especially since they all look pretty much the same and run the exact same looking hardware. They should stick with one device name carrying Droid and just different specs. Simplicity wins, not saturating consumers with items that are hard to differentiate.
@arkweld Not very confusing for people who can read. HTC Droid Eris - Low end mainstream smartphonedevice, discontinued. Small screen. Motorola Droid - High end (at launch) smartphone with a hardware keyboard, mid range screen. HTC Droid Incredible - High end smartphone without keyboard, mid range screen. Motorola Droid X - High end smartphone without keyboard, very large screen. Motorola Droid 2 - High end replacement for the original Droid. Mid range screen, keyboard.
iPhone = 1 phone every year Androids = 4-5 phones this already People that have the incredible feel like turd because it's only been a few months and the droid x came out. The only good thing about this Is that people have the option of qwerty or touch screen. No thanks, I'll stick to my iPhone 4 w/ a case ;)
@iZach So it's better to have a slowly progressing ecosystem that can't keep up with technological advances? Never mind that the DI is still one of the most high end phones around, with its 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM and 8MP camera.... all this does is increases competition, increases choice, and gives more freedom to the consumer, though I can understand why Apple wouldn't want that.
And your point is what exactly, that having choice is a bad thing? FYI none of those devices really blow the Incredible away, infact they are marginally better due to slight bumps in hardware specs.
@iZach No, they don't. Because as I just stated, (which you ignored) they're targeting different users. How is it better to have no OPTION at all to upgrade? That's right, the option. You are not required to buy every single phone that is released.
Ask any Incredible owner, you'll be hard pressed to find any that think it's outdated. It's a fantastic phone despite the Droid X. Some people like the large screen, others like the DInc's small form factor.
@iZach I'll use your precious Apple products as an example. Apple releases new Macbooks once a year or so and new iMacs, Mac Pros, and Mac Minis even less often. Windows PC manufacturers like HP, Asus, Dell, and Acer release new desktop and laptop computers every month or two. Which platform sells more computers? Which one gets the newest CPUs, GPUs, disk drives, peripherals, etc. first? Do people complain about how fast their new PC becomes obsolete? Of course they do. But that's the nature of the industry and people have accepted it. Nobody is forced to buy every new upgrade as it becomes available, but they like knowing that they can.
Smartphones are not much different. There will always be new phones coming out every month or two, especially with Android on them. The major difference between Android phones and iPhone is choice. Having a choice is not a bad thing. There may not be many differences in terms of specs between the iPhone 4 and top tier Android phones today, but there sure will be within 6 months.
Nobody is forced to keep up with the pace at which new Android phones are launched, so it's really not a big deal. If you don't like having the freedom to choose the hardware that suits your needs best, stick with the iPhone. That's your choice. The rest of us, however, will gladly let you borrow our phones if you ever need to make a call.
@Zeroexe43 Well if the Droid and the Droid 2 are "almost similar" then the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 are definitely similar too. Same form factor, same size, 99% of the features in common. I mean come ON ! It's not like it's a revolution... It's pretty good phone (huh wait.. no actually it's a pretty bad phone) So as I was saying it's a pretty good device, but really If I had to pick one world NOT to define the iPhone 4 I'd pick revolutionary.
@CapnShiner agreed, im an avid apple user. but technology is technology. it evolves so fast that you think you have the latest and it becomes the past just as fast.
choice is phenomenal, and whats better is it makes products cheaper. 2 years ago a TB hard drive would cost an easy 500. not you can get a 3TB for less then 2?
i understand it sucks with phones because everyone wants the latest and greates and new models come out all the time so its hard to have that. but hey you can buy a phone at full price, not be locked to a contract and sell your device when a new one comes out.
if technology didnt advance as fast as it does it would be expensive as shit. thats a part of why Apple products are so expensive, other then the quality is high (and yes the quality is there if you own an apple product) they limit how fast they come out.
its sort of like diamonds. there are shit loads out there but they control the supply which in turn makes the price higher.
@Flix C better camera, thinnest smart phone, new design, front facing camera, led flash, better processor, more ram, best screen, noise cancellation... yeah thats 99% like the 3GS... fan boy btw for your information, i have a htc magic not iphone, im just not biased enough to be against the iphone for no reason
They should be releasing one phone under the Droid name. So when you ask for a Droid you get a Droid and when you tell people what phone you have they know exactly what you are referring to. That's how you build brand recognition.
Offering choice is an irrelevant excuse. They all run the same software. If Moto want to release phones like the Incredible, Eris and the X then they don't need the Droid prefix. They can just sell them with under their individual names.
Moto don't even have the technological handover point as an excuse like Apple do. Moto are continuously announcing overlapping product releases and sub-brands under the same product name.
They are diluting their brand before it's even had a chance to enter the consumer mindset.
"What other phones don't. Droid does." "Which Droid? The Incredible? The Eris? or the Droid X?" "Well it must be the Incredible he is talking about because that has the most impressive sounding name."
"I'm looking to grab a new phone using a prepaid service. What's the best prepaid phone service in terms of overall price, phone selection and other bells / whistles. Thanks!"

I'm already confused by all the devices with the Droid© moniker.
1, 2, X, Incredible, D2, R2, Fucking Incredible, Droid Droid ...

iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4...
@einhanderkiller i admit the 3g and 3gs are the same but how can you compare the iphone 4 to the 3gs?

Is that really so hard?

Am I the only one who thinks it would be epic if phone called "Fucking Incredible" comes out?

@iZach Your brain must explode with choice when you walk into a cinema.
