Verizon told CNET the company had "done everything possible" to ensure adequate supply of the
Droid X, but there's apparently no anticipating the demand for a top-tier smartphone --
like the Droid Incredible before it, the giant 1GHz Motorola handset is already out of stock, both online (today's orders suffer a ten-day delay) and in many brick and mortar stores. Verizon confirmed the shortages in a communique to
Android Central, saying the company was pleased with initial sales, and that though they were "successful at keeping up with early demand" supplies are presently "low or out." Tomorrow's just not going to work out,
our anti-gravitational friend -- can we take a July 27th raincheck?

@HighestRanked2
I have a fiancé and had sex with her two days ago. As for the nerd thing hey, I may be a tech geek (so are most of us on this blog), but my friend from college is now a Miller Light girl and hot and she loves her original Droid. You fail.
@DefPoet
Touché
Just wanted to throw this out there,
I work at a small verizon wireless satellite store (non corporate), and me personally sold 35 droid x's on release day and the other person I work with sold 24, most of these sales were walkins which is surprising considering before release we had gotten maybe 2 or 3 deposits
so to those of you saying no one knows about this phone you are partially correct, many dont know about it, but thats what us sales people are for to spread knowledge of the device.
couple side notes:
1) We had a employee running between our stores grabbing droid x's to keep up with sales.
2) the droid X is a horrible sale for me as an employee, and I make more money and cover my "numbers" better with phones such as the LG ally and moto droid.
3) our company is currently out of stock :(
@Scattaman As I send this message from my Evo, I do agree with your Android wins statement but for different reasons. What many Apple fans don't understand is how Android let's you truly customize your device. Apple constantly talks about freedom to be yourself and then forces you to comply to Jobs way of thinking. Everyone is different, and instead of forcing conformoty, Android embraces change. I love how I can pick up my wife's Evo and see how its morphed into a totally different device from mine, because it suits her. I really love the styling of the Droid X, but it makes my Evo look small! I also wish it had a front facing camera too.
@RawlsRorty 15, 5 of them in golden boxes for CEOs, the other 10 were sent to rappers to put in their music videos
@beast101 haha I know exactly what you mean!!!!
@VAVA Mk 2
STRIKE !! ::D
@Joseph9307 That's why you pay the extra $70 and only get a 1 year contract.
@beast101: "got mine. happiest days of my life"
LOL. There's no fanboy like a Fandroid!
If someone had said this about an iPhone, he would have been raked over the coals. Only on Engadget - home of the Android astroturfing assault.
@connorjrocks
Hey I thought my battery was going quick also, but i restarted my phone at about 40% and when i powered it back on it jumped back up to 70 % and stayed there for a while, then continued to drain at a normal rate. I think there is an issue with the batter status and there is an OTA about to drop to fix that and smooth some other stuff out.
@HighestRanked2 Ok so, you know what the Droid X is, correct? So, by default, are you also calling yourself a virgin nerd? Or do intentionally play ignorant/stupid?
@connorjrocks Just change keyboards, its android, try swype, touchpal, or the htc ime (its the best)
@audrywienerdog
You surely bought it.
@Joseph9307 This phone sux. It got terrible reviews and its way too big. I'll wait for an Andriod 2.2 phone, or the iPhone 5.
@bob1000
Motorola is almost bankrupt. They're in a similar position to what Palm went through. Motorola doesn't have enough money to pay the factory to build Droid Xes in quantity. Only about a batch of 1000 at a time is all they can afford. Motorola will be filing for bankruptcy before the year's end, leaving investors, employees and consumers sucking air. Only the Motorola executives will be pocketing huge bonuses. This is a company run by crooks.
