Droid 2 for Verizon will be launching on August 12 -- although it seems to be something of a soft launch, because marketing efforts aren't scheduled to kick in until a week and a half later on the 23rd. What's even more interesting, though, is that there'll be a Star Wars edition of the phone launching
with a white R2-D2 on the back. For the record, this isn't the first time Verizon has toyed with the Droid line's Star Wars origins; Motorola actually had to license the name from Lucasfilm, and to promote the original phone, Big Red sent around remote-control Artoos last year to various media outlets. What we don't know is whether the special edition will be launching at the same time as the stock version -- so if the plain-vanilla Droid 2 comes out first, that might automatically make the decision of which to buy for some folks. What about you?

@Aegee14 Hey, Verizon! You don't have to hurry to get just another Droid. Many users are longing for your version of Galaxy S.
One, it's "Lucasfilm," not "Lucasfilms." Two, if this thing is launched 11 days before it's ad campaign, it certainly will be a "soft" opening, which is saying something when you consider Android's relatively weak performance in individual device sales.

Fragmented confusion. So the Droid X is gonna be an earlier model than Driod 2? I thought X was the roman numeral for 10. Leave it to Motorola/Google and others to fragment the Android market with confusing naming schemes. At least Apple is consistent with their OS and iPhone names.

Verizon's lack of frankness is really bothering me. They're changing everything next week, they're releasing a phone next month, but it's all top secret. Everyone knows about it, but they won't speak up.
Why can't they tell me when the phone is coming out and when the data plans are changing instead of Engadget?

Verizon stole my idea! I work for T-Mo, and when the MTS launched, I said we should have Star Wars editions. Black for Vader, white for Stormtroopers, and red for Imperial Guard. We could have had posters that said, "These ARE the droids you're looking for." I am paid too little...

September 30th is the release date & to buy the R2-D2 you have to buy it from LucasFilms.com , it's their product & Verizon will be the carrier. You cannot buy the R2-D2 from Verizon. If you can find it @ lucasfilms.com you will be able to pre-order it. Good Luck Star Wars Fans.
