 would be... an alcohol smuggling game? I'm in.
I could be wrong but wasn't the game called "1942"???
@moonbase2
I think you're right... an Engadget typo.
A 1080 LCD is a bit of overkill for '80s games.
Yes, the joystick seems way too tall, and the controls seem limited. If you don't have the proper controls, many games just won't feel right.
Looks nice but they need changeable controls. Street Fighter and Asteroids wouldn't work with what I see on that cabinet.
I like it except the stupid i-device hookup (and the price)
@Accidental
What is the price? I didn't see it.
Really wonder if he actually built the thing? This is definitely a render. What's that iPhone dispenser doing there? Where did he get that square 1080p monitor? What TF is a amplifier with crap specs like 2 numerical Boosters and a 1000 W low pitched exit with 110 dB? I have to think of the Boogie Nights stereo sales pitch "I have this unit at home. But, I've got it modified with the TK-421, which is a bass unit that basically kicks in another two, maybe three quads when you really crank. Let me put another eight track in so you can get a better idea what I'm talking about."
Then onto the serious stuff: joysticks 8 inch tall are maybe nice dildo's but not for gaming pleasure!, mame cannot be sold, 1942 is not available in a commercial licence.....
@blanka
And I forgot, what is that weird unbranded Ferrari doing next to it? 80-ies is Lamborghini Countachs DUDE!
I see you've got Galaga there. Wise.
@pple is poo - One should learn to spell better than an elementary student before commenting on another's lack of intelligence.
Not enough buttons, lack of trackball, only 1-player....I'll pass
So how do they handle the joystick for 1924 (likely 1942 or 43, the sequel)? 4-way and 8-way joystick games don't get along, unless you like cursing at Pac Man or Mario on DK. 60 games is the number of classics on a bootleg JAMMA board that is commonly sold to put multiple classics in one stand up. You can generally get a refurbed Galaga or Pac Man cabinet with one for about $1000.
All that said, I think the cabinet looks kind of cool but I wouldn't plop down much more than 500 for it, especially if it's just running a modified MAME front end.
@Enduro Geeez, what a pretentious website. I hope those wheels lock. The joystick looks way too long and has too much throw for games like Pac Man. I like the color schemes and design but that's about it.
I remember that game 1492. Took forever to complete the 32 levels and sail Christopher Columbus all the way to America.
Will this allow you to control the iPod with your member?
Ahh 1924, one of my favorite video games. I believe it was a DDR style dance-off where two players did the Charleston.
Not trying to be a jerk, but this is hardly worth a mention on Engadget. In fact, there are numerous vendors selling emulation cabinets that are far superior in every way than this artist's conceptual drawing.
All the way around, this blurb spouts ignorance of the subject. 1080p is the opposite of what you want with an emulated 80's video game.
As others have mentioned, the joystick is too long to be useful.
Please stop giving credit to people who haven't invested the sweat and money of actually building something. Designs alone are not newsworthy.
@mrtexasfreedom
No kidding. A good mame machine needs a low Rez 4:3 interlaced CRT monitor, not a hi rez LCD. And swappable multiple control setups. And no stupid iPod to drown out the awesome oldschool tunes!!
'80s
The apostrophe comes BEFORE the numerals, to take the place of the missing "19".
Also,
apostrophe + s = possessive
This thing is so obsessed with putting style over substance, no wonder they stuck an iphone on the front of it. If you want real retro arcade action, you can get a lot more functionality for a lot less money: http://www.mameroom.com/Categories.asp?ID=ArcadeSystems