@Scattaman "People keep forgetting that Android (the OS) is on a lot of smartphones...so when they sell a million here...a couple hundred thousand there... another thousand... it adds up... so 3 million for one phone... versus all the millions for android... in the end...i think Android is gonna win..even if by mere market saturation"
AGREED. The simple fact is that there is ONE new iOS device that is released each year, and adopters are forced to cope with whatever dissatisfaction they may have with its (No live wallpapers (no point of even havin a nice static cuz icons are covering the damn thing), no homescreens, no widgets, no keyboard, no choices in hardware, FLASH, etc.
Android is an OS on a plethora of devices to give users CHOICE! Want big screen or small screen? Keyboard or no keyboard? LCD or AMOLED screen? Stock Android or one with a skin? This is, IMHO, why Android is Best, because we as people want CHOICE, not forced to cope with what the manufacturer tells us what we can and cannot do with the devices WE PAY FOR!
Now, take into account the simple fact that there are 160,000+ Android devices activated, DAILY - It has already won. And that number probably has grown a bit more since several wks ago. Hate it or Love it, Android is on a steamroll to the top, and Apple nor anyone else is stopping it. In such a market, pick the phone YOU like, not what everyone else has or says is 'BEST'. It may be iPhone, may be an Android... or even a WinPho7 in the near future. All in All, this free, highly-customisable (lol) OS from Google is nothing short of Grand SUCCESS, people......
DROID DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Oghowie
Yeah, in response to Stevo's dumb remark.
@HotFuzz
As if there aren't a million iFans who do this IN ANDROID articles.
@Hiprocksoul I had swipe on my Magic (saying "my MyTouch" just makes me cringe) and I got rid of it in three minutes. I just didn't wanna spend the extra time re-teaching myself to text. If I have trouble in the middle of an email or text I just put the phone on standby for a second and then after that it doesn't stick as much. Any other keyboard apps your recommend?
I saw the X on release day, but I prefer my Storm2. The Storm's screen has deeper blacks, is easier to type accurate on the SurePress screen, the speaker is louder and clearer than the Droid's. And NO phones but Blackberrys have Blackberry Messenger. :)
oh, and the camera button is so stiff, it's impossible to hold the phone still while shooting a pic, IMO.
If I didn't have a BB, I might have seriously considered the Droid. Build quality (the cheap plastic case) isn't as nice as the Storm's either, but not many phones are built as solidly as BB.
@dave1812
typo: "accurate" should be "accurately"
@dave1812
Remember how Blackberry has a minuscule amount of apps, and the browser is far behind the android and ios browsers.
@JoeDavidBobJr
yes, the BB browser SUCKS. I think we can ALL agree on that! :)
Thing is, I use my phone primarily for 3 things:
1. as a great speaker phone
2. messaging & emails. most texting is done via BBM
3. Pandora
secondarily, I use it to access the web, and I have weather, maps, and news apps that I use often, too.
PURE WEB BROWSING is something that I don't enjoy on a tiny screen. I have an Apple touch and I tend to go to the apps for news and other features far more than I go directly to Safari to browse.
@dave1812
True, I've had the original Storm since it was released and have always had faith in Rim, they and Nokia are the true pioneers in the smarthphone industry. Anyways, do you have any idea if OS 6 will be released for the Storm 2 and Storm?
@JoeDavidBobJr
From what I've seen in the forums, we can expect 6 to PROBABLY come out for the S2. Not so sure about the S1, as it has less memory. We'll just have to wait and see. Another rumor has it that the S3 will have a different OS than 6, which to me makes little sense, but hey, what do I know? :)
@JoeDavidBobJr
oh, this is funny! I JUST read a news item that OS6 is due out in September. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/07/17/BUBC1ED88G.DTL
@dave1812
Hey stop speaking about BB. you are hijacking the Droid X thread :)
@dave1812 Disagree on the cheapness. It is very well made, the X is wrapped in some sort of soft touch, except for the metal back plate and glass screen.
