Apple to charge upgrade fee for iPads moving to iOS 4? (update: unlikely)
As if waiting around until fall to get iOS 4 weren't enough of a downer for iPad owners, the latest rumor we're hearing is that they'll have to pay a fee in order to do so. That's right, for the privilege of waiting patiently to get some semblance of multitasking on your slate device, you'll have to pony up the cash -- or so the story goes. Stuff has it on strong authority from app developers in the know that Apple will be asking for a (relatively small) tithe from those wishing to update their iPads when the leaves start turning amber. We'd advise keeping the pitchforks stowed for now -- at least until there's some solid corroboration for this -- but then it's not like Apple hasn't done this before.Update: Apple's iPad licensing docs have been known to carry a provision that the "next major iPad OS software release" will be free, although iOS 4 and the word "free" do not happen to coincide in the same sentence -- overall though, that renders this rumor rather less likely to materialize.

@thesurg3on And what if it's Engadget that's jerking you around?
@SpacePenguinBot I don't mind Darren getting hit with an iPad. PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!
I'm sure the fact that this is earnings day has nothing to do with this little "rumor." I guess Apple is lucky developers didn't claim it was going to kidnap the first-born child of every iPad owner since I checked their EULA and nowhere does it specifically state Apple will not take the first-born child of every iPad owner.
Thanks for the reminder that bloggers aren't quite journalists yet.
When they released iOS 4, they made a big deal about changing the accounting practices that forced them to charge iPod Touch users for upgrades previously.
Not a snowball's chance in hell. I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple charge iPad owners for an upgrade to iOS 5 but they'd be mad to change for an upgrade to the device's OS after only a couple of months. I detect a degree of shit-stirring here.
so... you dont give us a camera, you dont give us ios 4 in summer, you dont give us more ram, you dont give us a screen like iphone 4... honestly the fact that you have any customers for the ipad is amazing at how screwed we got, and now you want us to pay for ios4? every iphone gets for free? yeah alright apple try it
It's time to admit it, I'm Apple Sheeple. I hate their products and their arrogance, yet I keep buying it. I feel like I'm locked in because of my music collection - I don't like Zune. But really, I wouldn't be surprised, they charged for all past updates, iOS is the first time they DIDN't charge iPod Touch users.
I also find Media reporting on the iPad WiFi issues pretty lacking. There was a flurry of stories for about a day and then Apple came out with those ridiculous suggestions and blamed it on the WiFi routers so people went out and purchased Apple Routers - so the story was never followed up on. I was stuck with a Janky ass iPad for two months that wouldn't stay connected to my home network.
Low and behold, Apple quietly issues the fix last week and there's no coverage????? I will say now that my WiFi is fixed, I'm starting to like my iPad more and more. But really how did they get away with releasing an Internet Tablet that didn't connect to the Internet and only got one or two days worth of negative PR about it?????
@malexandria1
No doubt your problem with the iPad getting on the network was that bug in the networking software that caused the iPad to hold onto its IP addresss for too long. Apple had a fix for that a long time ago. And you could avoid the problem by turning off WIFI when not actually using it.
And the fact that Apple FIXED it with a Software update proves it was THEIR issue and not the fault of Verizon Modems or anything else.
Well if it is true, Apple is a greedy bunch of bastards.
@darkroom. Yup, ipod touch 3rd generation has multitasking.
Sent from my iPod
They would be seriously messed to do this. They even offered it free to iPod Touch users. Don't shaft people who bought the most expensive device lmao
Oh, this is just based on the fact that Apple had to charge for the update for iPod Touch devices for several years because of their accounting practices. Those practices are gone, and so OS updates like this are also going to be free. Period. Zero chance of it being true.
Piss takers (if it's true)
THREE WORDS:
Spirit Jailbreak and Backgrounder
@bit1 Thats 4 words.. Counting mustn't be your strong point
@Gicalgary Guess what smart ass, AND is not considered part of the three words and is simply there as a conjunction. Do you know what that is? Here you go:

Maybe you should think twice and do some research before opening your mouth in ignorance and cause yourself to appear idiotic
I'm convinced that the iPad ios4 will be different(read better) than the iphone ios4
thats why jailbreaks are available
This is just to make of the loss on the cases giveaway on iPhone 4....clever!
This is unlikely considering it was free to upgrade everything else. iOS 4 may seem like a big deal upgrade but its really not. The biggest thing is the multi-tasking which I personally rarely use. Pretty minor upgrades to pay for imo..
Kindle and notebooks still outselling this many miles.
I'm pretty sure if this happens I'll be angry enough to sell my iPad. I camped out overnight for this thing and I knew damn well I was getting multitasking eventually. I've been patient for months -- paying is just going to set me over the top, imo.
Hey, they have to pay for all those iCondoms for the iPhone4 somehow!
In this case Microsoft is better that Apple. I get free updates all the time to upgrade my windows, get new service packs to fix the bugs. But I dont why apple loves its fans so much that we have to pay for everything. Source: http://applereviewcentre.com/
