Netflix coming to Canada this fall
Netflix has just announced it'll be taking its first tentative step abroad with a rollout of its video streaming service in Canada. Specifics are predictably light at the present moment, but interested Canucks can sign up now to be informed as soon as those details drop. So Canada in the fall... and the UK in winter, perhaps? We can only hope.

They just need the movies out on time like blockbuster
@PhoneTech Now they can watch Canadian-only television.
Is "Strange Brew" available from Netflix ('cause, you know, that's Canada's favorite movie)?
@Smart People Play Tuba And top two that undermine Canadian society image along with South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut.
@PhoneTech I wouldn't waste my time on streaming for another ten years or maybe longer. It is all hype. Streaming has been around for 10 years and it sucks. Google "streaming sucks" to see why.
While your DVD or Blu Ray is playing nicely in HD others will be frustrated at streaming movies stopping to buffer at times in lower quality.
wow I got the tip in before anyone else? I stay on twitter too much....lol
you forgot the 'eh' at the end
@aaroninde
I was going to joke about the same thing. :)
@aaroninde
I find the lack of Mounties in that ad disturbing.
@gw812
I find the lack of any humour in your post disturbing as well, though to be expected.
A little late no? I've already resorted to other things and don't intend to change my ways!
DON'T JUDGE ME BRO!
Great news. I hope it's not overpriced.....
@TareG
Are you kidding? in Canada EVERYTHING is overpriced and watered down.
I guarantee at launch the die hards will complain while the general public goes 'meh.
@harjon456
Unfortunately that is true.
@harjon456
Not the beer. Overpriced, you bet your ass (and the Libs will lose the next provincial election for jacking up the price of beer to compensate fop the one place the HST would have actually led to a lower price), but at least it's alcohol in it unlike American Beer
@KC
Screw alcohol. Give me reasonably priced everyday groceries, and movie tickets.
Lovefilm in the UK has its own streaming service, but is fairly new, quality is still fixed at a rather low resolution and is only available through a pc browser.
All I can say is..it's about time.
When will services become worldwide?? Like netflix, hulu and all this other us only streaming sites.! What about Australia, we hav the worst services like iTunes store and bigpond to rent and there's no hd.! Even though our best Internet plans is expensive we deserve the same online treatment as anyone else!.!.
@Nickmate Blame your local government's rules and regulations in regards to that content. ESPECIALLY if you live in Australia.
Great service! Canadians you will be enjoying it.
You lucky bastards.
This is excellent news, my family and I are using 'rabbit ear's' for our 42" Plasma by Hitachi. We have yet to sign-up/pay for cable/satellite for the 6 1/2 years we've been married and we will be all over this as my wife will be giving birth to our 2nd child in November.
We see Canada every day.
A lot of TV/movies are made in Toronto,
Hope RIM kicks Apple`s a**...some more !
@bufbarnaby
Actually more movies are filmed in Vancouver - hence the Hollywood North slogan.
@TheGnomesAreWatching bout 50/50. Torontohas that Hollywood North thing going for it, too. ;)
@Darkroom Bell and Rogers don't care because if you have them as an ISP you're gonna hit high overage charges because of their rediculous caps
Can I get a loud HALLELUJAH....AMEN.. its about mudafukintime.
Okay, Canada? You happy now, Canada? Can you shut the fuck up now, Canada?
Nah, just messin', glad that you'll all soon be aboard what we Americans have been enjoying for like, 3 years now.
@ModernTenshi04 thing is if they get access to everything we do via streaming, they got it better than we did, as the first year or so we just had B movies and documentaries mostly...
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
You say that like it's a bad thing or that it really matters. There was plenty of decent streaming goodness when Netflix started out.
I hate how people are all, "There's nothing to watch via streaming, it doesn't have everything I want." It's total BS. They have 17k items streaming, so if you can't find anything to watch, you just suck at using Netflix.
Same thing with people who say they've run out of things to watch with the regular disc service: total BS, and you also fail at using Netflix properly.
Yeah, I cant wait to use my 90gb download cap on movies now. Wonder if Rogers or Bell are going to throttle this now cause it uses too much bandwith
@Spikie69 Than maybe a uprising will take place. I mean they throttle P2P, and thats kinda hard to argue because you and I and everyone else's grandma knows that we are not using it for "Ubuntu start-up disks". But Netflix is a legit, legal media consumption service that deserve full bandwidth by the ISP. So if they try to throttle, I'm sure people will bitch. And bitch hard.
@Spikie69 Meh just sign up with Teksavvy Cable if it's available in your area, 200GB cap should handle this, or they offer Unlimited for a little more.
@NeoXY ... it is non of my ISP's damn business what I am downloading.
Streaming Netflix has transformed my life. Cancelled satellite, hardly ever send a physical disk in any more, as much Reno 911 as I want, and a lot of variety. Every once in a while there's even a fairly recent really good movie, but even so there are enough classics to keep anybody happy. I think.
The overall list of available films isn't so large (probably a few hundred per day?) but I can't figure out the logic of the list is populated, because not only do the available films change on a daily basis (and the changes are not all on the New Films menu, either) but the categories change also. A bit random, but a great service.
I hope this is available through xbox live!
*falls off chair*
I...can't...breathe...
Used Netflix in NYC and it was fine. But back in Toronto there are lots of alternatives already here, don't need Netflix at all anymore.
@mesonto such as what services in Toronto? I haven't fully looked into it here.
@mesonto Umm, there are no legal streaming video services in Canada, that I've been able to find. What are you talking about?
America's funny hat has eyes?
Finally. Anything that further reduces my reliance on conventional TV makes me happy.
I agree with @floobie - it's about time to see a decent multi-platform digital content play hit Canada. I don't care for an iAnything in my system - if Netflix gives me choice of device and ultimately access to a wide variety of content easily then it is a pure win. Our local attempts are hacks at best - I'm looking at you HMV, Puretracks, and cable co's VOD services.
Dear Canada...please send more French-Canadian girls ; )
@bufbarnaby
Sure you can have all the chain smokers and Celine Dion clones... or is that not what you meant?
Who cares where's the iPhone app already?!?
@BrounsBro
I know, right?! I've been waiting. They said this summer, but maybe they don't realize that summer is almost over already.
This is great news! It's one of the apps i wish i had on my iPad. It's a great service i used in SF, but Canada just hasn't had a quality comparative solution, from what i've tried.
Hulu? Are you listening?
So, are they going to be adding bandwidth to support the added customer base? Netflix has been pokey the past few months...