@dave1812 um android has pandora
@JoeDavidBobJr
and android has ZERO useful apps. continue playing with star maps while i get paid with my corporate exchange server
@dave1812 You;re kidding about the Droid X right? Granted you don't have to like it, and everyone has their opinions. But by no means is the Droid X, "cheap plastic". One thing I will say about Moto with their high-end Android phones is they do a bang up job with the hardware. Also, I didn't have any problems with the camera button when I had my run with it.
@dave1812
whats the point of the BB messanger? you cant talk to anyone else who does not have a blackberry?
@dave1812 Sounds like an iphone
@MicrosoftOwns
Yeah go suck Balmer's dick.
@njbianco96
of course it has Pandora. My freaking Sony Blur ray players have Pandora apps. Pretty soon, refrigerators will have Pandora. What was your POINT????
@dave1812
damn typos. "Blu ray"; not "blur ray". LOL!
@EggoEspada
I should have been more specific. To me, it LOOKS cheap. I don't mean I think it will fall apart or is shoddy. It, like the original droid, just doesn't LOOK like quality. I'm not disparaging its actual quality--just the looks--it looks cheesy to me. just an opinion! :)
When you look at the storm, you'll see black chrome edges and the back is satin brushed metal. Very elegant, IMO. I'm only talking about looks now, folks--I'm not saying that the Motorola droids are crap like their awful Razr phone! :)
@dave1812
Isn't choice great? I replaced my Storm 2 with a Droid X, and I couldn't be happier with it. But I do a lot of web browsing on my phone, and was really never impressed with the touch screen accuracy or build quality of my 9550. I mean, doesn't your battery cover pop off if dropped from any height...or if the wind blows too strongly?
Maybe the X you saw was different than what came in my box, but my camera button is definitely not stiff. And I disagree with you about feeling cheap...it is completely covered in soft-touch coating, like a Thinkpad. The tolerances are really tight, nothing twists or flexes, and the battery cover is very secure. The only part that feels a little flimsy are the physical buttons, which have a bit too much wiggle in them.
The biggest surprise though seems to be in signal reception..my BB would report around 95dBm at my desk, where the X is reporting 85dBm. Of course I am assuming that neither phone is outright lying to me, and can't tell yet if that actually translates to improved call quality.
Sorry but I just had too,
"No one wants to buy a big phone"
@Shorven
Ironic isn't it?
@Shorven Yah...what the heck is going on here?
@Shorven
"Droid series phones sell less than one additional phone per 100 than the last droid series phone. -Steve"
He is amazing with words isn't he?
@reiththestud And here you morons are acting like this has been a huge success while there haven't been even guesses as to what the sales numbers might have been in order to "sell out". It's easy to "sell out" if you only had a very limited quantity to sell.
@HAL2000
Obviously these Android phone releases aren't moving as much product as an Apple phone launch would. But you're fairly dense if you don't think that the cumulative total of 4.3" Android device sales isn't quickly approaching a milestone number (and will continue to do so for a long time).
The point is that people are getting sick of Jobs' totally arrogant myopia. It's like Apple can do no wrong - they've thought of everything and if they didn't do something it's because it's the "wrong" thing to do. Or it's a viciously unfounded rumor, but it certainly can't be a flaw that should be attributed to Apple.
funny story for me
I was at work but my sister was home. So she went to verizon to go get one. I went there recently and a girl that worked there said she would hold one for me on the release date. Of course she didn't....so my sister went there and they were sold out and were going to put one on order for overnight shipping. Then the guy that works there started flirting with my sister, even though she told him she has a boyfriend, and he told her they were getting a drop shipment in 2 hours. So she gave him her number and he called her 2 hours later and she got my phone. Moral of the story: if you have a good looking sister, get her to buy hot new gadgets for you.
@aray48
What are you, Jerry Seinfeld or something?
@Steve Jobs Jr Never insult a GOD again! Mr. Seinfeld is comedy, not some tasteless, sexist story.
@aray48 Win.
@aray48 pics or it didn't happen
@aray48 on the downside, there will be more people hiding in your bushes...
