Bloodhound SuperSonic Car gets a full-scale model ahead of land speed record attempt
If you've been busy wondering what a 1,000mph car might look like, here is your answer. A full-sized model of the Bloodhound SSC has been hammered together and is currently on show at the Farnborough International Air Show. We reckon the reason it's there is because the real deal Bloodhound will be built by aeronatics companies and its supersonic speed will justify describing its movement as "flying." Three of the men responsible for the project, including driver Andy Green, were involved in the current land speed record holder, the Thrust SSC, which acheved 763mph back in 1997. With better aerodynamics allied to a Falcon hybrid rocket and Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine, it's believed that the Bloodhound will go all the way past the magical 1,000 marker, but there's still at least a year before a shakedown run can be enacted. If everything goes well, however, they might be able to squeeze their attempt at the world land speed record in before the 2012 robocalypse. Fingers crossed.

Original mock-up for Ford Probe?
@pple is poo
It has wheels, has an engine and can turn (a bit). I don't think it counts as a motor vehicle but imo its a car much in the same way that if you took the engine out of your car and put up some wind sails...it'd still be a car.
Where the hell is Speed Racer!??
@pple is poo
haha.. that's exactly what I was about to say
No doubt this is awesome, but what exactly is the purpose of setting land speed records? And who sponsors these things? Though these two questions can sort of be answered together.
@midnightblade Who cars, fast things are awesome :P. I really really want to go to farnborough air show, I can hear all the planes flying about from my house :( not open to public yet though.
@BaddudeVsNinja
Same here. It's loud!
@midnightblade
They always claim it's to 'inspire and educate young people'. Really they're just doing it for the challenge.
I can think of better things to do than building a plane that is restricted to the ground though.
@troll*OS. Did you miss a 'P' in yours? Force Zing
@Lord Vader
I don't understand what you did there. =[
trollPOS lol
Looks like it is from Science Ninja Team Gatchaman...
I'm so buying one LOL
What I love most about Bloodhound is that it's a project that's supposed to get girls into engineering. So, to get girls interested, you take a car, make it go stupidly fast, and then call it Bloodhound. That's a flawless plan there!
Also, Bloodhound has a 12L petrol engine (or something as utterly ludicrous) as a fuel pump for the jet engine!
@l3v5y
So you reckon calling it Barbie and painting it pink would do a better job at attracting girls to manly sciences and engineering?
@Bahumbug I think there's no trying to make people go in to engineering. If they're interested in it, they'll do it, if they're not, they won't. I like Bloodhound, I just think the idea for it is a stupid one.
For the record, I'm doing an engineering course next year at uni.

Google "Define: car" - a motor vehicle with four wheels.
This is jet powered so doesn't have a motor, so technically it isn't a car. At least us Brits are doing something better than America!!!
Go ahead, get behind the wheel, you'll be fine.
@bitingback
A "Motor" is just a device that Creates motion. "Rocket Motor" is a pretty common term.
I'm pretty sure its not a car, it's a broken plane.
This is a plane that can't fly lol.
The North American Eagle team already has a vehicle using a modified F104 fuselage and engine undergoing tests to break the current LSR.
@arkweld Their vehicle is a jet they're trying to keep on the ground, which has required lots of modifications (since they're normally designed to fly!) whereas Bloodhound is built from scratch. Only time will tell which works better, but I suspect it'll be Bloodhound.
@l3v5y
Right now Bloodhound isn't built from anything.
Not worth paying attention to something which isn't close to existing yet and is at least two years away from a LSR attempt.
WoW ! So maybe someday a "car" is going to roll at 1,609.344kilometers per hours.
That's some magical marker !
/s
Just drop you monkey units ffs...
True
is it faster than my evo?
I have a signed print on the Thrust SSC, signed by Andy Green and Richard Noble :)
Glad to see they are working on something even better!
car my ass
@xdeiri
No, I dont caress your ass!
@Bahumbug
i am a gril, do you still dont want to caress my ass?
@xdeiri
Wow, did you work on the translation team for Zero Wing?
@A25i
i worked on "how to be a troll" game.by all picky Americans.
They're researching part of this at my Uni :-) I'll hopefully be attending the test run/unveiling in the UK before the attempt, can't wait! XD
+1 to Engadget for shortening robot apocalypse to robocalypse.
Sorry engadget but I saw this model in October last year at Goodwood.
Great project though, cant wait for it to launch :)
@bitingback Chrysler might disagree with you...

Still waiting on that Warp Core prototype launch
@bitingback
Umm, it has two powers sources, a jet engine and a v12 MOTOR.
@pple is poo
Agreed. And besides, if you're going that fast, God intelligently designed wings for a reason.
The land speed record is an interesting exercise in flying while touching the ground.
