Nokia looking for new CEO to replace Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, says WSJ
It doesn't come as a complete surprise, but the Wall Street Journal is reporting (care of "people familiar with the matter") that the search is on for a new Nokia CEO to replace Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo. Investor confidence and falling stock prices are to blame as the company has had -- and we're being nice here -- great difficulty competing in the smartphone market against the likes of Apple and Google. Espoo isn't commenting on the matter (yet), but we'll keep you up to date. Better start updating that resume now, dear reader.

Hahahah!!! Loser Company with a Loser CEO
@assb10yr
A real loser would be someone like you who bought a "phone" that can barely make phone calls.
Maybe Balmer can join them and hasten their shutdown
I love Nokia phones but why can't they sell to Verizon and AT&T? Are they too proud to give in to the customer?
@phonite
Two major reasons, Verizon uses CDMA and AT&T gimp and maul any phones used on their network to the point where you'd be better off getting something else.
I buy unlocked and I'm on AT&T.
Typically Americentric and cliche Nokia-related comments on Engadget are typically Americentric and cliche!
Worst. Use. Of. Meme. Ever.
And that's the second worst right there. Twofer!
HOLY SHIT
but who is gonna be
and what will happen to the future of nokia ?
DUM DUM DUMMMMMMMMM
dayum skippy! bout time someone got that dinosaur outta here.
at least handsets under him held their reception well.
but seriously, get outta the kitchen, OPK!
"Let me introduce you our newest phone, with the revolutionary new antenna design, the Nokia NX! No more dropped calls. No more dropped bars."
*applause
Here's to hoping that whoever fills his shoes will do the company's history justice, and actually get a unified Symbian OS out there that can compete with iOS, Android, Blackberry OS, and WebOS. Either that, or Symbian will default to their low end devices and proper support for MeeGo can be what pushes them into a competitive state, because hemorrhaging marketshare is *not* competitive.
Thank god he is getting kicked out. He made Nokia get stuck with old hardware and software, volatile future plans and what not!
Nokia did commit countless crimes like N97, 6800 etc,
their phones are most hated phones in Japan, North america, china and everywhere.
Even Nokia's employees are using Android phones secretly .
FACT : NOK STOCK IS TRADING in single DIGIT, their MARKET CAP HAS REDUCED TO 30 BILLION FROM WELL ABOVE 100 BILLION.
DUE THICK, HIDEOUS AND NON USABLE DIRTY PHONES WITH DIRTY SYMBIAN PERIOD.
@TalentSupporter
You mother must be very proud of you.
@TalentSupporter
Have you gotten that wound checked? Those delusions kind of remind me of rabies.
always wondered.. is it pronounced nawkia? or is it knowkia?
@junyc85
Neither I'm told. It's a nasal "Kno" -- like "know" without the W and you cut the "O" sound in the middle of saying it (the phonetic is foreign to the English language.... it's like saying "no" with a heavy Asian accent), followed by a "key" without any forceful air on the "k" (again, not used in any American English words), and ya as in Yahoo.
Someone from Finland correct me if I got it wrong.
@junyc85 naw keee ahhh.
I think Nokia is gonna get way better with N8. Moreover, one must always remember that Nokia does not make only one fone, from the low-end user to the high-end, they have everything for everyone.
I think I might have some chance to be the C.E.O, lol
"Espoo isn't commenting on the matter "
This sentence doesn't make any sense. "Espoo" is the name of a city here in Finland and not a name of a person.
They won't send him with a big pay cheque, Finnish culture doesn't really coutnenance pay on the scale of the UK or US. They're way too socialist for that. For the size of company OPK's pay is pretty pathetic (rightly so considering the job he's done with it.
The writing has been on the wall for him for a while, they've tried cycling round a few of the execs to different positions to get the experience required but there are no real internal candidates, Anssi is needed too much to be wasted at Exec level.
The company needs an external, and they'll probably need to be American and for the love of god please not an accountant or lawyer. Lord knows who the possible candidates are though.
They'll get a good inheritence though, Nokia's H1 portfolio for next year is actually pretty strong and the development lifecycles will be shortening a lot.
Just need someone consumer centric enough to commit to 2 years of SW upgrades for a device and who can actually inspire the talant that Nokia has.
Who Care Apple is going to dominate Nokia no matter what ceo they have.
Read most of the comments here.. I agree with some of the strategic thinking here, and wanted to add:
1. In order to reverse the HW vs SW ratio Nokia needs developers.
2. Make meego the best thing you can.
3. target non-american markets to start with. if there is something that pisses americans is a great device out of their reach.
4. don't go the android route, don't apple's route, do your own thing
5. I agree, 3 models - low , mid and high with wifi connectivity and voip on all.
6. Make strong connections with european, asian, african and australian providers. let them speak to their target audiences.
7. developers. here is the thing, everybody today works on the apple framework. just downloaded the windows mobile 7 beta to descover it works on fucking C#. C# ?! . don't make your developers suffer. give them good simulators, good dev env, pamper them with great libraries and videos that show how to do stuff. INVEST in your developers. if you want to kill apple, make a better environment for curated market, give the developers clear guidelines and stick by them, give the developers a way to influence your decisions and discuss it amongst themselves.
8. this is big, this is important: get objective-c on meego. get cocoa touch on meego. if you can do that , all of the iphone applications will be able to be compiled and run on your phones!
9. Protect your developers. if a phone is hackable and software can be copied from it without charge, developers will leave.
10. concentrate your efforts on making the best phones you can. you have the technology, now put it to use.
so to summarize:
Adopt the best tech out there, Invest in creating a haven for developers, create the best HW, get it out quickly using a streamlined production, get americans interested, sell in america.
@shul
Maybe apple should allow Qt?
Wow. Just wow...
Isn't anyone else just SICK of the brick slab of a phone form factor? Seriously?
I have an HTC Hero (GSM) and I own an iPod 3G w/ iOS4. The lag on the Hero is just too much for me right now. I don't really care for having a touchscreen phone anymore and am going to order an 'old as dirt' E72 and two box it with my iPod.
Maybe I'm just too old fashioned, but I'm just getting really tired of everyone telling me that I can only get an iPhone or a Droid phone and that anything else I might want is 'old' or 'stupid'...
Hey, I was at that dinner that he's speaking at in the picture. Cool beans.
